Determination of Design Waves along the South Coast of Korea (한국남해만에서의 설계파의 결정)

  • For determination of the design wves at the seven selected sites in the South Sea, a method of hindcasting the past annual largest significant waves from the records of both the wind speed at the nearby weather stations and the weather charts of typhoons are utilized. The design significant waves in deep water are determined through the extremal probability analysis for three major wave directions(SW, S, SE) at each site from the annual extremal series of wave heights. Design significant wave heights with the return period of 100 years ranged between 4.6m and 8.8m with the wave period ranging between 8.2 seconds and 12.9 seconds. Through the analysis of weather maps, both the fetches for the wind directions SW-SE along the South Coast and the relationship between the wind speed at sea and the wind speed at the nearby land weather stations for seasonal winds are determined. The wind speed at sea are found to be 0.8-0.9 times the wind speed at the land stations for $U_1$>15m/s. The ratio of the duration-averaged wind speed to the maximum wind speed varies between 0.7-0.9 as a negative exponential function for the duration ranging 2< t< 13 hours.

A comparison of lytic activity of swine and chicken phages with Staphylococcus hyicus of swine, chicken and cattle origin (돼지, 닭 및 소유래 Staphylococcus hyicus에 대한 swine phage와 chicken phage의 용균능 비교)

  • The lytic activity of the set of swine and chicken phages which were derived from lysogenic Staphylococcus hyicus strains of swine and chicken origin was compared by means of S. hyicus isolated from swine, chicken and cattle. Of the 80 strains each from swine and chicken, 71 (88.8%) of strains from swine and all the strains of chicken origin were found to be lysogenic. Swine phages showed wider range of lytic activity to the examined strains than that of chicken phages. Using chicken phages at $100{\times}routine$ test dilution (RTD), 25.0%, 85.6% and 50.0% of swine, chicken and bovine strains were lysed, respectively. However, when the set of swine phages was used at $100{\times}RTD$, higher frequency of the typable strains was found in strains of swine and chicken origin (73.8% and 90.2%). Phage F12 and L16 from chicken set were found to be highly active with chicken and bovine strains. On the contrary, all the swine strains were completely resistant to lysis by the two phages at $100{\times}RTD$. Thirteen (12.5%) of 104 S. aureus strains, 1 (1.8%) of 55 S. simudance strains, 31 (58.5%) of 53 S. chromo genes strains, and none of 31 strains of other coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species isolated from bovine mastitis were typable with the set of swine phages.

A study of asbestos containing material characteristics and grade of risk assessment in schools, Korea (일부 학교 건축물의 석면함유 건축자재(ACM) 특성과 위해등급에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the distribution of asbestos containing materials and to evaluate risk assessment method in some schools, Korea. For the survey on ACM risk assessment, we used both EPA AHERA rule and ASTM rule. We investigated 100 schools between January and December in 2010. Detection rate of the ACM according to construction year showed that before 1980's, 1990's, 2000's, after 2000's buildings were 100%, 94.1%, 100% and 62.5%, respectively. Compared with school types, detection rate of the ACM in Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle, High, Special Education schools were 100%, 97.1%, 92.9%, 100%, 80%, respectively. Ceiling textiles contained chrysolite/mixed amosite(2~8 %) and wall cement flat boards contained chrysolite(6~11 %). Also, gasket contained chrysolite(16~17 %), slate roof contained chrysolite(10~13 %). In this study, risk assessment EPA AHERA rule of ACM showed that all materials were "Pool" grade. And, ASTM rule risk assessment showed that all materials were "Q&M program" grade.

Isolation and characterization of a lytic Salmonella Typhimurium-specific phage as a potential biofilm control agent

