  • In this study, effects of pyrite ($FeS_2$) particle sizes on the electrochemical characteristics of thermal batteries are investigated using unit cells made of pulverized pyrite by ball-milling. At $450^{\circ}C$ unit cell discharge test, the electrochemical capacity of $1.46{\mu}m$ pyrite-cell largely increases compared to $98.4{\mu}m$ pyrite-cell, and their internal resistances also decrease. These results are attributed to the increase in the active reaction area of pyrite by ball milling. However, at $500^{\circ}C$ unit cell discharge test, a $1.46{\mu}m$ pyrite cell shows lower internal resistance than that of $98.4{\mu}m$ pyrite cell only at Z-phase region ($FeS_2{\rightarrow}Li_3Fe_2S_4$). After that, a $1.46{\mu}m$ pyrite cell shows a decrease in the cell voltage and an rapid increase of the internal resistance in J-phase region ($Li_3Fe_2S_4{\rightarrow}LiFe_2S_4$) is observed compared to those of $98.4{\mu}m$ pyrite cell. It can be concluded that at the higher temperature, the thermally unstable pulverized pyrite is decomposed thermally as well as self discharged, simultaneously, which causes the higher resistance and lower capacity at $500^{\circ}C$ in J-phase than that of $98.4{\mu}m$ pyrite cell.

  • The electrical characterstic of earth is the most dominant factor for grounding design and an earth is typically represented by a uniform medium with the specific earth resistivity, which is unique for a specific site. For a hand-working grounding design using a specific earth resistivity requires a process converting a real earth of complex medium into a simple uniform medium In this paper, we suggest a procedure to convert a multi-layered earth s into a simpler uniform earth for grounding design of Myanmar 500[kV] transmission towers.

  • In this study, seismic performance tests for 500 kV EBA are conducted through the IEEE Std. 693. It is hard to conduct both the static tests and dynamic tests for 500 kV EBA as IEEE Std. 693 because the size of specimen, 9 m in height, is too large to be examined. To do so, it can cause the unnecessary time and cost, and also the damage on the specimen. However, in this study, both static tests and dynamic tests are conducted in the same test field as IEEE Std. 693 to achieve more accurate and reliable test results. From the test results Taihan Electric Wire Co. can win contract for 500 kV extra-high voltage project in the U.S.A., therefore it can be evaluated that the tests are conducted successfully and the capability to estimate large electric power facilities are achieved as IEEE Std. 693.

  • The present study deals with the simulation of low velocity impact on prestressed and reinforced concrete (RC) slabs supported with different end conditions. The prestress is pre-applied on the RC slab in an analytical approach for the prestressed slab. RC slabs with dimensions $500{\times}600{\times}60mm$, $500{\times}600{\times}80mm$ and $500{\times}600{\times}120mm$ were used by changing support condition in two different ways; (i) Opposite sides simply supported, (ii) Adjacent sides simply supported with opposite corner propped. Deflection response of these specimens were found for the impact due to three different velocities. The effect of grade of concrete on deflection due to the impact of these slabs were also studied. Deflection result of $500{\times}500{\times}50mm$ slab was calculated numerically and compared the result with the available experimental result in literature. Finite element analyses were performed using commercially available ANSYS 16.2 software. The effectiveness of prestressing on impact resistant capacity of RC slabs are demonstrated by the way of comparing the deflection of RC slabs under similar impact loadings.

  • To prevent toxicity from both robax platinum (methocarbamol, ibuprofen) and robaxacet (methocarbomol, acetaminophen), separately, we used stretches and naproxen as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to compare each effectiveness. This study used the United States Forces Korea Prescription form (Annex A-Over-The-Counter Prescription) and Alice Rich's Pain scale with robax platinum, robaxacet including narproxen. The IBM SPSS statics version 24 was used to calculate the data. The combined methocarbamol 500 mg, acetaminophen 325 mg tablet, and ibuprofen 200 mg (or naproxen) tablet can work as well as the combined methocarbamol 500 mg tablet with acetaminophen 325 mg tablet with stretches. Both methods were successful in managing pain. The drug combination of methocarbamol 500 mg, acetaminophen 325 mg and ibuprofen 200 mg tablets yielded similar benefits as the methocarbamol 500 mg and acetaminophen 325 mg tablets paired with physical stretching exercises regarding managing overall pain.

