  • Sand compaction pile (SCP) method is composed of compacted sand pile inserted into the soft clay deposit by displacement method. SCP-reinforced ground is composite soil which consists of the SCP and the surrounding soft soil. When a surcharge load is applied on composite ground, time-dependent behavior occurs in the soft soil due to consolidation according to radial flow toward SCP and stress transfer also takes place between the SCP and the soft soil. This paper presents the numerical results of cylindrical composite ground that was conducted to investigate consolidation characteristics and the stress transfer mechanism of SCP-reinforced composite ground. The results show that the consolidation of soft clay has a significant effect on the stress transfer mechanism and stress concentration ratio of composite ground

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP)-improved ground is composite soil which consists of the SCP and the surrounding soft soil. When a surcharge load is applied to composite ground, time-dependent behaviors occur in the composite soil due to consolidation according to radial flow toward the SCP. In addition, stress transfer also takes place between the SCP and the soft soil. This paper presents the numerical results of cylindrical composite ground that was conducted to investigate smear effect on consolidation behaviors of SCP-improved ground. The results showed that the smeared zone of soft clay had a significant effect on effective stress-pore water pressure response, stress transfer mechanism and stress concentration ratio of composite ground. Amount of stress transfer between the clay and the SCP was maximum in depth of z/H=0.25, and decreased with depth. Stress concentration ratio of composite ground was not constant, but depended on consolidation process. It was also found that the value of stress concentration ratio in soft clay with smeared zone was larger than that in soft clay without smeared zone.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay wall, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has widely been applied. Improved ground is composite ground which is consisted of the sand pile-surrounding clayey soil. As caisson and upper structures are installed on SCP composite ground, the settlement is compositively occurred by elastic compression of sand compaction piles and also consolidation of the surrounding clay ground. In this study, the combined settlement model is proposed to predict the settlement of SCP composite ground in basis of elastic theory for sand compaction pile and consolidation theory for marine soft clay. Optimization technique was performed based on back-analysis so that real coded genetic algorithm was applied to estimate the parameters of the proposed settlement model. Case analysis was carried out for a domestic SCP composite ground to examine the applicability of the proposed prediction technique.

  • SCP is a construction method that maximizes the effects of ground improvement by creating sand piles, which are formed by the compaction within soft ground. SCP is mainly used for consolidation and drain effects in clayey soils, and as a liquefaction countermeasure through effects such as compaction in loose sandy soils. In the design of SCP, if the sand piles with high stiffness are not taken into account, it can become a design that overly considered safety, and increased construction costs are highly likely to cause economic disadvantages. The changes in stress conditions and compaction mechanisms in the subsurface have been identified to a certain extent by study findings to date. However, the studies that considered SCP and in-situ ground as composite ground are fairly limited, and therefore, those studies have not achieved enough results to fully explain the relevant topics. In this study, the ground improved by SCP was regarded as the composite ground that consists of SCP and in-situ ground. Moreover, employing a CID test, this study examined the changes in the stress conditions of in-situ ground according to the installation of SCP through the relations between $K_0$ and SCP replacement ratio. At the same, whether the SCP installation procedure can be recreated in a laboratory was examined using a cyclic triaxial test. According to the test results, the changes in the stress conditions of the original ground occurred most largely in an initial stage of SCP installation, and after a certain time point, the vibration for SCP installation did not have a great influence on the changes in the stress conditions of the ground. Moreover, in order to recreate the behaviors of in-suit ground according to SCP in a laboratory, cyclic loading, which corresponds to casing vibration, was concluded to be essentially required.

  • Sand Compaction Pile method is one of the widely used ground improvement techniques at loose sand or soft clay ground in Asian countries. However, due to environmental and economical problems concerning shortage of sand resources alternative materials are needed to substitute sand for SCP. This study is on the applicability of slag as an alternative material SCP. Consolidation and direct shear test are performed for the slag-clay composite specimens to find out the positive effects of consolidation rate and shear resistance of slag reinforced ground. The result shows that slag has similar effects with sand in consolidation and shear resistance behavior in composite ground, which says slag can be used as alternative material of sand for SCP.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has usually been applied. SCP-reinforced ground is composite soil which consists of the sand pile and the surrounding soft soil. One of main important considerations in design and analysis for SCP-reinforced soils is stress concentration ratio according to area replacement ratio. In this paper, the numerical analysis was conducted to investigate characteristics of stress concentration ratio in composite ground. It was found that stress concentration ratio of composite ground is not constant as well as depends on several factors such as area replacement ratio, depth of soft soil, and consolidation process. The values of stress concentration ratio increase during loading stage due to stress transfer of composite soil, and reach up to 2.5∼12 according to area replacement ratio at the end of construction. After the end of consolidation, however, these values are converged to 2.5 to 6.0 irrespective of area replacement ratio due to increase in effective stress of soft soil during consolidation process.

  • In this study, a series of laboratory tests based on 'Unit-cell concept' are performed to investigate improvement characteristics of clay ground in sand compaction pile method. Settlement reduction characteristics of composite ground and improvement characteristics of clay part could be qualified. In these procedure, the new strain-compression index($C_{\epsilon}$) of composite ground are adopted to show compressibility of composite ground according to the area replacement ratio, which is similar to the compression index($C_c$) in pure clay ground. Also, using normalization of reduction of water content in composite ground to the initial water content, improvement characteristics of clay part are investigated.

  • The sand compaction pile (SCP) method, which forms a composite ground by driving sand piles into clay deposit, is the most commonly used soil improvement techniques in many countries for more than 30 years. Installation of sand compaction piles reduces the amount of consolidation settlement and increases the bearing capacity of soft clay deposit. In this paper, field survey conducted to investigated the consolidation behavior of the composite ground improved by SCPs. It is suggested that the measured consolidation velocity is later than design theory, however measured consolidation settlement is higher than design theory.

  • Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) is a soil improvement method that a sand charge is introduced into the pipe, and the pipe is withdrawn part away while the sand pile is compacted and its diameter is enlarged. The sand used in this method should be of good quality. In Korea, crushed stone and washed sea sand are used frequently in SCP. However, use of these materials is restricted because of environmental problem and deficiency of supply. In the copper smelting process, about 0.7 million tons of copper slag are produced in Korea. The range of particle size distribution of copper slag is from 0.15mm to 5mm, so it can be a substitute for sand, and the relatively high specific gravity compared with the sand, is its characteristic. Copper slag is hyaline and so stable environmentally that in foreign country, such as Japan, Germany etc., it is widely used in harbor, revetment and offshore structure construction works. Therefore, in this study, the several laboratory tests were peformed to evaluate the applicability of copper slag as a substitute for sand of SCP. From the mechanical property test, the characteristics of sand and copper slag were compared and analyzed, and from laboratory model test, the strength of composite ground was compared and analyzed by monitoring the stress and ground settlement of clay, SCP and copper slag compaction pile. Specially, this study focused on the application of copper slag as sand substitute in SCP pilot tests based on laboratory tests results.
