The Preparation of Glass Beads (Glass beads 제조에 관하여)

  • We produced the glass beads using a spherical vessel which is rotable with the mix ture of releasing agent and glass powder in a electric furnace (apparatus 1), a tubing apparatus of electric furnace which can be gravitated a cullet (apparatus 2) and a tubing apparatus which is dispersible glass powders with the flame of propane gas (apparatus 3). The substrates which are Korean sodium silicates glass 1, 2, boro silicates glass and lead silicates glass are used and the size of cullets is 60-300 mesh. In the results of experimental apparatus, the preferable temperature of apparatus 1 is 880$^{\circ}C$, apparatus 2 is 980$^{\circ}C$ and apparatus 3 is 1100$^{\circ}C$. However, the method of apparatus 3 is more effective than the methods of apparatus 1 and 2 in view of treating time and rate of adhesion.

  • Glass viscosity effects on the electrical properties and microstructure of RuO2 based thick film resistors (TFR) using alumina modified lead borosilicate glasses were studied. AT 85$0^{\circ}C$, the glass viscosities were increased from 4.24Pa.s to 51.5Pa.s when the alumina was added from none to 14 weight percent to the standard glass of 63% PbO, 25% B2O3 and 12% SiO2. The resistivities of resistors were generally decreased and the microstructure development was retarded as the viscosity of the glass increased. This is contrary to the generally accepted thought that the low resistivity is due to fast microstructure development kinetics in TFR. Even though the glass viscosity retards the microstructure development kinetics, the overall network formations are favored for higher viscosity of glass, such that the sheet resistivities were decreased as the glass viscosity increased.

  • 저온 동시소성용 glass-ceramics의 소결 경향성 연구를 위해 lead-borosilicate계 glass를 frit화하여 알루미나분말과 $TiO_2$분말을 $10{\sim}50\;vol%$로 각각 혼합한 후 여러 온도에서 소결하여 소결과 유전 특성을 조사하였다. 그 결과 glass의 연화온도(Ts)가 낮을수록 최대 치밀화 온도가 낮았으며, 반면에 소결밀도는 Ts가 높을수록 높았는데, 이는 glass-ceramicss에서의 결정화도와 관계하였다. 본 연구를 통해 glass-ceramic에서의 소결특성은 glass와 ceramic의 반응성에 의한 2상 석출 정도에 큰 영향을 받음을 알 수 있었으며, ceramic filler로서 알루미나와 $TiO_2$를 이용하여 $900^{\circ}C$에서 소성이 가능하였다. 알루미나의 경우 유전특성$({\epsilon}r=8.5,\;Q{\times}fo=6000)$이 기판용 저유전율 재료로 사용이 가능하였고, $TiO_2$의 경우도 유전특성($({\epsilon}r=17,\;Q{\times}fo=4000)$)이 필터용 고유전율 재료로 사용 가능하도록 높게 나타났다.

  • CdS doped SiO2 glass coating films which are good candidates for the nonlinear optical materials were prepared by the Sol-Gel method. TEOS, C2H5OH, H2O and HCl were used as starting materials to obtain SiO2 matrix solutions. Then Cd(NO3)2.2H2O and CS(NH2)2 were dissolved into the SiO2 matrix solutions. Coating was performed several times in order to increase the thickness of coated film by the dip-coating method. Then heat treatments were carried out to control the size of CdS microcrystals doped in SiO2 glass matrix with respect to temperatures and times. CdS-doped SiO2 transparent coating films were successfully obtained. CdS crystals were changed from cubic to hexagonal type about $600^{\circ}C$.

  • 이동통신 시스템의 소형화 경량화 다기능화 추세에 따라 세라믹 모듈의 정밀도 및 집적도가 중요한 요소로 부각되고 있다. 이러한 모듈의 고집적화 추세에 대응하기 위하여 세라믹 소성시 수축율 제어가 필수적인 요소로 부각되고 있으며, 이에 따라 X, Y축의 소성 수축율을 0에 근접하게 제어하는 무수축 소성 기술이 요구되고 있다. 선행연구를 통하여 $Al_2O_3$/Glass/$Al_2O_3$ 구조의 glass infiltration법에 의한 무수축 소성 기술 구현 가능성을 확인하였으나, 아직 해결해야 할 문제점들이 있다. glass가 $Al_2O_3$층으로 infiltration되는 과정에서 glass층이 de-lamination 되는 결함이 발견되었으며 이는 유전체 기판의 Q값을 낮추고 기판의 신뢰성에 악영향을 줄 수 있어 이에 대한 개선이 필요한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 $Al_2O_3$/Glass/$Al_2O_3$ 구조의 glass infiltration법에 의한 선행 실험에서 관찰된 기판 내부의 de-lamination 현상에 대한 원인을 규명하고 해결책을 제시하고자 하였다. glass 유동과 바인더 burn-out이 동시에 진행됨에 따라 기공이 생성되며 glass가 점성유동함에 따라 이 기공이 glass층으로 모이게 되어 de-lamination 현상이 발생하는 것으로 사료된다. 이를 해결하기 위하여 de-lamination층에 $Al_2O_3$의 tamping을 시도하여 glass층의 기공이 빠져 나갈 수 있는 channel 을 형성하고, 남아있는 기공을 $Al_2O_3$로 채우는 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이에 따라 기판의 밀도와 Quality factor 값이 향상되었으며 미세구조가 치밀한 무수축 기판을 제작할 수 있었다.

