The objective of this study is to promote alternative plans on the prejudiced and distorted parts in school textbooks in the aspect of multi-functionality of agriculture and rural community. This was done through analysis of the contents in 44 kinds of schoolbooks in Korean language (30 of elementary school, 12 of middle school and 2 of high school). This will lead to promote the understanding about the multi-functionality and form the proper value system related to agriculture and rural community for children and juveniles using schoolbooks. A content analysis which is a research tool to classify all contents of materials containing the properties to become the object of interest in a systematic way, was employed to examine to what extent the contents on agriculture and rural community were reflected in the textbooks for elementary school, middle school and high school. The content analysis was done in two categories, namely; application method and function view. Application method had four types of texts, cases, figures pictures, and activities, while function view emphasized the relevance for the multi-functionality of agriculture and rural community (i.e., function of environment preservation, function of rural scenery and rural traditional culture conservation, function of maintenance and development of local society, and function of food security). The results of application method in elementary school showed that the textbook of the second-year class having a large amount of figures pictures related to agriculture and rural community, had the highest frequency in all six grades. In the function view, the environment preservation function was most abundant among a variety of multi-functionalities. In middle school, the average frequency had shown a rapid decrease. However, the function of environment preservation in the function view and the texts by application method were most frequent. in the first-year class. In high school, however, any mention related to agriculture and rural community was not made, in spite of the fact that the ten parts of textbook contained a lot of contents with a reasonable level. Based on the results of content analysis, findings and recommendations by part in textbooks for elementary school, middle school and high school have been drawn, and several examples for the content development to be included in the textbooks were listed.
This study has intended to elicit the definition of rural landscape, to classify rural landscape type, and to develop the evaluation indicators of rural landscape, meeting the definition through delphi expert survey method. The survey was performed five times for 80 days by 20 experts. The delphi expert survey asked experts as follows: 1) to fill out open-ended questions regarding the definition of rural landscape, and classification of rural landscape types, and evaluation indicators; 2) to provide their own feasibility evaluation regarding the results of the previous answer; and 3) to reevaluate the feasibility of the definition, types, and indicators. Based on the survey results, this study has found the appropriate definition of rural landscape like the comprehensive complex of physical (objective) and nonphysical (subjective) factors characterizing natural and/or artificial scenary of rural village itself Also, this study has developed the evaluation indicators of rural landscape in accordance with space types and landscape units classified. The developed indicators included areal ratio, the degree of green naturality, the building coverage ratio for physical landscape field, and skyline, landscape adjectives, color landscape, semantic scale.
The purpose of this study is to propose a framework to analyse the educational effects and outcome of the boarding middle school established following the merger and abolition of small schools in rural area. According to the decrease in birth rate and reduction of population in rural area, primary schools have brought about many problems for decrease of number of student, and environment of education have became deteriorated. Accordingly, primary schools be required improvement, and it should be altered placement of schools because it change number of student, distance and time of attending school, and formation of school zone are changed by alternating of human and physical environment. Merger and abolition of primary school is inevitable for change of placement standard to primary school and qualitative improvement of environment of education in rural area. This study suggests 1)educational effects and outcome, 2)changes and benefits of student's living conditions, 3)social effects to local community, and 4)economical efficiency analysis as a new framework to evaluate the validity of establishing a school. It sets up a hypothesis that the students, parents and community satisfy the boarding school in rural area, a school record be improved and the abolition of schools have little effect on community. Finally, it emphasizes that in order to success the policy of the merger of small schools and the boarding middle school, it be attributed to the social-cultural environment based on local residents and community and required provision of a variety of utilization plans reflecting local specifics and guarantee of local residents' participation and selection.
This study has intended to evaluate the subjective landscape of rural region using additive integration index calculation model in Seondong region, Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. This study consists of the following three steps. First, this study defmed the rural landscape using survey and developed the estimating equation for rural landscape assessment index. Second, this study set up assessment units and assessment indicators, then estimated mean of representative landscape adjectives in accordance with them through residents-participatory evaluation. Third, this study calculated rural landscape assessment index using additive integration index calculation model, and evaluated subjective landscape of rural region in accordance with space types and landscape fields through mapping methodology. The results of this study can be described as follows: 1) satisfaction level for landscape in accordance with village (urban area and residential area) was very high; 2) satisfaction level was very high in both Ye-Jeon reservoir and Hakwon farm, representative landscape resources of the study area.
The objectives of the study were to. 1) explain the seriousness of environmental problems and the importance of environmental education in rural development , and 2) explore more effective and efficient ways of environmental education for agriculture and rural development in Korea. They can and are willing to pay their money for high quality food, water and a better living environment, as their incomes have been increasing, Agriculture and rural communities may have competitiveness in these aspects. It is irony that environmental concerns makes the possibility of changes in agriculture and rural development in Korea. Environmental education will have an increasingly important role in agriculture and rural development. Environmental problems relate to the human behavior in various aspects. Many environmental problems are mainly rooted to people's ignorance and spending-habits, and lack of technology related to environment. These human behaviors are the focus that environmental education should teach and change. Environmental education has been carried out through various subjects in school education in Korea, but "Environment" in middle school and "Environmental Science" in high school were separated as a regular subject from 1996. Environmental education still has a lot of room for development from a theoretical frame work. Environmental education should be carried out as action-oriented, student-centered programs. Various teaching materials, programs and proper supporting budget should be developed so that environmental education fulfills its necessary role well in agriculture and rural development. A textbook about the environment alone will not guarantee a high quality environmental education.
