Evaluation of deproteinized bovine bone mineral as a bone graft substitute;A comparative analysis of basic characteristics of three commercially available bone substitutes (탈단백 우골의 골이식 대체재로서의 특성에 대한 평가;세 종류의 골 대체재의 기본 특성에 대한 비교분석)

  • Bovine bone-derived bone substitutes are widely used for treatment of bone defects in dental and orthopedic regenerative surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the basic characteristics of deproteinized bovine bone mineral as a bone graft substitute. Commercially available products from three different bovine bone minerals-Bio-Oss(GeistlichPharma, Switzerland), BBP(Oscotec. Korea), Osteograf/N-300(Dentsply Friadent Ceramed, USA) - were investigated. They were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDS), surface area analysis(BET), and Kjeldahl protein analysis. Cell viability on different products was evaluated by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay. The results of this study indicated that each bone substitute displayed distinct surface properties. Furthermore, Kjeldahl protein analysis indicated that residual crude proteins are present in deproteinized bovine bone mineral. BBP showed relatively large amount of residual protein, which indicated that the possibility of disease transmission can not be safely ruled out. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that active quality management is strongly needed in operations that involve processing bovine bone tissue for medical use.

A Study on the Extru-Bending Process of the Angle Product with non-Symmetric "ㄱ" Section (비대칭 "ㄱ" 단면 앵글제품의 압출굽힘 가공에 관한 연구)

  • It was investigated that the "ㄱ" type angle product could be bended with a curvature during extrusion by extru-bending process. The bending process for the "ㄱ" type angle product can be developed by the hot metal extru-bending machine with the two punches moving in the different velocity. Because of non-symmetry of product, it is important to design the ruled surface contour of dies cavity for the welding and bending with two billets. So it is designed that the multi-hole container has two non-symmetric holes and non-symmetric contour of dies entrance. The results of the experiment show that "ㄱ" type angle product can be bended by the extrusion process and that the curvature of the product can be controlled by the velocity of punch and that the defects such as the distortion of section and the thickness change of the product and the folding and wrinkling of the product did not happen after the bending processing by the extrusion bending machine.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a multi-functional hotwire cutting system (MHC) using EPS-foam block or plate as the working material. Because the MHC apparatus employs a four-axis synchronized hotwire cutter with the structure of two XY movable heads and a turntable, it allows the easy fabrication of various 3D shapes, such as (1) an axisymmetric shape or a sweeping cross-sectioned pillar shape using the hot-strip in the form of sweeping surface and EPS foam block on the turntable, (2) a polyhedral complex shape using the hotwire and EPS foam block on the turntable, and (3) a ruled surface approximated freeform shape using the hotwire and EPS foam plate. In order to examine the applicability of the developed MHC apparatus, an axisymmetric shape, a polyhedral shape and a large-sized freeform shape were fabricated on the apparatus.

  • Transient kinetics of $NH_3$ adsorption/desorption and of SCR(selective catalytic reduction) of NO with $NH_3$ were studied over vanadium based catalysts, such as $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ and $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$. In the present catalytic reaction process, NO adsorption is neglected while $NH_3$ is strongly chemisorbed on the catalytic surface. Accordingly, it is ruled out the possibility of a reaction between strongly adsorbed $NH_3$ and NO species in line with the hypothesis of an Eley-Rideal mechanism. The present kinetic model assumes; (1) non-activated $NH_3$ adsorption, (2) Temkin-type $NH_3$ coverage dependence of the desorption energy, (3) non-linear dependence of the SCR reaction rate on the $NH_3$ surface coverage. Thus, the surface heterogeneity for adsorption/desorption of $NH_3$ is taken into account in this model. The present study extends the pure chemical kinetic model based on a powdered-phase catalytic system to the chemico-physical one applicable to a realistic monolith reactor.

Relative static and dynamic performances of composite conoidal shell roofs

  • Conoidal shells are doubly curved stiff surfaces which are easy to cast and fabricate due to their singly ruled property. Application of laminated composites in fabrication of conoidal shells reduces gravity forces and mass induced forces compared to the isotropic constructions due to the high strength to weight ratio of the material. These light weight shells are preferred in the industry to cover large column free open spaces. To ensure design reliability under service conditions, detailed knowledge about different behavioral aspects of conoidal shell is necessary. Hence, in this paper, static bending, free and forced vibration responses of composite conoidal shells are studied. Lagrange's equation of motion is used in conjunction with Hamilton's principle to derive governing equations of the shell. A finite element code using eight noded curved quadratic isoparametric elements is developed to get the solutions. Uniformly distributed load for static bending analysis and three different load time histories for solution of forced vibration problems are considered. Eight different stacking sequences of graphite-epoxy composite and two different boundary conditions are taken up in the present study. The study shows that relative performances of different shell combinations in terms of static behaviour cannot provide an idea about how they will relatively behave under dynamic loads and also the fact that the points of occurrence of maximum static and dynamic displacement may not be same on a shell surface.

