  • In order to evaluate the accuracy of the measurement of maximal oxygen intake (MOI), the MOI in seven subjects was determined 3 to 4 times in each individual. Following a 10 minute warm-up on treadmill (4.3 km/hr with 9 degree grade), the subject was asked to run at a speed of 8.73 km/hr on treadmill for a period of 3 minutes at a given grade which was elevated in a step-wise manner from zero to the level of exhaustion. Following a 3 minute run, the subject was allowed to rest for a period of 3 to 5 minutes. During each period of running, several cardio-pulmonary functions were determined and the range of variability for each measurement was computed. The oxygen consumption during the maximal work load was taken as the MOI. The results may be summarized as follows: (1) The minute volume, the oxygen consumption and the heart rate increased linearly until the grade was elevated to 9 degree above which these values were leveled off. (2) The minute volume and the heart rate during maximal exorcise were $87.4{\pm}8.10\;1/min\;and\;187{\pm}3.7$ per minute, respectively. (3) The maximal oxygen intake which corresponds to the oxygen consumption during maximal exercise was averaged to 3.04 1/min. (4) The coefficient of variance for the maximal oxygen intake was 6.32% while the corresponding values for the minute volume and the heart rate during maximal exercise were 5.22 and 2. 14%, respectively.

Theoretical Analysis on Turnover Safety of Train Affected by Wind Pressure (풍압을 받는 철도 차량 전복 안전에 관한 이론 해석)

  • Rolling stocks are often subjected to the effects of natural cross wind or train wind pressure due to the crossing train. These wind pressure cause the falling-off in running stability and turnover problem. It is sometimes reported that trains are blown over by a gust of wind in overseas. So, many countries enact regulations to secure the safety for wind speed. In this study, we analyzed the difference between the regulation for turnover safety of train which was enacted by Ministry of Land. Transport and Maritime Affairs and that based on the multi-body model. In case of multi-body model, it is assumed that the degrees of freedom for carbody and bogie are assigned an independent values respectively. The results show that the latter approach based on multi-body model can access the safety of turnover and replace the computational method which is accessing with lateral force, derailment coefficient and decrement of wheel load.

Exercise Effects on the Atrophy of Denervated Muscles in Rat (흰쥐의 탈신경근 위축에 미치는 운동의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mild-intensity exercise training on the denervated muscle atrophy in the sciatic nerve injured rat. Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats (250~300 g) were randomly assigned into three groups; sham-denervated group (n=8), denervated group (n=8), and denervated-exercised group (n=20). Exercise consisted of treadmill running at 20 m/min speed with 0% grade for 30 min/day. The animals were decapitated at the second and sixth weeks postcrush. Soleus and medial gastrocnemius were immediately excised to be weighed. Type I and II fibers of the muscles were differentiated by m-ATPase (pH 9.4) stain, and fiber diameters were evaluated. The results were as follows: 1) The weight of the soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles showed a tendency to increase in both the denervation-exercised groups compared to the denervated group. 2) In the 2-week denervation-exercised group, type II fiber diameter of soleus and type I fiber diameter of medial gastrocnemius were increased significantly compared to the denervated control group. 3) In the 6-week denervated-exercised group, type I fiber diameter of soleus and type II fiber diameter of medial gastrocnemius were hypertrophied significantly compared to sham-denervated group. The results of this study suggested that treadmill exercise partially prevented denervation atrophy in the soleus and medial gastrocnemius of the rat.

The Relevance Between Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM) and the Spatiotemporal Parameters of Gait in Children With Cerebral Palsy (뇌성마비 아동에서 대동작기능평가(GMFM)와 보행의 시공간적 변수와의 관계)

  • This paper presents the relevance between GMFM and the spatiotemporal parameters of gait in children with cerebral palsy. Twenty-one children ($73.11{\pm}30.06$ months) with cerebral palsy participated in this study. GMFM was performed and spatiotemporal parameters of gait were measured by foot print gait analysis. A correlation analysis was used to investigate the correlation between GMFM scores and spatiotemporal parameters of gait. A linear regression analysis was employed to find how much each gait spatiotemporal parameters could be predicted from GMFM scores. The total GMFM scores was significantly correlated with walking speed, cadence, and stride length. Dimensions D (standing) and E (walking, running, and jumping) were more significantly correlated with gait spatiotemporal parameters than dimensions A (lying and rolling), B (sitting), and C (crawling and kneeling). The GMFM scores were useful for predicting spatiotemporal parameters. However, it is difficult to predict the status of gait development using GMFM scores because GMFM scores and gait spatiotemporal parameters are only measured as quantities not qualities. In the field, it is easily found that many children with cerebral palsy are unable to walk in any way. Consequently, gait analysis cannot be performed in many cases. Therefore, it is more reasonable to investigate the influence of GMFM on spatiotemporal parameters, rather than vice versa.

