  • Effects of annealing treatment on microstructure and mechanical property of co-sputtered TiNi thin films were studied. As-deposited films showed amorphous state. However, above annealing temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ martensite phase (B19'), precipitate phase ($Ti_2Ni$) and a small amount of parent phase ($B_2$) were present, and phase transformation behaviors were three multi-step phase transformations $B19^{\prime}{\rightarrow}B_2$ and $B_2{\rightarrow}R-phase$ and $R-phase{\rightarrow}B19^{\prime}$. Increase of martensite transformation temperature, increase of microhardness and Young's modulus of TiNi films annealed above $500^{\circ}C$ were discussed in terms of precipitate phase.

  • In this paper it is reported that a comprehensive study of the crystal structure of the fine size S-phase ($Al_2CuMg$) precipitate in Al-Cu-Mg alloy by electron diffraction experiments. The experiments involve taking the selected area diffraction pattern for a S-phase particle, simulations of the pattern based on the kinematical diffraction theory and quantitative data collection from the zone axis diffraction patterns for the comparison with calculated diffraction intensity using both the kinematical and the dynamical diffraction theory. As a result, a good fitting model of the S-phase structure turns out to be the model reported early by X-ray methods (Perlitz & Westgren, 1943), not the new model determined by HRTEM methods (Radmilovic et al., 1999).

  • The phase of Cu,Zn,Al precursors strongly affects the activity of their final catalysts. Herein, the Cu,Zn,Al precursor was prepared by precipitation of $Al^{3+}$ onto primitive, amorphous Cu,Zn precipitate. This precursor turned out to be a phase mixture of zincian malachite and hydrotalcite in which the latter phase was less abundant compared to the co-precipitated precursor. The final catalyst derived from this precursor exhibited a little higher copper surface area and methanol synthesis activity than the co-precipitated counterpart. Therefore, the two precursor phases need to be mixed in an adequate proportion for the preparation of active $Cu/ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst.

  • The magneto-optical properties of Co/Co$_2$TiSn two-phase magnet films were studied. These films show that relatively large Kerr rotations which are -0.4 deg. at the wavelength of 400 nm, compared to that of pure Co. It is conceivable that the magneto-optical effects may be due to both contributions of ferromagnetic Co matrix and ferromagnetic Co$_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitate. The perpendicular magnetization curve domonstrates a typical bubble domain hysteresis loop. the saturation magnetization change of the annealed film is less sensitive to temperature in the low temperature region and the Curie temperature of Co$_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitate is a little higher in the annealed film. These can be explained by the increase of the number of Co-Co exchange interaction in Heusler alloy structure resulting from the change of chemical ordering by annealing.

  • Microstructural characteristics of directionally solidified René 80 superalloy are investigated with optical microscope and scanning electron microscope; solidification velocity is found to change from 25 to 200 μm/s under the condition of constant thermal gradient (G) and constant alloy composition (Co). Based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, γ phase (1,322 ℃), MC carbide (1,278 ℃), γ/γ' eutectic phase (1,202 ℃), and γ' precipitate (1,136 ℃) are formed sequentially during cooling process. The size of the MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phases gradually decrease with increasing solidification velocity, whereas the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are nearly constant as a function of solidification velocity. It is estimated that the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are determined not by the solidification velocity but by the alloy composition. Microstructural characteristics of René 80 superalloy after solid solution heat-treatment and primary aging heat-treatment are such that the size and the area fraction of γ' precipitate are nearly constant with solidification velocity and the area fraction of γ/γ' eutectic phase decreases from 1.7 % to 0.955 %, which is also constant regardless of the solidification velocity. However, the size of carbide solely decreases with increasing solidification velocity, which influences the tensile properties at room temperature.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the precipitation behavior of ${\chi}$ phase and effect of ${\chi}$ phase precipitation on the impact toughness of 25%Cr-7%Ni-4%Mo super duplex stainless steel. It was proved that the ${\chi}$ phase was a intermetallic compound, which represented the higher chromium and molybdenum concentration than the matrix phases, and also showed the higher molybdenum concentration than the ${\sigma}$ phase. The ${\chi}$ phase was precipitated at the interface between ferrite and austenite or inside the ferrite matrix in the early stage of aging. The number of ${\chi}$ phase precipitates increased with increasing aging time, however, after showing the maximum value, the number was decreased due to the gradual transformation of ${\chi}$ phase into ${\sigma}$-phase. Aging ferrite phase was decomposed by the $r^2$ phase and ${\sigma}$-phase. Impact toughness rapidly decreased with time in the initial stage of aging at ${\chi}$ phase start to precipitate. Thus, the impact toughness was greatly influence for the precipitation of ${\chi}$ phase.

