  • To determine the effects of underlayer vegetation on soil properties, the profiles, physical, and chemical properties of soil were investigated upon Fagus multinervis -Rumohra standishii, Fagus multinervis - typical, and Fagus multinervis -Sasa kurilensis subcommunities that was growing at Songinbong area of Ullungdo. There were little differences in soil profile properties among the three subcommunities. Also, there were little differences in physical and chemical properties of soil among the three subcommunities, except exchangeable Ca concentration in 0-10 cm soil depth. However, the soils of the study area in 0-10 cm soil depth comprised high organic matter and total N concentration as in an average value of 21.6% and 0.74%, respectively. Also, the soil showed very low bulk density and pH as in an average value of 0.43 g/㎤ and 4.4 in 0-10 cm soil depth, respectively. Due to the high soil organic matter and total N concentrations and the low bulk density and pH, the soil properties of Songinbong area are different from those of other forest in Korea.

  • The montane forests of Ulreung Island, Korea, were investigated by the ZM school method. By comparing the montane forests of this island with those of Korean Peninsula and of Japan, a new order, F a g e t a l i a m u l t i n e r v i s, a new alliance, F a l g i o n m u l t i n e r v i s, a new association, H e p a t i c o-F a g e t u m m u l t i n e r v i s and Rhododendron brachycarpum-Pinus parviflora community were recognized. The H e p a t i c o - F a g e t u m m u l t i n e r v i s was further subdivided into four subassociations; Subass. of Sasa kurilensis, Subass. of Rumohra standishii, Subass. of Rhododendron brachycarpum and Subass. of typicum. Each community was described in terms of floristic, structural and environmental features.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the vegetation and soil characteristic, and ordination of Wasabia japonica population at Ulleung-Do. The Wasabia japonica population is distributed in altitudes of 440m to 570m at Seo-Myon and also in altitudes of 340m near Nari-valley. In the study sites, soil organic matter, nitrogen, available phosphorous, exchangeable potassium, exchangeable calcium, exchangeable magnesium concentration, cation exchange capacity, and soil pH were 15.01%, 0.48%, 44.19ppm, 2.00(me/100g), 7.19(me/100g), 4.44(me/100g), 22.55(me/100g), and 6.17, respectively. The Rumohra standishii dominant population was mainly found in high in soil nitrogen, organic matter, CEC, and exchangeable calcium concentration in comparison with Boehmeria spicata dominant population. The Boehmeria spicata dominant population was mainly found in high in soil pH.

  • Antioxidative activity and inhibitory activity of angiotensin I converting enzyme(ACE), aminopeptidase N(APN) and $\alpha$-amylase were investigated in the methanol extracts from 25 fern plants native to Jeju Island, in order to screen the plant species containing bioactive materials for functional foods or medicines. The antioxidative activity was higher in Cytomium fortunei(41.9%) and Rumohra standishii(34.1%) than in leaves of Thea sinensis(30.9%), a small tree for antioxidative beverage. Inhibitory activities of ACE and APN were relatively high in Cytomium fortunei as 26.7% and 28.2% respectively. $\alpha$-Amylase inhibitory activity was higher than 50% in 10 species. Particularly, Cytomium fortunei(87.4%) and Dryopteris erythrosora(71.6%) showed the inhibitory activities higher than those of other form plants. Of 25 fern plants investigated here, Cytomium fortunei showed not only the highest antioxidative activity but also the highest inhibitory activity of ACE, APN and $\alpha$-amylase. It suggests that Cytomium fortunei could be potentially used as a resource of bioactive materials for fuctional foods or medicines.

Ecological Studies on the Vegetational Characteristics of the Virgin Forests of Songin-bong in Ulreung Island, Korea (울릉도(鬱陵島) 성인봉일대(聖人蜂一帶) 원시림(原始林)의 군락생태학적(群落生態學的) 연구(硏究))

  • The virgin forests on and around Sungin-bong in Ulreung-do, an island situated between the Korean peninsula and Japanese archipelago, were investigated phytosociologically. They were classified into two communities, i.e. Fagus crenata var. multinervis - Majanthemum dilatatum community and F. crenata var. multinervis - Sasa kuriensis community. The former was subdivided into several units ; Acer takesimense - Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum group, including Tsuga sieboldii - Taxus cuspidata var. tatifolia subgroup and a typical subgroup, and Acer mono var. savatieri - Rumohra standishii group, including Dystaenia takeshimana subgroup and a typical subgroup. The other was subdivided into two subunits ; Acer okamotoanum group and a typical group. It was estimated that this area was orginally covered with beech and maple dominated forest vegetation and with Machilus dominated forest or bamboo forest. However, in these days, The natural vegetation of it has been destroyed and in future, may also be disturbed gradually by human activities. Judging from the coincidence method, the structure and distribution of the forest communities was more related to altitude than to topography. The phytomass, based upon the basal area of each community to $100m^2$ showed that Acer mono var. savatieri - Rumohra standishii group ($BA=7574.1cm^2$, $P=9,882,058cm^3$) haved the largest value and Tsuga sieboldii - Taxus cuspidata var. latifolia subgroup($BA=2126.3cm^2$, $P=1,746,755cm^3$) showed the smallest value. The flora of the vascular plants collected from this area consists of 71 families, 187 genera, 243 species, 1 subspecies, 44 varieties, 6 forms and 294 taxa in total.

  • This research was conducted to investigate morphological and genetic variation of Allium victorialis val. platyphyllum which growed wild in Mt. Hambaek, Mt. Odae, and Ullungdo. The tree layer of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum community in Mt. Hambaek and Mt. Odae was dominated by Quercus mongolica. The tree layer of Ullungdo generally consist of Fagus crenata var. multinervis, Acer triflorum, Sorbus commixta, and Tilia insularis. In the herb layer, Rumohra standishii, Trillium tschonoskii, and Lilium hansonii are common at Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum community in Ullungdo. The vegetation in Ullungdo was widely different from those in Mt. Hambaek and Mt. Odae by species composition. The result of Principal Component Analysis(PCA) and Canonical Discriminent Analysis of by the 8 characters showed that Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum could be classified into 2 groups: (one ; Mt. Hambaek and Mt. Odae, the other ; Ullungdo). In PCA, the major factors in the first principal component group was angle of leaf apex. Variation of band by isozyme GOT(glautamate oxaloaccetate transaminase) is similar between Mt. Hambaek and Mt. Odae. However, Ullungdo differed from Mt. Hambaek and Mt. Odae in variation of bands.