Community facilities in most rural villages have many problems in the aspect of their size or functions as well as they are generally too superannuated to support diverse community activities; which results in a low degree of inhabitants' satisfaction with community facilities, and inconvenience for using them. Therefore, it may carefully be said that it's time to need the established studies that are necessary with consider to community facilities which can reflect inhabitants' diverse activities. In this study, 5 places which the most common events among the major monthly events of total 25 rural villages were held were selected as the subject place for survey; and then investigated, by means of the participant observation method, the using behavior of inhabitants who used community facilities. Focusing on size, factors, and layout that were being faced by community facilities in most rural villages, This study investigated the number of users, the characteristics of traffic line and behavior, and the using behavior by group; through considering their correlation with the physical setting of community space, it deduced the problems of use; and it proposed the direction of improvement on the basis thereof. Therefore, this study will serve in the future as useful basic materials for designing a rural village's community facilities in consideration of size, factors and layout which can appropriately support inhabitants' community activities.
This study was conducted to investigate the utilization, recognition, and satisfaction of environment-friendly agricultural products (EAPs) in school food services according to the type of foodservice in the Jeonbuk area. Among the 270 school food service providers evaluated, 56.3% of the schools were located in an urban area and 43.7% were in a rural area. About 80% of urban schools used the EAPs for school foodservice, and 89.8% in rural schools (p<.05). The purchase frequency of grain (p<.01), fruits (p<.05), and processed foods (e.g. Tofu) (p<.001) was significantly different between the urban and rural schools. The perception of school dietitians in urban and rural schools between the EAPs and general agricultural products was significantly different (p<.05). The most different fact was 'safety' (p<.001). Most school dietitians has a gut understanding and a lot of confidence about the system of EAPs (p<0.01). The satisfaction score with EAPs was 3.35; in the urban schools it was 3.36 and in the rural schools 3.12 (p<.01). The satisfaction with EAPs in urban and rural schools was significantly different with regard to several factors; these were 'design' (p<.05), 'color' (p<.001), 'fresh' (p<.001), and 'diversity' (p<.01). There are conflicting views between the urban and rural schools for the additional costs brought by using EAPs (p<.01). In conclusion, our central and local governments should change their roles in financially positive ways and reflect the issue to make the policy effective.
For the purpose of finding out the differences between urban and rural primary school children aged from 7 to 12 in their physipue, 1146 (578 boys and 567 girls) urban children and 1378 (693 boys and 635 girls) rural children were obserbed by the author during 2 months period from September, 1968 to October, 1968. Following were the findings obtained from this study. 1. Physique In general, urban children showed superiority than rural children if their physique, There could be seen significant differences in their height, weight and chest-girth specially in the age group of 11 and 12. 2. Physique indices In the physique indices based on the height, the value of urban children showed superiority than rural children in relative weight but in relative chest-girth it was the other way around and there were no significant differences between these two groups in relative sitting height. The Kaup index showed higher value in urban children and the Vervaeck index in the rural children and there were no significant differences between these two groups in the Rohrer's index. 3. Comparing these figures with the Korean Standard Value, urban children showed superiority and rural children showed inferiority. Our children were inferior than the Japanese children in their physiques.
Rural landscape is essential resources to reinvigorate rural tourism and local economy. The objective of this study is to apply the methodology that can assess landscapes of many rural villages based on the data of Rural Amenity Resource Survey. Above all, to make the data of rural amenity resources survey appropriate for landscape assessment, that was reclassified into 4 landscape resource and 12 lower items. Secondly, 4 evaluation standards of rural landscape; weight of landscape resources, weight of lower items, evaluation of lower items as the number, and evaluation of management condition was established by questionnaire survey. Thirdly, the evaluation standards was applied to case study area; Jug-Goc Myeon, Goc-Seong county, Jeollanamdo. Finally, this result was compared with the other result that management condition was not included in, and the villages that were urgent to improve management condition were selected. As a result, water resource and management condition have great effects on the total quality of rural landscape. Therefore, there are many villages that have peat potentials although that indicates low quality of landscape, now.
In the course of modernization and industrialization in Korea, the population in rural area has been substantially decreased, as a greate number of people have moved to urban area. Many elementary schools in rural area were destined to be closed as the number of students for each school have been decreased below proper level. And this tendency seems to be continued for the time being. The purpose of this study is to suggest a policy for the effective utilization of closed elementary schools in rural area. Especially this study is focused on the cases of utilization of closed school as art studio. By analysing the actual cases of utilization of closed school facilities as artists' studios and surveying the responses and opinions of local inhabitants as well as the artists, we hereby suggest and propose a related policy as one of effective means to revitalize distressed rural community.