  • The dissolution and precipitation of Nb, which has been known as strong carbide-forming element, play a key role in controlling phase transformation kinetics of microalloyed steels. In this study, we analyzed both numerically and experimentally the precipitation behavior of Nb-microalloyed steel and its effect on the austenite decomposition during cooling. Nb precipitation in austenite matrix could be predicted by the thermo-kinetic software MatCalc, in which interfacial energy between precipitate and matrix is calculated. The simulated precipitation kinetics fairly well agrees with the experimental observations by TEM. Austenite decomposition, which is strongly affected by Nb precipitation during cooling, was measured by dilatometry and was modeled on the basis of a Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmorgorov(JMAK) equation. It was confirmed that the dissolved Nb delays the austenite decomposition, whereas, the precipitated Nb accelerates phase transformation during the austenite decomposition.

  • Microstructure of A356 aluminum alloys cast in the permanent mold was investigated by optical microscope and image analyzer, with particular respect to the shape and size distribution of iron intermetallics known as ${\beta}-phase$ ($Al_5FeSi$). Morphologies of the ${\beta}-phase$ was found to change gradually with the Be:Fe ratio like these. In Be-free alloys, ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was well developed, but script phase was appeared when the Be:Fe ratio is above 0.2:1. With the Be:Fe ratios of 0.4:1-1:1, script phase as well as Be-rich phase was also observed. In case of higher Be addition, above 1:1, Be-rich phase was observed on all regions of the specimens, and increasing of the Be:Fe ratios gradually make the Be-rich phase coarse. It was also observed that the ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was coarsened with increase of the Fe content in Be-free alloys. However, in Be-added alloys, length and number of these ${\beta}-phases$ were considerably decreased with the increased Be:Fe ratio. Beryllium addition improved tensile properties and impact toughness of the A356 aluminium alloy, due to the formation of a script phase or a Be-rich phase instead of a needlelike ${\beta}-phase$. The DSC tests indicated that the presence of Be could increase the amount of Mg which is available for $Mg_2Si$ precipitate hardening, and enhance the precipitation kinetics by lowering the ternary eutectic temperature.

  • Effects of V on both the formation of Ti-Nb-V carbonitrides and mechanical properties of Ti-Nb bearing low carbon HSLA steels were investigated. Hot rolling process was simulated by using Gleeble 3500 system with the steels containing three different levels of V ($0{\sim}0.1wt.%$). Vanadium precipitated as Ti-Nb-V carbonitrides at austenite region but it did not precipitate as VC during austenite to acicular ferrite or bainitic ferrite phase transformation. As V content increased, the amount of Nb precipitates was decreased but the average size of Ti-Nb-V carbonitrides was increased due to larger diffusivity of V than that of Nb. Coarsened Ti-Nb-V carbonitrides could act as heterogeneous nucleation site during ${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$ phase transformation, thus, acicular ferrite transformation was promoted as V content increased, resulting in increase of upper shelf energy.

  • The strain fields due to precipitates, especially S-phase $(Al_2CuMg)$ particles in Al-2.5Cu-1.5Mg wt.% alloy were first investigated with Large Angle Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction (LACBED) method. The work involves LACBED pattern simulations to estimate possibly the strength of the strain fields. To do this the morphology of S-particle was optimized as a cylindrical shape with $a_s$ axis, and the displacement vector of strain fields was assumed to be perpendicular to $a_s$ axis. With this simple model the reasonable fittings between the observed patterns of the strain fields and simulations were obtained. And in the early aging stage of the alloy the significant strain fields were not observed. As a result of this study it is expected that the strain fields due to S-phase precipitates in the stage with maximum hardness would make a complex networks to possibly contribute to hardiness of the alloy.
