Modeling of Mechanical Properties of Concrete Mixed with Expansive Additive

  • This study modeled the compressive strength and elastic modulus of hardened cement that had been treated with an expansive additive to reduce shrinkage, in order to determine the mechanical properties of the material. In hardened cement paste with an expansive additive, hydrates are generated as a result of the hydration between the cement and expansive additive. These hydrates then fill up the pores in the hardened cement. Consequently, a dense, compact structure is formed through the contact between the particles of the expansive additive and the cement, which leads to the manifestation of the strength and elastic modulus. Hence, in this study, the compressive strength and elastic modulus were modeled based on the concept of the mutual contact area of the particles, taking into consideration the extent of the cohesion between particles and the structure formation by the particles. The compressive strength of the material was modeled by considering the relationship between the porosity and the distributional probability of the weakest points, i.e., points that could lead to fracture, in the continuum. The approach used for modeling the elastic modulus considered the pore structure between the particles, which are responsible for transmitting the tensile force, along with the state of compaction of the hydration products, as described by the coefficient of the effective radius. The results of an experimental verification of the model showed that the values predicted by the model correlated closely with the experimental values.

  • Life prediction and residual life prediction of structures of machines are one of the most strongly world wide needed problems as requirement in the stage of slowly developing economy which comes after rapidly and highly developing stage. For the purpose of statistical life prediction, fatigue test was conducted under the 4 stress levels, and for each stress level, about 20 specimens are used. The statistical properties of crack growth parameter m and C in the fatigue crack growth law of da/dN=C(.DELTA.K)sup m/, and the relationship between m and C, and the statistical distribution pattern of fatigue crack growth rate can be obtained by experimental results.

  • This paper presents a new scheme of neural network controller to improve to improve the robustuous of robot manipulator using digital signal processors. Digital processors, DSPs, are micro-processors that are particularly developed for fast numerical computations involving sums and products of variables. Digital version of most advanced control algorithms can be defined as sums and producrs of measured variables, thus it can be programmed and executed through DSPs. In addition, DSPs are as fist in computation as most 32-bit micro-processors and yet at a fraction of their prices. These features make DSPs a viable computational tool in digital implementation of sophisticated controllers. During past decade it was proposed the well-established theorys for the adaptive control of linear systems, but there exits relativly little gensral theoral for the adaptive control of nonlinear systems. Perforating of the proposed controller is illustrated. This paper describes a new approach to the design of adaptive controller and implementation of real-time control for assembling robotic manipulator using digital signal processor.   • Human-induced initiating events, also called Category B actions in human reliability analysis, are operator actions that may lead directly to initiating events. Most conventional probabilistic safety analyses typically assume that the frequency of initiating events also includes the probability of human-induced initiating events. However, some regulatory documents require Category B actions to be specifically analyzed and quantified in probabilistic safety analysis. An explicit modeling of Category B actions could also potentially lead to important insights into human performance in terms of safety. However, there is no standard procedure to identify Category B actions. This paper describes a systematic procedure to identify Category B actions for low power and shutdown conditions. The procedure includes several steps to determine operator actions that may lead to initiating events in the low power and shutdown stages. These steps are the selection of initiating events, the selection of systems or components, the screening of unlikely operating actions, and the quantification of initiating events. The procedure also provides the detailed instruction for each step, such as operator's action, information required, screening rules, and the outputs. Finally, the applicability of the suggested approach is also investigated by application to a plant example.

  • Multi-pass shape rolling is performed to produce long products of arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. In the past, the multi-pass shape rolling process has been designed by the trial and error method or the experience of experts based on the empirical approach. Particularly, the design of roll caliber in shape rolling is important to improve product quality and dimensional accuracy. In this paper, the caliber design and pass schedule of multi-pass shape rolling were proposed for manufacturing piston ring wire. In order to design roll caliber, major shape parameter and dimension was determined by analysis of various caliber design. FE-simulation was conducted to verify effectiveness of proposed process design. At first, forming simulation was performed to predict shape of the product. Then, fracture of the wire was evaluated by critical damage value using normalized Cockcroft-Latham criteria. The experiment was carried out and the results are within the allowable tolerance.

  • Recently the interval estimation of a binomial proportion is revisited in various literatures. This is mainly due to the erratic behavior of the coverage probability of the will-known Wald confidence interval. Various alternatives have been proposed. Among them, Agresti-Coull confidence interval has been recommended by Brown et al. (2001) with other confidence intervals for large sample, say n $\ge$ 40. On the other hand, a noninformative Bayesian approach called Polya posterior often produces statistics with good frequentist's properties. In this note, an interval estimator is developed using weighted Polya posterior. The resulting interval estimator is essentially the Agresti-Coull confidence interval with some improved features. It is shown that the weighted Polys posterior produce an effective interval estimator for small sample size and a severely skewed binomial distribution.