  • This study aimed to characterize a lytic Salmonella Typhimurium-specific (ST) phage and its biofilm control capability against S. Typhimurium biofilm on polypropylene surface. ST phage was isolated, propagated, and purified from water used in a slaughterhouse. The morphology of ST phage was observed via transmission electron microscopy. Its bactericidal effect was evaluated by determining bacterial concentrations after the phage treatment at various multiplicities of infection (MOIs) of 0.01, 1.0, and 100. Once the biofilm was formed on the polypropylene tube after incubation at 37℃ for 48 h, the phage was treated and its antibiofilm capability was determined using crystal violet staining and plate count method. The phage was isolated and purified at a final concentration of ~11 log PFU/mL. It was identified as a myophage with an icosahedral head (~104 nm) and contractile tail (~90-115 nm). ST phage could significantly decrease S. Typhimurium population by ~2.8 log CFU/mL at an MOI of 100. After incubation for 48 h, biofilm formation on polypropylene surface was confirmed with a bacterial population of ~6.9 log CFU/cm2. After 1 h treatment with ST phage, the bacterial population in the biofilm was reduced by 2.8 log CFU/cm2. Therefore, these results suggest that lytic ST phage as a promising biofilm control agent for eradicating S. Typhimurium biofilm formed on food contact surfaces.

A Clinical and Pathological Analysis of Children with Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis According to the Clinical Manifestations at Presentation (발견 양상에 따른 소아 막증식성 사구체신염의 임상적 및 병리조직학적분석)

  • Purpose: Membranoproliferative glomeulonephritis(MPGN) has been diagnosed in an increasing number of asymptomatic cases. These cases have been detected by school urinary screening test even though the total cases of MPGN show a decreasing trend. We have analyzed the clinical and pathological characteristics of children with MPGN according to the clinical manifestations at the time of disease presentation. Methods: A total of 18 patients who had been diagnosed with idiopathic MPGN by percutaneous renal biopsy from January 1990 to February 2004 were involved in our study. The patients were divided into 2 groups as the school urinary screening(A) group and the symptomatic(S) group according to the clinical manifestations at the time of disease presentation. Results: Out of the total 18 patients, 8(44.4%) were in the S group and 10(55.6%) were in the A group. The mean serum total protein, albumin and $C_3$ levels in the S group were significantly lower than those levels of the A group, respectively($4.9{\pm}1.2\;g/dL,\;vs\;7.0{\pm}0.5\;g/dL\;P=0.002,\;2.8{\pm}0.9\;g/dL\;vs.\;4.1{\pm}0.3\;g/dL\;P=0.002,\;63.9{\pm}36.4\;mg/dL\;vs.\;100.8{\pm}39.5\;g/dL\;P=0.041$). The mean total protein amount of 24 hour collected urine in the S group were significantly higher than that of the A group($3684.0{\pm}2601.3\;mg/m^2\;vs.\;559.4{\pm}4.6.9\;mg/m^2$, respectively, P=0.001). Hypocomplementemia was observed in 11(61.1%) out of 18 patients at the time of disease onset, 7(87.5%) in the S group and 4(40%) in the A group. However the hypocomplementemia was decreased in 6(33.3%) out of 18 patients at the time of final follow-up, 3(37.5%) in the S group and 3(30%) in the A group. According to the pathologic type, hypocomplementemia was observed 8 patients(61.5%) with type I disease, 1 patients (100%) with type II disease, 2 patients(50%) in type III disease at the disease onset, but 4 patients(30.8%) in type I disease, 1 patient(100%) in type II disease, 1 patient(33.3%) with type III disease at the time of last follow-up. The incidence of cellular crescent formation and tubular atropy. as observed on light microscopy, were higher in the S group compared to the A group. Mean grade of capillary wall thickening and, mesangial proliferation were significantly higher in the S group. Conclusion: MPGN, as diagnosed in patients with only asymptomatic urinary abnormalities, has been increasing, it is more frequent in asymptomatic patients than in patients with presenting symptoms. Our result suggests that MPGN should be considered in the renal biopsy diagnosis regardless of serum $C_3$ level when urinary abnormalities are found by school urinary screening test.

An Implementation of Pattern Recognition Algorithm for Fast Paper Currency Counting (고속 지폐 계수를 위한 패턴 인식 알고리즘 구현)

  • In this paper, we suggest an efficient image processing method for fast paper currency counting with pattern recognition. The patterns are consisted of feature data in each note object extracted from full reflection image of notes and a general contact image sensor(CIS) is used to aggregate the feature images. The proposed pattern recognition algorithm can endure image variation when the paper currency is scanned because it is not sensitive to changes of image resulting in successful note recognition. We tested 100 notes per denomination and currency of several countries including Korea, U.S., China, EU, Britain and Turkey. To ensure the reliability of the result, we tested a total of 10 times per each direction of notes. We can conclude that this algorithm will be applicable to commercial product because of its successful recognition rates. The 100% recognition rates are obtained in almost cases with exceptional case of 99.9% in Euro and 99.8% in Turkish Lira.

