  • In this study, the structural, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Pb[(Sb$\sub$1/2/Nb$\sub$1/2/)$\sub$x/- (Ni$\sub$1/3/Nb$\sub$2/3/)$\sub$0.15-x/- (Zr,Ti)$\sub$0.85/]O$_3$(x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05) ceramics is investigated as a function of Pb(Sb$\sub$1/2/Nb$\sub$1/2/)O$_3$ (abbreviated PSN) substitution. With the increase of PSN substitution, the crystal structure is transO$_3$formed from the tetragonal phase to the rhombohedral phase and the grain size is decreased abruptly. The curie temperature is decreased with the PSN substitution. The dielectric constant is increased with the PSN substitution and maximum value of 2290 is obtained at 4mol% PSN. With the PSN substitution, the coercive field is increased and the remnant polarization is decreased. The Electromechanical coupling factor(k$\sub$p/) Is showed the highest value of 0.622 at lmol% PSN and the mechanical quality factor(Q$\sub$m/) is decreased abruptly with the PSN substitution.

  • In this study, $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.97}Sb_{0.03})O_3+0.9$ mol% $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}+x$ mol% $K_4CuNb_8O_{23}$ (x = 0, 0.2, 0.6, 0.8) ceramics were prepared by a conventional mixed oxide method. Their microstructure and electric properties were investigated. The secondary phase was made by virtue of $K_4CuNb_8O_{23}$ (KCN) addition in the $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.97}Sb_{0.03})O_3$ system ceramics. However, the sinterability of the ceramics increased with increasing $K_4CuNb_8O_{23}$ content. At the 0.6 mol% $K_4CuNb_8O_{23}$ added composition ceramics sintered at $1,060^{\circ}C$, kp and $d_{33}$ showed the optimum values of 0.39 and 145 pC/N, respectively, suitable for piezoelectric actuator application.

  • P-type $Bi_{0.5}$$Sb_{1.5}$ $Te_3$ thin films were deposited by the flash evaporation technique, and their thermoelectric properties and electronic transport parameters were investigated. The effective mean free path model was adopted to examine the thickness effect on the thermoelectric properties. Annealing effects on the carrier concentration and mobility were also studied, and their variations were analyzed in conjunction with the antisite defects. Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity versus inverse thickness showed a linear relationship, and the effective mean free path was found to be 3150$\AA$. No phase transformation and composition change were observed after annealing treatment, but carrier mobility increased due to grain growth. Carrier concentration decreased considerably due to reduction of the antisite defects, so that electrical conductivity decreased and Seebeck coefficient increased. When annealed at 473 K for 1 hr, Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity were $160\mu$V/K and 610 $W^{-1}$ $cm^{ -1}$, respectively. Therefore, the thermoelectric quality factor were also enhanced to be $16\mu$W/cm $K^2$.>.

  • It is highlighted that increasing the adsorbent surface area on volumetric basis is very important in providing an easy access for gas molecules. Fine particles around $3{\mu}m$ of soft-burned dolomite kiln dust (SB-DKD) were hydrated to wet slurry samples by ball mill process and then placed in a chamber to use spray dryer method. Spherical granules with particle size distribution of $50{\sim}60{\mu}m$ were prepared under the experimental condition with or without addition of a pore-forming agent. The relationship between bead size of the pore-forming agent and size of SB-DKD particles is the most significant factor in preparation of spherical granules with a high porosity. Whereas addition of smaller beads than SB-DKD resulted in almost no change in the surface porosity of spherical granules, addition of larger beads than SB-DKD contributed to obtaining of the particles with both 15 times larger average pore volume and 1 order of magnitude larger porosity. It is considered that spherical granules with improved $N_2$ gas adsorption ability may also be utilized for other atmospheric gas adsorption.

  • The induction of interleukin-6 (IL-6) using combined proinflammatory agents $(LPS/IFN-{\gamma}\;or\;TNF-{\alpha}/IFN-{\gamma})$ was studied in relation to p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and $NF-{\kappa}B$ transcriptional factor in primary neonatal cardiomyocytes. When added to cultures of cardiomyocytes, the combined agents $(LPS/IFN-[\gamma}\;or\;TNF-{\alpha}/IFN-{\gamma})$ had stimulatory effect on the production of IL-6 and the elevation was significantly reduced by SB203580, a specific p38 MAPK inhibitor. SB203580 inhibited protein production and gene expression of IL-6 in a concentration-dependent manner. In this study, $IFN-{\gamma}$ enhancement of $TNF-{\alpha}-induced\;NF-{\kappa}B$ binding affinity as well as p38 MAP kinase activation was observed. However, a specific inhibitor of p38 MAPK, SB203580, had no effect on $TNF-{\alpha}/IFN-{\gamma}\;or\;LPS/IFN-{\gamma}-induced\;NF-{\kappa}B$ activation. This study strongly suggests that these pathways about $TNF-{\alpha}/IFN-{\gamma}$ or $LPS/IFN-{\gamma}-activated$ IL-6 release can be primarily dissociated in primary neonatal cardiomyocytes.

