  • The presence of saponin, terpenoid, steroid, anthraquinone and flavonoid were screened with the usual test methods in forty five(sixty four parts) Korean plants belonging to Urticaceae, Celastraceae, Rhamnaceae, Sterculiceae and Rubiaceae. Plants were extracted with methanol and fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol. Each fraction was tested for the components. The result showed that in saponin test, 21 plants were positive and 11 plants were weak positive; in terpenoid and steroid test, 26 plants were strong positive; in anthraquinone test, 20 plants strong positive; in flavonoid test, 31 plants were positive and 9 plants were weak positive.

Iridoid Compounds from the Whole Plant of Galium verum var. asiaticum

  • One new iridoid glycoside, 10-p-dihydrocoumaroyl-6-${\alpha}$-hydroxygeniposide (1), and six known iridoid glycoside derivatives, 10-p-dihydrocoumaroyl deacetylasperuloside (2), asperulosidic acid methylester (3), asperuloside (4), asperulosidic acid (5), deacetylasperuloside (6), and scandoside (7) were isolated from the methanolic extract of the whole plant of Galium verum var. asiaticum Nakai (Rubiaceae) through repeated column chromatography. Their chemical structures were characterized by spectroscopic analysis. This is the first report of the characterization of compounds 1 - 7 from this plant.

  • Nine iridoid glycoside derivatives were elucidated from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Galium spurium (Rubiaceae) through repeated column chromatography. Their chemical structures were characterized as 10-O-trans-p-coumaroylscandoside (1a), 10-O-cis-p-coumaroylscandoside (1b), 10-O-trans-p-coumaroyl-10-O-deacetyldaphylloside (2), 10-O-cis-p-coumaroyl-10-O-deacetyldaphylloside (3), asperulic acid methylester (4), asperuloside (5), asperulosidic acid (6), scandoside (7), and deacetyl asperulosidic acid (8) by spectroscopic analysis. This is the first report of the characterization of compounds 1a, 1b, 2, 3 and 7 from this plant.

  • Ixora auricularis (Rubiaceae), previously recognized as endemic to Yunnan (China), was reported in Vietnam. This plant differs from the closely related species Ixora coccinea in its auriculate shape of the base leaf, greater number of secondary veins, shorter stipules, calyx having more appendices, shorter corolla tube, and the oblanceolata shape of the corolla tip. Detailed information about its description as well as illustrations, color photographs and a species key of related species of Ixora in Vietnam are provided.

  • An unrecorded species of Oldenlandia brachypoda DC. is newly reported from Seogwipo-si, Jejudo, This species is distinguished from Oldenlandia diffusa, the related taxa by the surface and length of the pedicel, the number of flowerd, the shape of the calyx and capsule. The new Korean name 'je-ju-baeg-un-pul', was given considering the collect locality. The illustration, description and key of characters are provided.

Superoxide Quenching Activity of Phenolic Compounds from the Whole Plant of Galium verum var. asiaticum

  • During the process of screening for antioxidative effects of natural plants in Korea, by measuring the superoxide quenching activity, methanol extract of the whole plant, Galium verum var. asiaticum (Rubiaceae), was found to show potent antioxidant activity. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation of methanol extract of Galium verum var. asiaticum led to the isolation of five phenolic compounds. Using spectroscopic techniques, the chemical structures were elucidated as: caffeic acid (1), narcissin (2), rutin (3), luteolin-7-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1 ${\rightarrow}$ 2)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (4), and luteolin-7-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (5). These compounds were isolated for the first time from this plant. Among them, compound 1 showed the most significant riboflavin-originated superoxide and xanthine-originated superoxide quenching activities. Compounds 3 and 4 exhibited mild superoxide quenching effects compared with vitamine C.

Screening of the Alkaloids in Korean Plants (국내 자생 식물의 알칼로이드 검색)

  • The alkaloids of thirty five Korean plants which belong to Rhamnaceae, Sterculiaceae, Celastracea, Urticaceae and Rubiaceae were screened. Plant was extracted and solvent fractionated to yield ether soluble alkaloidal fraction and butanol soluble fraction. Each fraction was subjected to alkaloidal test by Dragendorff's reaction. The result showed eighteen plants strong positive, fourteen weak and six negative to alkaloidal test.

A new record of Galium bungei var. miltorrhizum (Hance) Jeong & Pak (Rubiaceae) in Korea

  • We reported an unrecorded plant species, Galium bungei var. miltorrhizum (Hance) Jeong & Pak in Korea. This species is found in Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeollabuk-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do. G. bungei var. miltorrhizum is distinguished from related taxa by glabrous stem and glabrous or rarely short papillate mericarps. This taxon was named 'Dung-geun-ne-ip-gal-kwi' in Korean based on shapes of leaves. We provided a description, illustrations, photographs, and a key of related taxa in Korea. And we propose a new combination (Galium bungei var. miltorrhizum).
