  • Background: Testicular tumors constitute a rare type of cancer affecting adolescents and young adults with recent reports confirming an increase in incidence worldwide. The purpose of this study was to estimate the epidemiological characteristics and histological subtypes of testicular tumors in the Lebanese population according to the WHO classification of testicular and paratesticular tumors. Materials and Methods: In this single institutional retrospective study, all patients diagnosed with a testicular tumor in Hotel-Dieu de France Hospital University in Beirut between 1992 and 2014 were enrolled. The age, subtype based on the 2004 WHO classification and body side of tumor were analyzed. Results: A total of two hundred and forty-four (244) patients diagnosed with a testicular tumor in our institution were included in the study. Two hundred and one patients (82.4% of all testicular tumors) had germ cell tumors (TGCT). Among TGCT, 50% were seminomatous tumors, 48% non-seminomatous tumors (NST) and 2% were spermatocytic seminomas. The NST were further divided into mixed germ cell tumors (63.9%), embryonic carcinomas (18.6%), teratomas (15.4%) and yolk sac tumors (2.1%). The mean age for testicular tumors was 32 years. The mean age for germ cell tumors was 31 years and further subtypes such as seminomatous tumors had a mean age of 34 years, 28 years in non-seminomatous tumors and 56 years in spermatocytic seminoma. Patients with right testicular tumor were the predominant group with 55% of patients. Three patients (1.2%) presented with bilateral tumors. Conclusions: The distribution of different subgroups and the mean age for testicular tumors proved comparable to most countries of the world except for some Asian countries. Germ cell tumors are the most common subtype of testicular tumors with seminomatous tumors being slightly more prevalent than non-seminomatous tumors in Lebanese patients.

  • Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are small secondary metabolites produced by organisms that live in environments with high volumes of sunlight, is an important group of novel bioactive compounds having immense biotechnological poten-tials due to their UV screening properties and Polypyrrole (PPy) is a type of organic polymer formed by polymerization of pyrrole. A novel composite nanofilm (~60 nm) of mycosporine-like amino acid (MAA) and polypyrrole is synthesized by interfacial polymerization technique. This composite nanofilm is conductive and has strong photoresponse. A photoelectric UV sensor is fabricated by depositing the composite film onto a silicon chip. This UV sensor shows good sensitivity, selectivity and stability for UV detection.

  • This study is a part of the integrated investigation of the design of Yves Saint Laurent, and aims at examining the background of the appearance of art inspiration which the artistic quality and originality are particularly seen. And also, I would like to examine the source of the power that transcends periods, dealing with issues in the design. From the mid 1960 to 1970, Yves Saint Laurent who leaded the global fashion trend, displayed the Art Inspiration works with the innovation of fashion in Paris, rediscovery of the trends and colors in Modern Art, and background of Entourage and so forth. He brought in the various artistic genres to the fashion, and his Haute Couture collections which were created by the passion for the movie and theater art, expressed the freedom through his strong identity in the Modern Art & Culture and the atmosphere of that period. Eventually his works are reappeared transcending the generations as the fundamental power of Modernity, through the restricted line of his own, strong contrast of colors, and insight for the future.

  • Myxoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that can occur in the head and neck. Laryngeal myxoma is extremely rare and easily confused with a laryngeal polyp. The common clinical presentation is hoarseness, dysphonia, dyspnea and dysphagia depending on their size and location. Treatment for laryngeal myxoma is complete surgical excision with surrounding normal tissue. To our knowledge, 11 laryngeal myxomas have been reported in the English literature, and all patients except only 1 case were male. We report the second female case of myxoma on a vocal cord with a review of literature.

  • Worldwide growth in hydrocarbon and energy demand is driving the oil and gas companies to drill more wells in complex situations such as areas with high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. As a result, in recent years the number of wells in these conditions have been increased significantly. Wellbore instability is one of the main issues during the drilling operation especially for directional and horizontal wells. Many researchers have studied the wellbore stability in complex situations and developed mathematical models to mitigate the instability problems before drilling operation. In this work, a fully coupled thermoporoelastic model is developed to study the well stability in high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. The results show that the performance of the model is highly dependent on the truly evaluated rock mechanical properties. It is noted that the rock mechanical properties should be evaluated at elevated pressures and temperatures. However, in many works, this is skipped and the mechanical properties, which are evaluated at room conditions, are entered into the model. Therefore, an accurate stability analysis of high-pressure, high-temperature wells is achieved by measuring the rock mechanical properties at elevated pressures and temperatures, as the difference between the model outputs is significant.