Factors Affecting Mental Health among College Students - Sassang Constitution and Ego State centered Approach- (대학생의 정신건강에 영향을 주는 요인 - 사상체질과 자아상태를 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to address differences between mental health according to sasang constitution and ego state among college students. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional study were collected by administration of questionnaires eliciting Woo's ego state scale, QSCC II for the sasang constitution classification, and SCL-90-R for mental health to 393 college students. Analysis was performed using IBM SPSS (version 19.0). Results: The Free Child ego and Adapted Child ego differed significantly among sasang types. The ego-gram pattern of So-eum type exhibited the N pattern (Nurturing Parent (NP)>Adapted Child (AC)>Adult (A)>Free Child (FC)>Critical Parent (CP), AC-high type), however, the ego-gram pattern of other constitution types showed the M pattern (NP>FC>A>AC>CP). No statistically significant differences in mental health were observed among sasang types, however, among ego states, AC and CP showed negative correlation with mental health status. Between So-eum type and So-yang type, AC was the factor predicting mental health. Between Tae-eum type and undefined type, AC and CP were factors predicting mental health. Conclusion: These findings suggest that sasang constitution could be an important factor in understanding the ego state and mental health status. We conclude that sasang constitution should be considered in interpretation of mental health status presentation in clients.

An Approach to Ergonomics Evaluation of Grip Strength - Case by the Manual Lifting - (악력의 인간공학적 평가를 위한 접근 방법 -들기 작업 자세의 경우-)

  • Manual lifting techniques are commonly defined in terms of the postures adopted at the start of the lift. Quantitative definition is problematic, however, because the absolute joint angles adopted to lift an object are influenced by task parameters, such as the initial height of the load. The main objective of this study is to investigate the grip strength of the both hands at the initial lifting points. The survey is conducted by measuring the compression force, anthropometric data and grip strength at the lifting postures for the subjects(n=50) who is assigned to their job as usual. The experiment is peformed at the four lifting postures which involving the combination of two horizontal factors(H1 : 35 cm, H2 : 55 cm) and two vertical factors(V1 : 20~80 cm, V2 : 47~102 cm). The analysis result of lifting posture indicated that each H1-V1, H2-V1 combinations are about 60$^{\circ}$ and each H1-V2, H2-V2 combinations are about $30^{\circ}$. There are significant differences on grip strength between $60^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ stooped posture. The results of this study can be provided a method defining lifting postures at the minimum grip strength. Also, it is eliminated a hazard of the injuries which are cumulative trauma disorders(CTDs) and back pain, increased a productivity and improved a welfare of workers.

Aluminum and E-glass epoxy plates behavior subjected to shock loading

  • The terrorist attacks and dangers by bomb blast have turned into an emerging issue throughout the world and the protection of the people and structures against terrorist acts depends on the prediction of the response of structures under blast and shock load. In this paper, behavior of aluminum and unidirectionally reinforced E-Glass Epoxy composite plates with and without focal circular holes subjected to shock loading has been identified. For isotropic and orthotropic plates (with and without holes) the classical normal mode approach has been utilized as a part of the processing of theoretical results. To obtain the accurate results, convergence of the results was considered and a number of modes were selected for plate with and without hole individually. Using a shock tube as a loading device, tests have been conducted to composite plates to verify the theoretical results. Moreover, peak dynamic strains, investigated by experiments are also compared with the theoretical values and deviation of the results are discussed accordingly. The strain-time histories are likewise indicated for a specific gauge area for aluminum and composite plates. Comparison of dynamic-amplification factors between the isotropic and the orthotropic plates with and without hole has been discussed.

Instability analysis of viscoelastic CNTs surrounded by a thermo-elastic foundation

  • Static and dynamic instability of a viscoelastic carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded on a thermo-elastic foundation are investigated, in this research. The CNT is modeled based on Euler-Bernoulli beam (EBB) and nonlocal small scale elasticity theory is utilized to analyze the structure. Governing equations of the system are derived using Hamilton's principle and differential quadrature (DQ) method is applied to solve the partial differential equations. The effects of variable axial load and diverse boundary conditions on static/vibration instability are studied. To verify the result of the DQ method, the Galerkin weighted residual approach is used for the instability analysis. It is observed appropriate agreement for results of two different solution methods and satisfactory accuracy with those obtained in prior studies. The results of this work could be useful for engineers and designers in order to produce and design nano/micro structures in thermo-elastic medium.