Photocatalysis of Sub-ppm-level Isopropyl Alcohol by Plug-flow Reactor Coated with Nonmetal Elements Irradiated with Visible Light

  • This work explored the characteristics and the photocatalytic activities of S element-doped $TiO_2$ (S-$TiO_2$) and N element-doped $TiO_2$ (N-$TiO_2$) for the decomposition of gas-phase isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at sub-ppm concentrations, using a plug-flow reactor irradiated by 8-W daylight lamp or visible light-emitting-diodes (LEDs). In addition, the generation yield of acetone during photocatalytic processes for IPA at sub-ppm levels was examined. The surface characteristics of prepared S- and N-$TiO_2$ photocatalysts were analyzed to indicate that they could be effectively activated by visible-light irradiation. Regarding both types of photocatalysts, the cleaning efficiency of IPA increased as the air flow rate (AFR) was decreased. The average cleaning efficiency determined via the S-$TiO_2$ system for the AFR of 2.0 L $min^{-1}$ was 39%, whereas it was close to 100% for the AFR of 0.1 L $min^{-1}$. Regarding the N-$TiO_2$ system, the average cleaning efficiency for the AFR of 2.0 L $min^{-1}$ was above 90%, whereas it was still close to 100% for the AFR of 0.1 L $min^{-1}$. In contrast to the cleaning efficiencies of IPA, both types of photocatalysts revealed a decreasing trend in the generation yields of acetone with decreasing the AFR. Consequently, the N-$TiO_2$ system was preferred for cleaning of sub-ppm IPA to S-$TiO_2$ system and should be operated under low AFR conditions to minimize the acetone generation. In addition, 8-W daylight lamp exhibited higher cleaning efficiency of IPA than for visible LEDs.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the effects of Korean Job's tears on increasing control of body weight and organ and lipid in rats which were devided into control group, 10% Job's tears group(A), 20% Job's tears group(B), 30% Job's tears group(C), 60% Job's tears group(D) during 10 week administration after 3 week adaption before the experiment. 1. Food intake amount and food efficiency ratio decreased much better Job's tears amount in diet controled of body weight increasing. 2. The organ weight in 100g body weight heavier better 60% Job's tears group(D) then control group. 3. Serum lipid level are rowed Total cholesterol, Free-cholesterol levels in 60% Job's tears group, showed highed of HDL-cholesterol, TG levels.

Investigation on the characteristics of a cavity-dumped Nd:glass laser (Cavity-dumping형 Nd:glass laser의 제작 및 특성 조사)

  • A small signal gain coefficient of Nd:glass was measured and a cavity-dumped laser was constructed. To measure the small signal gain coefficient, we constructed a resonator consisting of Nd:glass, Pockels cell, polarizing beam splitter. The measured small signal gain coefficient was $0.088 cm_{-1}$ when the input energy was 100 J and the round-trip internal loss of the resonator was 56%. The cavity-dumped laser was constructed using Nd:glass. 2 m radius of curvature HR-mirrors, Pockels cell, polarizinig beam splitter and $\lambda/4$ plate. The output energy of cavity-dumped laser was 0.85 J at 140 J input energy and the laser pulse width was 8 ns.s 8 ns.

A Low Power Charge Sharing ROM using Dummy Bit Lines (더미 비트라인을 이용한 저전력 전하공유 롬)

  • A shared-capacitor charge-sharing ROM (SCCS-ROM) using dummy bit lines is proposed. The SCCS-ROM reduces the bit line swing voltage using the charge-sharing technique of the conventional charge-sharing ROM (CS-ROM). Although the CS-ROM needs three small capacitors per output bit, the proposed SCCS-ROM shares the capacitors so that it needs only three capacitors. The SCCS-ROM implements the capacitors using dummy bit lines. This not only increases noise immunity but also reduces power. A SCCS-ROM with 8K${\times}$15bits implemented in a 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS process. The SCCS-ROM consumes 8.63㎽ at 100MHz with 3.3V The simulation results show that the SCCS-ROM reduces 8.4% power compared to the CS-ROM.
