  • This paper presents a design of the successive approximation ADC(SA-ADC) applicable to a midium-low speed analog-front end(AFE) for the maximum 15MS/s CCD image processing. SA-ADC is effective in applications ranging widely between low and mid data rates due to the large power scaling effect on the operating frequency variations in some other way of pipelined ADCs. The proposed design exhibits some distinctive features. The "differential capacitor-coupling scheme" segregates the input sampling behavior from the sub-DAC incorporating the differential input and the sub-DAC output, which prominently reduces the loading throughout the signal path. Determining the MSB(sign bit) from the held input data in advance of the data conversion period, a kind of the signed successive approximation, leads to the reduction of the sub-DAC hardware overhead by 1 bit and the conversion period by 1 cycle. Characterizing the proposed design in a 3.3 V $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS process by Spectre simulations verified its validity of the application to CCD analog front-ends.

  • In this paper, we presents the design and implementation results of the FFT processor, which supports 4096 points of operation with less memory by sharing several memory used in the base-4 systolic array FFT processor into one memory. Sharing memory provides the advantage of reducing the area, and also simplifies the flow of data as I/O of the data progresses in one memory. The presented FFT processor was implemented and verified on the FPGA device. The implementation resulted in 51,855 CLB LUTs, 29,712 CLB registers, 8 block RAM tiles and 450 DSPs, and confirmed that the memory area could be reduced by 65% compared to the existing base-4 systolic array structure.

  • Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. COVID-19 become an active epidemic disease due to its spread around the globe. The main causes of the spread are through interaction and transmission of the droplets through coughing and sneezing. The spread can be minimized by isolating the susceptible patients. However, it necessitates remote monitoring to check the breathing issues of the patient remotely to minimize the interactions for spread minimization. Thus, in this article, we offer a wearable-IoTs-centered framework for remote monitoring and recognition of the breathing pattern and abnormal breath detection for timely providing the proper oxygen level required. We propose wearable sensors accelerometer and gyroscope-based breathing time-series data acquisition, temporal features extraction, and machine learning algorithms for pattern detection and abnormality identification. The sensors provide the data through Bluetooth and receive it at the server for further processing and recognition. We collect the six breathing patterns from the twenty subjects and each pattern is recorded for about five minutes. We match prediction accuracies of all machine learning models under study (i.e. Random forest, Gradient boosting tree, Decision tree, and K-nearest neighbor. Our results show that normal breathing and Bradypnea are the most correctly recognized breathing patterns. However, in some cases, algorithm recognizes kussmaul well also. Collectively, the classification outcomes of Random Forest and Gradient Boost Trees are better than the other two algorithms.

  • This paper presents design and VLSI implementations of a reassembly processor for ATM/AAL. The assembly processor is responsible for processing ATM cells from the receive physical interface. It controls the transfer of the AAL payload to host memory and performs all necessary SAR and CPCS checks. We propose the improved structure of cell identification algorithm and smart scatter method for host memory management. The proposed cell identification algorithm quickly locates the appropriate reassembly VC table based on the received VPI./VCI channel value in the ATM header. The cell identification algorithm also allow complete freedom in assignment of VCI/VPI values. The reassembly processor uses a smart scatter method to write cell payload data to host memory. It maintains the scatter operation and controls the incoming DMA block during scatter DMA to host memory. The proposed reassembly processor can perform reassembly checks on AAL. OAM cell. For an AAL5 connection, only CPCS checks, including the CRC32, are performed. In this paper, we proposed a practical reassembly architecture. The design of reassembly processor has become feasible using 0.6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS gate array technology.

  • In the past, satellite development required enormous budget and time, so only some developed countries possessed satellites. However, with the recent emergence of low-budget satellites such as micro-satellites, many countries around the world are participating in satellite development. Low-orbit and geostationary-orbit satellites are used in various fields such as environment and weather monitoring, precise change detection, and disasters. Recently, it has been actively used for monitoring through deep learning-based object-of-interest detection. Until now, Korea has developed satellites for national demand according to the space development plan, and the satellite image obtained through this is used for various purpose in the public and private sectors. Interest in satellite image is continuously increasing in Korea, and various contests are being held to discover ideas for satellite image application and promote technology development. In this special issue, we would like to introduce the topics that participated in the recently held 2022 Satellite Information Application Contest and research on the processing and utilization of KOMPSAT image data.
