  • The diffusion of innovation theory provided the basis for a model of agricultural development that the extension service continues to use today. This study aims to examine the history, influence, and impacts of innovation diffusion theory on the extension service. It reviews some of the major developments in the literature related to the theory, examines its criticisms, and discusses the implications for extension. As such, innovators are younger, more cosmopolitan, have higher incomes than later adopters, and have the largest operations of all adopter categories. There are two critiques on diffusion of innovation theory in which are the method and inequity recurring from diffusion.

  • In the development of policies and projects for regional development, consolidating region's organization and organizational leadership that could establish and operate voluntary developmental plans along with active participations by regional people are important. There have been successful cases of regional agricultural products emphasizing regional characteristics by strengthening functions and autonomy of the local government based on the premise of increasing mealable relationship among local industries and maximizing the characteristics of local resources and local resource utilization. However, effective pursuing is difficult due to lack of organization and leadership. Centering around local units with their importance recognized playing the core role in the development of rural areas, other important issues are activating civic organizations essential for local development based on town units and agricultural amenity resources in rural areas by seeking methods of rearing organizational leadership, improving rural incomes by strengthening local competitiveness through environmentally-friendly agricultural products based on local units, and developing and activating farm experience related with green tour. The types of organization and leaders are analyzed by investigating approved cases of farm experience. According to the results of the analysis, we seek the methods of promoting organizations and leaders for promoting farm experiences in villages and methods of constructing support organizations for promoting farm experience centering around local government units (such as city, Kun, Eup, Myun and village).

  • In this study, the actual states and cases utilizing lake dykes were investigated focusing on large-scale reclamation project in domestic and instances in advanced foreign countries. The attitudes investigation concerning lake dykes utilization was performed to residents in-and-around Saemangeum. According to the research result, in domestic the utilization of lake dyke have not attracted attention because maximizing land use, which was the primary purpose of reclamation project at the early stage, has been emphasized so far. The advanced foreign countries, however, not only make use of farmland, but also develop activities employing lake dykes. According to the result of an analysis for local residents' attitudes, they want to be used Saemangeum lake dykes as a multifunctionality facilities performing a role of environment friendly equipment as well as a breakwater. They also require further investigation and to be introduced new system far utilizing as a multifunctionality facilities. Recently, green tourism is getting attention more and more owing to laying stress on balanced development of country and improvement on life quality of rural residents and launching five days in duty. It is believed that on this favorable trend lake dykes an be employed as a primary tourism resource if its utilization is developed actively.

  • Most countries recognize traditional knowledge as an economical resource in recent years, and so are actively participating in WIPO discussions for making sure of their intellectual property rights. In this study, the definition of traditional knowledge was discussed for making clear its categories and relative subjects. A tool for Korean Traditional Knowledge Resource Classification(KTKRC) was developed for putting the data of the resources in order, and was indispensable for searching for and examining cultural artifacts within the system of international intellectual property rights. KTKRC covers comprehensively our various traditional knowledge resources and has a similar structure to IPC for international searching, examining, and information exchange. KTKRC consists of a section of traditional knowledge(A), and three subsections: production technology(A0), living technology(A2) and creative technology(A4). The subsections include 8 classes, 28 subclasses, 105 groups, and a great number of subgroups.

  • The root of Astragalus membranaceus is a traditional folk medicine that has been used for many therapeutic purposes in Asia. It reportedly acts as an immunostimulant, tonic, hepatoprotective, diuretic, antidiabetic, analgesic, expectorant, sedative, and anticancer drug. In this study, metabolomic profiling was applied to the roots of A. membranaceus of different ages using NMR coupled with two multivariate statistical analysis methods: such as principal components analysis (PCA) and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA). This allowed various metabolites to be assigned in NMR spectra, including $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GABA), aspartic acid, succinic acid, glutamic acid, glutamine, N-acetyl aspartic acid, acetic acid, arginine, alanine, threonine, lactic acid, and valine. The score plot from PCA and also CDA allowed a clear separation between samples according to age.

  • Absorbent Biofilter Systems (ABS), composed of an anaerobic septic tank, a pump chamber and an absorbent biofilter tank, have been found to economically provide rural on-site wastewater treatment. This study was conducted to assess the potential of ABS effluent as an alternative water resource for agricultural and environmental use, with respect to the removal of pathogenic microorganism and their fertilization effect. A pilot scale ABS was used to compare its removal efficiency of pathogens from effluent water. Overall, more than 95 percent of Salmonella and E. coli were removed. This result demonstrates that a significant reduction in the pathogenic microorganism of effluents can occur in ABS, which implies the feasibility for the use of ABS effluent in agriculture and environment, with the provision of a further simple disinfection step, in order to satisfy the WHO guidelines for the microbiological quality in agriculture. In addition, because of the abundant nutritional content of ABS effluent, the substitution effect of fertilizer (N, P and K) in paddy irrigation, i.e. 2/3 for nitrogen, l/3 for phosphorus and 1/5 for potassium would be expected. Based on the experimental data, the ABS effluent could be used as a new alternative water resource for paddy irrigation, as well as for environmental purposes, such as supplying water to ecological parks in rural villages.

  • This study focuses on the relationship between ginseng production per area and meteorological factors. Four areas of major ginseng production are considered in the study. Chungcheongnam-do and Gyengsangbuk-do are selected as the original major production places and Gyeonggi-do and Kangwon-do are selected as the new major places. The meteorological factors applied for study are the average temperature, accumulated precipitation, and integrated sunshine hours. With the data collected across four areas, we used a panel data analysis. From the results of Hausman test, the fixed effects model allowing to control individual area effect is preferable to the random effects model. Based on the results of the fixed effects model, the accumulated precipitation statistically and significantly affect the decreases in ginseng production. Changes in the average temperature negatively affect ginseng production, but the value is not statistically significant. The integrated sunshine positively affect ginseng production, but the value is not statistically significant.