  • This study presents the effects of micro-geometries on the swimming behavior of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. First, we have measured parameters of single-cell motility including cell speed, run duration time, and tumble angle under two dimensional space. The results are used to calculate motility coefficients in the width of microchannels ranging from 10 to $100{\mu}m$. Since the single-cell motility parameters measured depend on the interaction of flagella with the microchannel wall, the duration time of the running cell in restricted geometries is distinctively different. Therefore, the motility of bacteria is decreased by restricted geometries. This study suggests that microfluidic approach is useful tool for the analysis of bacterial motility under the restricted space and rapid analytical tool.

Exploring the Characteristics of STEAM Program Developed by Docents and its educational impact in the Natural History Museum

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of STEAM program developed and implemented by two docents and its educational impact for the use of natural history museum. Two docents developed this program with the help of science educators who ran five times of workshop during five months. The STEAM program implemented in the natural history museum demonstrated the following characteristics. The exhibitions in museum were reached by visitors only for learning science concepts (S) out of five components in STEAM. The other components, T (technology) and E (engineering), were delivered through lectures in the room, not exhibition hall. M (Mathematics)was achieved by guessing the animal's size, or calculating the walking or running speed with the clue of foot prints. The three phases of STEAM program (presentation of context, creatively design the investigation, and emotional touch) were explicitly implemented but partially successful. Two docents participating in this study responded that they formed new or extended the understandings about STEAM education, but they had the difficulties in implementing STEAM program for various type of visitors. All visitors who participated in this study displayed the favorable responses in educational impact by STEAM program in natural history museum. The heavier emphasis on E and T of STEAM program is recommended through community-based learning. In addition, educator professional program through which docents can bridge theory into practice is suggested for revitalization of STEAM education.

These wind pressure cause the falling-off in running stability and overturn safety. It is sometimes reported that trains are blown over by a gust of wind. So, many countries enact regulations to secure the overturn safety for wind speed. In this study, theoretical equations of overturn safety based on multi-body model are derived and analyzed the difference between the result of the solid model and that of multi-body model. In case of multi-body model, it is assumed that the degrees of freedom for carbody and bogie are assigned an independent values respectively. The results show that the latter approach based on multi-body model can access the overturn safety of train and replace the conventional method by using commercial software which is accessing with decrement of wheel load.

A BJT process is used, and receiving IC running electricity suitable for low voltage and an optical characteristic in minimum 1.8V with a base with two phases is made with one chip. IC of low voltage operates in 1.8V and 3.0V at the same time, and optical link receiving IC is going to be implemented

  • In this Paper, outdoor position estimation system was implemented using GPS (Global Positioning System) and INS (Inertial Navigation System). GPS position information has lots of errors by interference from obstacles and weather, the surrounding environment. To reduce these errors, multiple GPS system is used. Also, the Discrete Wavelet Transforms was applied to INS data for compensation of its error. In this paper, position estimation of the mobile robot in the straight line is conducted by EKF (Extended Kalman Filter). However, curve running position estimation is less accurate than straight line due to phase change in rotation. The curve is recognized through the rate of change in heading angle and the position estimation precision of the initial curve was improved by UPF (Unscented Particle Filter). In the case of UPF, if the number of particle is so many that big memory gets size is needed and processing speed becomes late. So, it only used the position estimation in the initial curve. Thereafter, the position of mobile robot in curve is estimated through switching from UPF to EKF again. Through the experiments, we verify the superiority of the system and make a conclusion.

  • Test research on Infra-Red Thermography(IRT) technique in a supersonic wind tunnel has been conducted. Inadvertent technical difficulties and their solutions associated with the technique in running of the facility were examined. Two flow conditions at Mach number of 3 and 4 were considered. A double compression ramp model, that replicates realistic high-speed vehicle configuration, was used as test model. The present IR data were compared with shadowgraph visualization images and laminar computational fluid dynamics(CFD) results. It has been shown that the IRT technique can be used in quantifying various fluid dynamic features such as flow transition, separation and three-dimensional phenomena around the double compression ramp model.