A Clinical Study on Diagnosis of the patients with Scoliosis by D.I.T.I. (D.I.T.I.를 이용한 척추측만증 진단의 임상적 고찰)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to report that D.I.T.I. can be used for diagnosis of scoliosis. Methods: We measured the posterior trunk surface of the patients with shoulder pain or low back pain. They were ruled out as scoliosis by D.I.T.I. and compared with X-ray finding of T L-spine Ap views and calculated scoliosis angle. Results: In according to the spinoprocess curve in D.I.T.I. we could rule out as scoliosis. Thermal difference of left and right segmental areas of the patients was showed. Scoliosis angle of the patients ranged from $4^{\circ}$ to $11^{\circ}$ in X-ray finding. Conclusions: The results suggest that D.I.T.I. can explain physiologic and functional abnormalities than X-ray, in diagnosis of scoliosis. But further studies are required to for the diagnosis of scoliosis by analysing D.I.T.I..

  • An algorithm and its computer program were developed for the computer aided automatic conversion from 2-D design drawing, which includes arbitrary curves, to a 3-D object, and the 3-D object obtained from the developed program was used to generate the tool path of NC milling machine. The algorithm and its computer program developed were applied to several real objects for their feasibility check and showed satisfactory results. Therefore, it was proved that the algorithm and its program developed can be applied to the CAM for the mechanical parts having arbitraily curved shapes by automatically generating its 3-D object. As a result of this study a basic theory for the integration of CAD/CAM was established which will prompt the improved quality and productivity.

Separation of Silicon and Silica by Liquid-Liquid Extraction

  • The objective of this investigation was to separate silicon and silica for recycling by the liquid-liquid separation technique. In the preparation of silicon (Si) single crystal, a small amount of silicon is fixed on the surface of silica (quartz, $SiO_2$) crucible. The used crucible is crushed for recycling both silicon and silica in a high purity from the mixed powder. Zeta-potential of silicon and silica are almost the same at pH higher than 3. Their separation by simple flotation is ruled out. However, their hydrophobic characteristics are different in several different organic solvent from the measurement of contact angle. Therefore, the liquid-liquid extraction is employed to separate silicon and silica. The result indicates that the organic solvent mixed with dodecyl ammonium acetate could extracted the silicon powder at high purity (97-100%) with high recovery from the silica powder in the water phase.

Manufacturing Techniques and Alloying Compositions of Metal Decorative Artifacts in 18th Century, Myanmar

  • Konbaung Dynasty was the last unified dynasty that ruled Myanmar from 18th to 19th century. During this time Buddhist art flourished in Myanmar due to the interest of the rulers toward their traditional culture. Metal decorative artifacts in the 18th century are classified into structures and Buddha statues. They are further subdivided into gilt-bronze and bronze objects, depending on their material component. Three-dimensional gilt-bronze decorative artifacts were cast with a brass alloy of Cu-Zn-Sn-Pb and their surfaces were gilded with extremely thin gold leaves (less than 1 ㎛ in thickness). The gilded layer approximately comprised 10 wt% silver in addition to the main element, gold. The lack of Hg in the gilded layer, indicated that the amalgam gilding technique was not applied. The analysis results indicated that the lacquered gilding technique was applied to the objects. Bronze decorative artifacts without gilding were cast with materials containing Cu-Sn-Pb. The bronze pavilions and bronze Buddha staues were crafted using the same alloy of high-tin bronze, which approximately contained 20 wt% Sn. No heat treatment was applied to reduce the brittleness of the objects after they were cast with a large amount of Sn. The most significant difference between the gilt-bronze and bronze decorative artifacts lie in their elemental compositions. The gilt-bronze decorative artifacts with their gilded surface were manufactured using brass containing zinc, while the unplated bronze decorative artifacts were composed of bronze containing tin. Artifacts of the same type and size are classified differently depending on the materials utilized in the surface treatment such as gilding.

Initial Clinical Experience with Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy in Signet-Ring Cell Gastric Cancer with Peritoneal Metastase

  • Purpose: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have been shown to improve survival in select patients with gastric cancer and peritoneal metastases. It remains unclear, however, whether this multimodal treatment protocol is also beneficial for signet-ring cell gastric cancer (SRC) patients with peritoneal metastases. Materials and Methods: Clinical data of patients scheduled for upfront systemic chemotherapy consisting of 5-FU (2,600 $mg/m^2$), folinic acid (200 $mg/m^2$), docetaxel (50 $mg/m^2$), and oxaliplatin (85 $mg/m^2$) followed by CRS and HIPEC using cisplatin (50 $mg/m^2$) at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, University Hospital T$\ddot{u}$bingen, Germany were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Eighteen consecutive patients for whom irresectability has been ruled out by a computed tomography scan were enrolled. However, complete cytoreduction could only be achieved in 72% of patients. When categorizing patients with respect to the completeness of cytoreduction, we found no difference between both groups considering tumor- or patient-related factors. The overall complication rate following complete cytoreduction and HIPEC was 46%. Within a median follow-up of 6.6 (0.5~31) months, the median survival for CRS and HIPEC patients was 8.9 months as opposed to 1.1 months for patients where complete cytoreduction could not be achieved. Following complete cytoreduction and HIPEC, progression-free survival was 6.2 months. Conclusions: In SRC with peritoneal metastases, the prognosis appears to remain poor irrespective of complete CRS and HIPEC. Moreover, complete cytoreduction could not be achieved in a considerable percentage of patients. In SRC, CRS and HIPEC should be restricted to highly selective patients in order to avoid exploratory laparotomy.
