This study was conducted to develop a serum-free, defined medium of IVM of pig oocytes. The TCM-199 with supplemented with polyvinylalcohol(PVA), polyvinylpyrrollidone(PVP) and porcine follicular fluid(pFF) were used as basal medium. The effects of the these additives on the rates of maturity and development under in-vitro fertilization and in vitro culture were examined and subsequently considered on the possibilities be sustituted for the bovine serum albumin(BSA). Maturation rate of pig oocytes in IVM media containing PVA(82.4%), pFF(89.4%) and BSA(90.0%) were significantly higher(P<0.05) than that of PVP(78.6%). Cleavage rate after IVF of PVP(64%) was significantly lower(P<0.05) than these of PVA(73%), pFF(77%) and BSA(73%) supplements. in vitro development rates to morulae and blastocyst on PVP(54%) were also significantly lower(P<0.05) than these of the supplements of PVA(63%), pFF(69%) and BSA(65%). In comparison of maturation and fertilization rates of pig oocytes in each supplements, the maturity rates of PVA(82.4%), pFF(89.4%) and BSA(90.0%) were significantly lower(P<0.05) than that of PVP(72.4%) and while, the fertilization rates of pFF(87.1%) and BSA(89.1%) were significantly higher(P<0.05) than these of PVA(78.0%) and PVP(70.6%). It may be concluded that PVA and pFF can be substituted far BSA in medium for culturing pig oocytes; however, it may be considered that PVP were limited to for BSA in the in vitro culture of the embryos.

Petroleum-based plastics are used for various purposes and pose a significant threat to the earth's environment and ecosystem. Many efforts have been taken globally in different areas to find alternatives. As part of these efforts, this study manufactured alginate-based polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blended films by casting from an aqueous solution prepared by mixing 10 wt% petroleum-based PVA with biodegradable, marine biomass-derived alginate. Glutaraldehyde was used as a cross-linking agent, and cardanol, an alkyl phenol-based bio-oil extracted from cashew nut shell, was added in the range of 0.1 to 2.0 wt% to grant antibacterial activity to the films. FTIR and TGA were performed to characterize the manufactured blended films, and the tensile strength, degree of swelling, and antibacterial activity were measured. Results obtained from the FTIR, TGA, and tensile strength test showed that alginate, the main component, was well distributed in the PVA by forming a matrix phase. The brittleness of alginate, a known weakness as a single component, and the low thermal durability of PVA were improved by cross-linking and hydrogen bonding of the functional groups between alginate and PVA. Addition of cardanol to the alginate-based PVA blend significantly improved the antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The antibacterial performance was excellent with a death rate of 98% or higher for S. aureus and about 70% for E. coli at a contact time of 60 minutes. The optimal antibacterial activity of the alginate-PVA blended films was found with a cardanol content range between 0.1 to 0.5 wt%. These results show that cardanol-containing alginate-PVA blended films are suitable for use as various antibacterial materials, including as food packaging.

Photoproduction of hydrogen by free and polyvinylalcohol (PVA)-immobilized spinach chloroplasts was investigated. Immobilization of chloroplast with PVA increased the functional stability of the chloroplast during storage. PVA-immobilized chloroplasts preserved photosynthetic electron transport activity much better than free chloroplasts. The hydrogen production of free chloroplast decreased to 17% of initial activity after storage of six days. The hydrogen production of the PVA-immobilized chloroplast, however, showed 44% of initial activity after storage of 15 days. The maximal rate of hydrogen production was accomplished at 2$^{\circ}C$ under the light intensity above 116 $\mu$E.m-2.s-1. The amount of hydrogen produced was proportional to the chlorophyll concentration. The hydrogen production was inhibited by DCMU treatment, indicating hydrogen production is dependent on photosynthetic electron transport. These results suggest that PVA is a good candidate for the immobilization matrix of chloroplasts for the photoproduction of hydrogen.
Contact pressure distribution between PVA brush and semiconductor wafer was measured by developing a test setup which could simulates the post CMP cleaning process. The test set-up used thin film type pressure sensor which could measure the pressure distribution of contact area with the resolution of $15.5ea/cm^2$. As the experimental results, it was verified that there had been severe contact pressure non-uniformity along the axis of the brush and between the adjacent projections on the brush's surface. These results should be considered when developing post CMP cleaning stage or designing the PVA brush.