  • Toxic effects of heavy metal (Pb, Cr, As) were examined by the hatching rates of fertilized eggs in the oliver flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Eggs were exposed to Pb, Cr, As (0, 10, 100, 500, 1,000, 2,500, 5,000 ppb) and then normal hatching rates were investigated after 48 h. The normal hatching rates in the control condition (not including heavy metal) were greater than 80%, but suddenly decreased with increasing of heavy metal concentrations. Pb, Cr and As reduced the normal hatching rates in concentration-dependent way and a significant reduction occurred at concentration grater than 100, 100, 500 ppb, respectively. The ranking of heavy metal toxicity was Cr>As>Pb, with $EC_{50}$ values of 415, 518 and 1,029 ppb, respectively. The no-observed-effect-concentration (NOEC) and lowest-observed-effect-concentration (LOEC) show each 100 bbp and 500 ppb of normal hatching rates in exposed to Pb and As. The NOEC and LOEC of normal hatching rates in Cr were 10 ppb and 100 ppb, respectively. From these results, the normal hatching rates of P. olivaceus have toxic effect at greater than the 100 ppb concentrations in Pb, As and the 10 ppb concentrations in Cr in natural ecosystems. These results suggest that biological assay using the normal hatching rates of P. olivaceus are very useful test method for the toxicity assessment of a toxic substance as heavy metal in marine ecosystems.

  • Variation in oxidation behavior with heat treatment temperature is investigated for a Ni-Ti alloy using X-ray diffraction, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and Auger electron spectroscopy. And the effect of oxidation on transformation behavior and superelasticity is characterized. A cold-worked 50.6Ni-Ti alloy is oxidized at 300-$700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in the air atmosphere. With an increase in heating temperature, the structure of $TiO_2$ changes from amorphous (300 and $400^{\circ}C$) to anatase ($500^{\circ}C$), and to rutile ($700^{\circ}C$). Activation energy of oxidation for NiTi is measured to be 51 Kcal/mol when heating temperature is $500^{\circ}C$ or above. Since Ti reacts preferably with oxygen, Ni content increases between matrix and oxide, forming $Ni_{3}Ti$ compounds. The resultant of oxidation decreases significantly $M_s$ and $A_s$ temperature in the specimen oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ with $B_2{\rightarrow}M$ transformation path. An extra is found on cooling between two peaks in the specimen with $B_2{\rightarrow}R{\rightarrow}M$ one which is oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ and aged at $500^{\circ}C$. Oxidation deteriorates superelasticity due to formation of Ni-rich compound.

  • Cymbidium mosaic virus (CyMV) was purified from CyMV infected orchid plant leaves by Sephacryl S-500 HR column chromatography. Partial purification was done by solubilization with Triton X-100 (alkylphenoxypolyethoxy ethanol) and precipitation with polyethylene glycol (PEG 6,000) followed by ultracentrifugation on 30% sucrose cushion. Based on the spectrophotometric analysis, 33 mg of CyMV could be obtained form 100 g of CyMV-infected orchid plant leaves. The purified CyMV represented one distinct homogeneous band by SDS-PAGE, and electron microscopy revealed that it was highly homogeneous and not fragmented. Bioassay demonstrated that the purified CyMV had a normal infectivity to Chenopodium amaranticolor and orchid plants. Based on these results, the purification method in this work could be served as an improved method for the purification of CyMV and similar viruses with good yield, high purity and native integrity.

  • Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) has been developed by Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) since 2003. Ocean Color Imager (OCI) is the one of COMS payloads, which will monitor the marine environment around Korean peninsula routinely with the intermediate resolution. But considering COMS is to be located in the geostationary orbit, required geographical coverage is not positioned in the nadir direction of COMS but in specific location with horizontal and vertical offsets from the nadir. In this study, coverage by OCI Field Of View (FOV) is analyzed. First of all, OCI is modeled as the sensor which is a $2,500{\times}2,500$ sized 2-D CCD and the pixel resolution is about 500m. And then, OCI is simulated to be controlled to target the required coverage accurately. As a result of it, coverage by OCI FOV is determined. Finally, all coverages by OCI FOV are mapped.

  • A 10-b 500 MS/s A/D converter (ADC) with a hybrid calibration and error correction logic is described. The ADC employs a single-channel cascaded folding-interpolating architecture whose folding rate (FR) is 25 and interpolation rate (IR) is 8. To overcome the disadvantage of an offset error, we propose a hybrid self-calibration circuit at the open-loop amplifier. Further, a novel prevision digital error correction logic (DCL) for the folding ADC is also proposed. The ADC prototype using a 130 nm 1P6M CMOS has a DNL of ${\pm}0.8$ LSB and an INL of ${\pm}1.0$ LSB. The measured SNDR is 52.34-dB and SFDR is 62.04-dBc when the input frequency is 78.15 MHz at 500 MS/s conversion rate. The SNDR of the ADC is 7-dB higher than the same circuit without the proposed calibration. The effective chip area is $1.55mm^2$, and the power dissipates 300 mW including peripheral circuits, at a 1.2/1.5 V power supply.