Nanostructure of Optical Materials Doped with Rare-Earths: X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy of Dy-Doped Ge-As-S Glass (희토류 첨가 광소재의 나노구조 : Dy 첨가 Ge-As-S 유리의 X-선 흡수 스펙트럼 분석)

  • Dy $L_3$-edge XANES and EXAFS spectra of chalcogenide Ge-As-S glass doped with ca. 0.2 wt% dysprosium have been investigated along with some reference Dy-containing crystals. Amplitude of the white-line peak in XANES spectrum of the glass sample turns out to be stronger than that of other reference crystals, i.e., $DY_2S_3,\;Dy_2O_3\;and\;DyBr_3$. It has been verified from the Dy $L_3$-edge EXAFS spectra that a central Dy atom is surrounded by $6.7{\pm}0.5$ sulfur atoms in its first coordination shell in the Ge-As-S glass, which is relatively smaller than 7.5 of the $Dy_2S_3$ crystal. Averaged Dy-S inter-atomic-distance of the glass ($2.78{\pm}0.01{\AA}$) also turns out to be somewhat shorter than that of the $Dy_2S_3$ crystal ($2.82{\pm}0.01{\AA}$). Such nanostructural changes occurring at Dy atoms imply there being stronger covalency of Dy-S chemical bonds in the Ge-As-S glass than in the crystal counterpart. The enhanced covalency in the nanostructural environment of $Dy^{3+}$ ions inside the glass would then be responsible for optical characteristics of the $4f{\leftrightarrow}4f$ transitions of the dopants, i.e., increase of oscillator strengths and spontaneous radiative transition probabilities.

  • For the damage tolerance improvement of conventional laminated composites, stitching process have been utilized for providing through-thickness reinforcements. 2D preforms were stacked with S-2 glass plain weave and S-2 glass MWK (Multi-axial Warp Knit) L type. 3D preforms were fabricated using the stitching process. All composite samples were fabricated by RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) process. To examine the damage resistance performance the low speed drop weight impact test has been carried out. For the assessment of damage after the impact loading, specimens were examined by scanning image. CAI (Compressive After Impact) tests were also conducted to evaluate residual compressive strength. Compared with 2D composites, the damage area of 3D composites was reduced by 20-30% and the CAI strength showed 5-10% improvement.

Glass Property Models, Constraints, and Formulation Approaches for Vitrification of High-Level Nuclear Wastes at the US Hanford Site

  • Current plans for legacy nuclear wastes stored in underground tanks at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in Washington are that they will be separated into high-level waste and low-activity waste fractions that will be vitrified separately. Formulating optimized glass compositions that maximize the waste loading in glass is critical for successful and economical treatment and immobilization of these nuclear wastes. Glass property-composition models have been developed and applied to formulate glass compositions for various objectives for the past several decades. Property models with associated uncertainties combined with composition and property constraints have been used to develop preliminary glass formulation algorithms designed for vitrification process control and waste-form qualification at the planned waste vitrification plant. This paper provides an overview of the current status of glass property-composition models, constraints applicable to Hanford waste vitrification, and glass formulation approaches that have been developed for vitrification of hazardous and highly radioactive wastes stored at the Hanford Site.

Low Firing Temperature Nano-glass for Multilayer Chip Inductors (칩인덕터용 저온소성 Nano-glass 연구)

  • [ $ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Al_2O_3-B_2O_3-SiO_2$ ] nano-glass has been prepared by sol-gel method. The mean particle size was 60.3 nm with narrow size distribution. The nano-galss has been used as a sintering aid for the densification of the NiZnCu ferrites. The ferrite was sintered with nano-glass sintering aids at $840{\sim}900^{\circ}C$, 2 h and the initial permeability, quality factor, density, and saturation magnetization were also measured. The initial permeability of 0.5 wt% nano-glass added toroidal sample for NiZnCu ferrites sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ was 193.3 at 1 MHz. The initial permeability and saturation magnetization were increased with increasing annealing temperature. As a result, $ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Al_2O_3-B_2O_3-SiO_2$ nano-glass systems were found to be useful as sintering aids for multilayer chip inductors.

The Effects of pH and Buffer Materials on the Leaching of Simulated Waste Glass

  • Effects of pH, bentonite and Portland cement on the leaching of the simulated waste glass were investigated. The simulated waste glass showed the low leach rate in the neutral pH region, while the leach rate in both acidic and alkaline regions increased. Addition of bentonite to the leachant enhanced the leaching of the waste glass. When the waste glass was leached at 72$^{\circ}C$ for 36 days in the ground water with gel state Na-bentonite, approximately 2.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of the surface was corroded out and the large amount of Ti, Nd, and Zr was observed on the surface. The amount of B leached from the simulated waste glass in the presence of domestic bentonite was about three times higher than that in the presence of Aldrich bentonite as well as Portland cement.