By employing a photo-sensitive PVA as a photoresist, we first demonstrated simultaneous patterning and passivation of P3HT active layer. The passivation layers were obtained by annealing the organic layers after developing PVA and over-etching the P3HT layer. The fabricated OTFTs were electrically characterized. The OTFTs after the passivation exhibited the field-effect of ${\sim}5.9{\times}10^{-4}cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, on/off current ratio of ${\sim}10^3$. The value of OTFTs a little degradation with time in air but it appeared different unpassivated OTFT.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effectiveness of experimental 2.26% fluoride-polyvinyl alcohol (F-PVA) tape in inhibition of enamel demineralization using enamel surface microhardness (SMH) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination. Enamel specimens (n=60) randomly assigned to four groups: control group, F-PVA tape group, fluoride varinish (F-varnish) group, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACFP) group. After topical application, pH-cycling was processed. Then, SMH was measured and the percentage loss of surface microhardness (%SML) was calculated. For the SEM examination, five sample specimens in each group were treated and the morphologic character was evaluated. After pH-cycling, the SMH values of the enamel specimens of F-PVA tape and F-varnish group were significantly higher than that of CPP-ACFP group, there was no significant difference between F-PVA tape and Fvarnish group. With SEM examination, enamel surfaces in the F-PVA tape group and F-varnish group showed numerous spherical and ovoid crystals formed on the enamel surface were also observed. The density of crystals was higher than that of both control group and CPP-ACFP group. F-PVA tape is effective in inhibition of enamel demineralization. Also, F-PVA tape's inhibition of enamel demineralization is comparable to that of F-vanish and greater than that of CPP-ACFP.
The main objective of this study is to prepare the bionanocomposite films using mungbean starch (MBS), PVA, ZnS, and plasticizers, and to evaluate the physical properties, thermal stability, and photocatalytic activity. The bionanocomposite films were cross-linked by heat-curing process. The ZnS and bionanocomposite films were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and SEM. The results indicated that the mechanical properties and water resistance enhanced up to 1.2-1.5 times by the addition of nano-ZnS particles, and the thermal stability was improved by the addition of nano-ZnS particles. The photocatalytic activity of the bionanocomposite films added nano-ZnS particles was examined using bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl orange (MO). In addition, the photodegradation efficiency of BPA and MO was evaluated using the pseudo-first order kinetic model (PFOK).
The crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) mwmbranes with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA-MA) were used to measure the water vapor and air permeabilities at 25 and $35^{\circ}C$. In addition, the contact angles of crosslinked PVA membranes were observed and increased with PSSA-MA contents. The water vapor permeability of 15300 Baller (1 Baller=$10^{-10}cm^3(STP){\cdot}cm/cm^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}cmHg$) was shown the maximum value at $35^{\circ}C$ when PSSA-MA=7 wt% membrane was used. The gas permeability of 146 Barrer was indicated the maximum at PSSA-MA=7 wt% at $35^{\circ}C$ and $P(H_2O)/P(Air)$ was the highest value 109.2 at $25^{\circ}C$.
Pervaporation separation for water-ethanol mixtures has been carried out using crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA_MA) and at which tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was introduced. The concentration of PSSA_MA was fixed 7 wt% over PVA and the TEOS contents, 3, 5, and 7 wt%, were varied against PVA. The composition of the feed mixtures were 10, 20, 30 and 50 wt% of water in it. PVA/PSSA_MA/5 wt% TEOS membrane showed the separation factor, 1730 and the permeability, $16.3g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ for water : ethanol = 10 : 90 at $50^{\circ}C$.
