  • A linear wind prediction program, WAsP, was employed to predict wind speed at two different sites located in complex terrain in South Korea. The reference data obtained at locations more than 7 kilometers away from the prediction sites were used for prediction. The predictions from the linear model were compared with the measured data at the two prediction sites. Two compensation methods such as a self-prediction error method and a delta ruggedness index (RIX) method were used to improve the wind speed prediction from WAsP and showed a good possibility. The wind speed prediction errors reached within 3.5 % with the self prediction error method, and within 10% with the delta RIX method. The self prediction error method can be used as a compensation method to reduce the wind speed prediction error in WAsP.

  • The optimal seismic retrofitting of NPP(Nuclear Power Plant) cabinet structures that contained class 1 relays were studies in this paper. During earthquake event, the failure modes of relays are not appeared in form of structural failure, but are appeared in form of contact chatter of relay. Therefore, the retrofitting of cabinet has to be aimed to the reducing of the structural response, such as acceleration. In this study, the optimal characteristic values of dampers were searched by μ-GA (micro-Genetic Algorithm) scheme for several installation patterns. To keep accuracy and efficiency of analysis, the structural models of cabinet were considered as a frame structure. The responses of structure were obtained in form of acceleration response spectra derived from the results of nonlinear time history analysis including damping nonlinearity. The fitness function of the optimum procedure was constructed based on the ratio of maximum spectral value and target GERS (General Equipment Ruggedness Spectra). The results show the good improvements of fitness fur adequate retrofitting pattern. Especially, the improvements of fitness were remarkable when the damping exponents are proper.

  • In this paper. we introduce a novel actuation method based on dielectric elastomer. Along with basic principles of actuation using dielectric elastomer a new design of actuator is discussed. The proposed design has advantageous features in reduction in size, speed of response, ease and ruggedness of operation. Using the actuator. a three-degree-of-freedom actuator module is developed, which can provide up-down. and two rotational degree-of-freedom motion. In the application of the proposed actuation method, a micro-robot mimicking the motion of an inchworm is developed.

  • In this study, fatigue tests were performed to examine the effects of micro drill hole on fatigue limit of as cast and austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) using the rotary bending fatigue tester. As results, micro drill holes ($diameter{\leq}0.4mm$) did not influence the fatigue limit of ADI, compared to annealed ductile cast iron; the critical defect size of crack initiation, in ADI was larger than as cast. If the ${\sqrt{area}}$ of micro drill hole and graphite nodule in ADI are comparable, crack initiates at the graphite nodule. When the ruggedness developes through austempering treatment process, microstructure on crack initiation at micro drill hole is tougher than that of as cast ductile cast iron.

  • The single phase induction motor(SPIM) with two windings, main and auxiliary winding, is widely used due to ruggedness, low maintenance and simplicity of construction. There are several ways of starting single phase induction motor. The most common method is to use centrifugal switch that is connected in series with a capacitor. But the centrifugal switch that is the external starting system has many problems. In this paper, we use triac to overcome defects that happen by centrifugal switch, Also we used inductor that connected with main winding to get a gate trigger voltage signal. Experiments are focused on a capacitor starling single phase induction motor.

  • A Switched Reluctance Generator attracts much attention in the generator because of high efficiency, simplicity, and ruggedness. However, they require rotor position information to operate. In many systems, the rotor position sensor is expensive, limited and undesirable. This paper describes a new approach to estimating the rotor position of a SRG from the measured terminal voltage and current for rotor position sensorless control. The proposed method Is based on the instantaneous inductance of the SRG. The proposed technique is very simple and it is able to apply to high speed operation under the stable condition because of its simplicity. The initial rotor position estimation algorithm is efficient and reliable. The proposed method is verified by computer simulation.

  • The switched reluctance motor is an electric machine in which torque is produced by the tendency of its movable part to move to a position where the inductance of the excited winding is maxmized. It is as well as PM brushless do systems. It's many advantages-a wide speed range, and inherently simplicity and ruggedness, low manufacturing cost, make it a vigorous challenger to these drives. It is a fascinating machine with all kinds of interesting application possibilities. In this paper, the design and evaluate the performance is treated.

  • Recently, the elimination of speed sensors has been one of the important requirement in vector control systems, because the speed sensor spoil the ruggedness and simplicity of induction motor. This paper proposes sensorless vector control for high performance of induction motor. The proposed vector control scheme is based on a rotor flux and speed which are calculated from the stator voltage and currents with improved flux estimator. The characteristics of vector control employing stator voltage and current generally deteriorate as the speed gets lower acause the calculated rotor flux depends on the stator resistance and it is difficult to calculate rotor flux at low speed of standstill. This new control system is robust with respect to variations of the stator resistance and it makes possible to calculated rotor flux at low speed of standstill. These feature are verified by the simulation results.

  • An 1.2[kw] SRM for a pallet truck drive is developed and tested. The drive system has to operate with low voltage and high current. and has to have the characteristics of DC series motor. The small size, ruggedness, high efficiency make it possible to replace with DC motor. Test results show that pallet truck with SRM has better characteristics than that of the DC motor performance.
