  • The explicit and implicit time integration methods are applied effectively to analyze sheet metal stamping processes, which include the forming stage and the springback stage consecutively. The explicit time integration method has better merits in the forming stage including highly complicated three-dimensional contact conditions. By contrary, the implicit time integration method is better for analyzing springback since the complicated contact conditions are removd and the computing time to get the final static state is short. In this work, brief descriptions of the formulation and the factor study for springback simulations are presented. Further, the simulated results for the S-rail and the roof pannel stamping processes are shown and discussed.

  • In order to evaluate spring-back behavior in automotive sheet forming processes, a panel shape idealized as a double S-rail has been investigated. After spring-back has been predicted for double S-rails using the finite element analysis, results has been compared with experimental measurements for three automotive sheets. To account for hardening behavior such as the Bauschinger and transient effects in addition to anisotropic behavior, the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening law based on the Chaboche type model and a recently developed non-quadratic anisotropic yield function have been utilized, respectively.

  • A hot forming of large thick Al plate using a grid-type hybrid die is a process to make a shell plate for the production of a spherical LNG tank. This process is characterized by using a grid-typed die with an additional air cooling system for reducing the cooling time of the heated plate after hot forming. The process consists of the plate's feeding, heating, forming and cooling in detail and each of them is continuously performed along the rail. This paper was designed to propose the analytical and experimental methods for determining the convection and interfacial heat transfer coefficients required in hot forming analysis of Al plate. These values in the analysis are to reproduce numerically the cooling performance of grid-typed die and cooling device. Interfacial heat transfer was obtained from the heat transfer experiments for different pressures and inverse analysis method. To verify the efficiency of the coefficient values obtained from above methods, FE analysis and experiment of the hot spherical-forming process were conducted for a small-scaled model. The convection coefficient was also calculated from flow analysis of air released by cooling device within grid-typed die using ANSYS-CFX.

  • Spring-back of MS1470 steel sheets was numerically predicted using a non-linear kinematic hardening material behavior based on the Yoshida-Uemori model. From uniaxial tension and uniaxial tension-compression-tension data as well as the uniaxial tension-unloading-tension data, the parameters of the Yoshida-Uemori model were obtained. For the numerical simulations, the Yoshida-Uemori model was implemented into the commercial finite element program, ABAQUS/Explicit and ABAQUS/Standard using the user-defined material subroutines. The model performance was validated against the measured spring-back from the benchmark problems of NUMISHEET 2008 and NUMISHEET 2011, the 2-D draw bending test and the S-rail forming test, respectively.

  • In the current study finite element forming analysis is performed to understand the final geometric accuracy limitations for the stamping of an automotive S-rail from four different steel sheets having tensile strengths of 340MPa, 440MPa, 590MPa and 780MPa. Comparisons between the analysis and the experiments for both springback and formability as measured by the amount of edge draw-in and the thickness distribution were conducted. The springback modes were classified according to a scheme proposed in the current investigation and the error was calculated using the normalized root mean square error method. While the analysis results show fairly good agreement with the experimental data for deformation and formability, the simulation accuracy is lower for predicting wall curl, camber and section twist as the UTS of steel sheet increases.

  • In the current study, automatic tool compensation is accomplished by using a finite element stamping analysis for a center roof rail made of UHSS in order to satisfy the specifications for shape accuracy. The initial blank shape is calculated from a finite element inverse analysis and potential forming defects such as tearing and wrinkling are determined by the finite element stamping analysis based on the initial tool shape. The blank shape is optimized to meet the shape requirements of the final product with the stamping analysis, and die compensation is determined with the information about springback. The specifications for shape accuracy were successfully achieved by the proposed die compensation scheme using the finite element stamping analysis. The current study demonstrates that the compensation tendency is similar when the proposed scheme is used or when the compensation is performed by trial and error in the press-shop. This similarity verifies that the automatic compensation scheme can be used effectively in the first stage of tool design especially for components made from UHSS.

  • Uiwang ICD, which is the only inland container depot in the capital area, is equipped with modern facilities, and loading and unloading equipment, and can handle 1,000,000 TEU annually. It has many advantages such as advantageous conditions of location, the role of foothold for distribution transportation in the capital area, so it plays an important role of vitalizing the railroad transport. However, Uiwang ICD has reached the limit in the vitalization of railroad transport of containerized cargo due to the current problems in facilities and operations. This research analyzed the Uiwang ICD's problems by dividing them into facilities problems and operational problems, and presented short-term and medium and long-term improvement measures with the year 2023 when the private use permission expires as the basic year. However, the vitalization of railroad transport of Uiwang ICD can be attained only when it has support and cooperation from the government, Uiwang-si, Korea Rail Network Authority, and other related organizations together with efforts of Korea Railroad Corporation, and occupant companies. Such improvement measures for Uiwang ICD are expected to contribute to establishing combined transport system and forming efficient railroad distribution infrastructures and vitalizing railroad distribution, and also contribute to the government's low-carbon green growth policy by building environment-friendly transport system.
