A vehicle's differential gear is a device designed to allow the vehicle's outer wheels to turn faster than the inner wheels when turning on a curve. The differential gear case is the main component of the differential gear system, which is composed of ring gear, pinion gear and side gear, and is fastened by pinion shaft pins. The differential gear case rotates when the vehicle is running, so balancing calibration is very important. In this study, a balancing machine that can diagnose and correct the differential gear case and mass imbalance of various rotating bodies was designed. The differential gear case was rotated at high speed to accurately diagnose the location and value of the unbalanced mass, and it was designed to be balanced and corrected by removing the unbalanced mass by drilling. After calibration, it was confirmed that the unbalanced value of all the measured samples was reduced to less than 180g.mm, and the unbalance reduction ratio was improved to 60~70%.
Autonomous cars require the integration of multiple communication systems for driving safety. Many carmakers unveil mirrorless concept cars aiming to replace rear and sideview mirrors in vehicles with camera monitoring systems, which eliminate blind spots and reduce risk. This paper presents optical vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for autonomous mirrorless cars. The flicker-free light emitting diode (LED) light sources, providing illumination and data transmission simultaneously, and a high speed camera are used as transmitters and a receiver in the OCC link, respectively. The rear side vehicle transmits both future action data and vehicle type data using a headlamp or daytime running light, and the front vehicle can receive OCC data from the camera that replaces side mirrors so as not to prevent accidents while driving. Experimental results showed that action and vehicle type information were sent by LED light sources successfully to the front vehicle's camera via the OCC link and proved that OCC-based V2V communications for mirrorless cars can be a viable solution to improve driving safety.
A program based on a 2-D CFD code has been developed to simulate a gas turbine engine. 2-D Navier-Stokes implicit code with $k-\omega$ turbulent model is used in compressor and turbine. Lumped method chemical equilibrium code with 10 species of molecular is applied to combustor with assuming perfect mixture and 100% combustion efficiency at constant pressure state. Fluid properties are shared on interfaces between engine components. Compressor supplies outlet temperature and pressure to combustor. At the same time, combustor also carries temperature and pressure to turbine. The back pressure of compressor outlet is transferred by inlet pressure of turbine. Unsteady phenomena in rotor-stator are covered by mixing-plane method. The running condition of engine can be determined only by given the inlet condition of compressor, the outlet condition of turbine, equivalence ratio and rotating speed.
The dynamic stability of railway vehicle has long been one of the important issues in railway safety. The dynamic simulator has been used as a tool for investigating the dynamic stability of railway vehicles and wheel/rail interfaces. In particular, small scale simulators have been widely used in laboratory studies instead of full scale roller rigs which can be quite costly and rather inconvenient for testing out the effect of diverse design parameters. But techniques for design of a small scale simulator for the fundamental study about the dynamic characteristics of the wheel-rail systems and the bogie systems have not been well developed in Korea. Therefore, a research on the development of a small scale simulator for investigating bogie dynamics needs to be undertaken. The present paper investigates design of a small-scaled derailment simulator and the design of a small scale bogie. The simulator developed can be used to investigate the effect of diverse parameters such as attack angle, wheelbase and cant on dynamic behavior of the bogie and key dynamic performance parameters such as derailment coefficient and critical speed.
Train wheels are the most important part of the high-speed rail system with supporting body, running stably and safely. Wheel exchange and fix plan is computed by the worker who managing entire Train Maintenance Process based on his know-how so that this system is losing its reliability and accuracy. And predicting of the wheel's lifetime is absolutely difficult matter because of uncertainty between trains like mileage of the type of trains, condition of operation, curve section and wheel's cutting pattern. Therefore workers always used to hold many wheels. For this reason, the cost of stock is soar when the level of stock was normal. If the stock is sufficient, the cost of stock will rise. On the other hand, If the stock is deficient, we would have trouble that the plan of the train maintenance process will be failed. Thus this paper aimed at application that "Wheel Managing System" which is able to predict wheel's life-cycle and demands under the RIMS(Rolling-Stock Information Maintenance System) with analysing wheel exchanging and cutting status considering economical or stable aspects.
The demand on a turnout layed on a bridge is rising owing to the increasing number of stations on the viaduct. And also the demand on a turnout with CWR is rising to upgrade running speed of the passing train. A CWR with turnout is subjected to additional axial force induced by the thermal expansion of bridge as well as lead rail of turnout. The additional axial force is closely related with the distance between bridge expansion joint and turnout when it is located near the movable bearing of bridge, and it is required to keep some distance to prevent excessive axial stress in CWR. But, there is no guideline in specification for the proper distance from E.J. to turnout, and it caused problem in planning turnout or bridge. So, it this study, the parametric study to investigate the effect on axial stress in CWR with turnout according to span length and distance between bridge expansion joint and turnout was performed. From the results of numerical analysis, it was found out that $5{\sim}30m$ distance is required to prevent excessive axial in CWR for span length less 90m.

This study investigates the effects of corrosion resistance characteristics of opponent materials in relative motion on the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel. Pin specimens made of mild carbon steel are tested at several sliding speeds against mating discs made of two types of alloyed steels, such as type D2 tool steel (STD11) and type 420 stainless steel (STS420J2), with different corrosion resistance characteristics in a pin-on-disc type sliding wear test machine. The results clearly show that the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the corrosion resistance characteristics of the mating disc materials at low sliding speeds. However, the sliding wear behavior at high sliding speeds is irrelevant to the characteristics because of the rising temperature. During the steady state wear period, the sliding wear rate of mild carbon steel against the type 420 stainless steel at a sliding speed of 0.5 m/s increases considerably unlike against the type D2 tool steel. This may be because the better corrosion resistance characteristics achieve a worse tribochemical reactivity. However, during the running-in wear period at low sliding speeds, the wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the microstructure after heat treatment of the mating disc materials rather than by their corrosion resistance characteristics.
Predicting ship manoeuvrability is attracting widespread interest in the field of analyzing maritime accident to simulate a highly accurate track of a ship in abnormal accident situations. This study investigated the manoeuvrability of a ship in abnormally heeled condition. Free Running Model Tests (FRMT) with 1/65.83 scaled KCS (KRISO container ship) were conducted in three heeled conditions; $35^{\circ}$ turning circle tests and 20/20 zigzag manoeuvring tests were conducted in $0^{\circ}$, $-10^{\circ}$, and $-20^{\circ}$ conditions. The test results showed that the heeled to port condition significantly affected starboard turning and zigzag characteristics; the tactical diameters in the turning circle tests decreased, and the first overshoot angles in the zigzag tests increased when the ship was in the larger heeled condition. These results indicate that the roll angle of the ship considerably affects yaw rate and speed decrease of the ship. The turning and zigzag indices from trajectory and navigation data in the study were provided for benchmark data sets.