  • In Easter Island, population is composed by original habitants, the Rapa Nui culture and introduced people, mainly from continental Chile, who have a different ethnic origin. The aim of this research was to describe cancer frequency in resident population in Easter Island, and secondarily compare the findings with other islands of Polynesia and continental Chile. We reviewed the statistics of patients treated in Hanga Roa Hospital during the period 2006-2010, finding a total of 49 patients with cancer during the study. The most frequent cancers in Easter Island's people were breast cancer (8 cases), skin (8 cases), cervical (8 cases), lung (5 cases) and gastric (4 cases). According to gender, in females the most frequent cancer was breast, followed by skin and cervical, while in men, lung, prostate and hematopoietic cancers were the most frequent. Most cases of cervical cancer occurred in women of Rapa Nui ethnicity, while most skin cancers were found in non-Rapa Nui people. In case of the most common cancer in Easter Island, education (e.g. Papanicolaou and mammography screening) and prevention in the community (e.g. use sun block, avoid cigarettes) should be useful tools to reduce incidence.

  • Objective: A persistent trigeminal artery (PTA) may be found incidentally on conventional cerebral angiography and magnetic resonance(MR) angiography. Our goal is to examine the course and relationships of the vessel to the surrounding structures. Methods: Cerebral angiography was performed in 494 patients and MRA in 880; the patients had or were suspected to have cerebrovascular disease. In the images, the incidence, origin, course, and relationships of the PTA were evaluated. Results: A PTA was found in two (0.4%) of the patients undergoing cerebral angiography and three (0.34%) receiving an MR angiography. In four patients, the PTA arose from the lateral part of the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery, then passed caudally and around the base of the dorsum sellae. In the other patient, the PTA arose from the medial aspect of the siphon, and ascended sharply to pierce the dorsum sellae and join the basilar artery. In four cases, there was hypoplasia of a proximal basilar artery below the abnormal communication; the vessel was of increased diameter above the communication. Conclusion: Identification of a PTA with a trans-sellar course is crucial if trans-sphenoidal surgery is planned. Hypoplasia of a proximal basilar artery should not be mistaken for an acquired narrowing.

  • In this study, the flood inundations of the Nam River catchment running through the Uiryeong and Haman regions have been simulated using the numerical model based on quadtree grids. The nonlinear Saint Venant equation is employed as the governing equation for a numerical model in this study. The governing equations are discretized explicitly with a finite difference leap-frog scheme on adaptive hierarchical quadtree grids. Results from this study are compared with those of established numerical models such as the HEC-RAS and the FLUMEN. A numerical model is also simulated according to the frequency variations of flood event. Obtained numerical results show good agreements with them of commercial models. It is found from this study that the flood inundations in the studied area can be occurred at a 500 year frequency event.

  • With recent advances in flexible and stretchable electronics, the development of physically responsive field-effect transistors (physi-FETs) that are easily integrated with transformable substrates may enable the omnipresence of physical sensing devices in electronic gadgets. However, physical stimuli typically induce whole sensing physi-FET devices under global influences that also cause changes in the parameters of FET transducers, such as channel mobility and dielectric capacitance that prevent proper interpretations of response in sensing materials. Extended-gate structures with isolated stimuli have been used recently in physi-FETs to demonstrate performances of sensing materials only. However, such approaches are limited to prototype researches since isolated stimuli rarely occur in real-life applications. In this report, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that integrating piezoelectric nanocomposites directly into flexible organic FETs (OFETs) as gate dielectrics provides a general research direction to physi-FETs with a simple device structure and the capability of precisely investigating functional materials. Measurements with static stimulations, which cannot be performed in conventional systems, exhibited giant-positive d33 values of nanocomposites of barium titanate (BT) NPs and poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)).

  • We investigated the sintering and consolidation phenomena of silver nanoparticles under various thermal treatment conditions when they were patterned by a contact printing technique on polyimide substrate films. The sintering of metastable silver nanoparticles commenced at 180 $^{\circ}C$, where the point necks were formed at the contact points of the nanoparticles to reduce the overall surface area and the overall surface energy. As the temperature was increased up to 250 $^{\circ}C$, silver atoms diffused from the grain boundaries at the intersections and continued to deposit on the interior surface of the pores, thereby filling up the remaining space. When the consolidation temperature exceeded 270 $^{\circ}C$, the capillary force between the spherical silver particles and polyimide flat surface induced the permanent deformation of the polyimide films, leaving crater-shaped indentation marks. The bonding force between the patterned silver metal and polyimide substrate was greatly increased by the heat treatment temperature and the mechanical interlocking by the metal particle indentation.