  • Boron Nitride (BN) doped GeSbTe films were grown by the ion beam sputtering deposition (IBSD). The in-situ sheet resistance data and the x-ray diffraction patterns showed the crystallization is suppressed due to the BN incorporation. The phase change speed in BN doped GeSbTe films were investigated using the static tester equipped with nanosecond pulsed laser. The phase change speed for BN doped GST films become faster than the corresponding values for an undoped GST film. The Johnson-Mehl-Avrami(JMA) plot and Avrami coefficient for laser crystallization showed that the change in growth mode during the laser crystallization is a most important factor for the phase change speed in the BN doped GST films. The JMA results and the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images indicate that the origin of the change in the crystalline growth mode is due to an increase in the number of initial nucleation sites which is produced by the incorporated BN. In addition, the retension properties for the laser writing/erasing are remarkably improved in BN doped GeSbTe films owing to the stability of the incorporated BN.

  • P-type ternary $Bi_{0.5}Sb_{1.5}Te_3$ alloys are fabricated via mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Different ball sizes are used in the MA process, and their effect on the microstructure; hardness, and thermoelectric properties of the p-type BiSbTe alloys are investigated. The phases of milled powders and bulks are identified using an X-ray diffraction technique. The morphology of milled powders and fracture surface of compacted samples are examined using scanning electron microscopy. The morphology, phase, and grain structures of the samples are not altered by the use of different ball sizes in the MA process. Measurements of the thermoelectric (TE) transport properties including the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor are measured at temperatures of 300-400 K for samples treated by SPS. The TE properties do not depend on the ball size used in the MA process.

  • A thin film thermoelectric generator that consisted of 5 p/n pairs was fabricated with $1{\mu}m$-thick n-type $In_3Sb_1Te_2$ and p-type $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ deposited via radio frequency magnetron sputtering. First, $1{\mu}m$-thick GST and IST thin films were deposited at $250^{\circ}C$ and room temperature, respectively, via radio-frequency sputtering; these films were annealed from 250 to $450^{\circ}C$ via rapid thermal annealing. The optimal power factor was found at an annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. To demonstrate thermoelectric generation, we measured the output voltage and estimated the maximum power of the n-IST/p-GST generator by imposing a temperature difference between the hot and cold junctions. The maximum output voltage and the estimated maximum power of the $1{\mu}m$-thick n-IST/p-GST TE generators are approximately 17.1 mV and 5.1 nW at ${\Delta}T=12K$, respectively.

  • The n-type Bi2-xSbxTe3 compounds have been of great interest due to its potential to achieve a high thermoelectric performance, comparable to that of p-type Bi2-xSbxTe3. However, a comprehensive understanding on the thermoelectric properties remains lacking. Here, we investigate the thermoelectric transport properties and band characteristics of n-type Bi2-xSbxTe3 (x = 0.1 - 1.1) based on experimental and theoretical considerations. We find that the higher power factor at lower Sb content results from the optimized balance between the density of state effective mass and nondegenerate mobility. Additionally, a higher carrier concentration at lower x suppresses bipolar conduction, thereby reducing thermal conductivity at elevated temperatures. Consequently, the highest zT of ~ 0.5 is observed at 450 K for x = 0.1 and, according to the single parabolic band model, it could be further improved by ~70 % through carrier concentration tuning.

  • We conducted a study on excessive doping of the Cr and In elements in Bi-Sb-Te materials satisfying the Hume-Rothery rule, and investigated the resulting electrical and thermal properties. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) results, we confirmed the formation of a single phase even with excessive doping. Through analysis of electrical properties, we observed the highest enhancement in electrical characteristics at y = 0.2, suggesting that the appropriate ratio of Bi-Sb significantly influences this enhancement. Using the Callaway-von Baeyer (CvB) model to assess scattering due to point defects, we calculated the experimental point defect scattering factor (ΓCvB.exp), which was notably high due to the substantial differences in volume and atomic weight between the substituted (Cr, In) and original (Bi, Sb) elements. Additionally, we conducted a single parabolic band (SPB) modeling analysis of materials with compositions y = 0.1 and 0.2, where, despite a decrease in density-of-states effective mass (md*) during the enhancement process from y = 0.1 to 0.2, a sharp increase in non-degenerate mobility (μ0) led to an 88 % increase in weighted mobility (μw). Furthermore, analyzing zT with respect to nH revealed a 51 % increase in zT at a composition of y = 0.2. This study confirmed a significant reduction in lattice thermal conductivity with the co-doping strategy, and with further compositional studies to improve electrical properties, we anticipate achieving high zT.
