Computational modelling for description of rubber-like materials with permanent deformation under cyclic loading

  • When carbon-filled rubber specimens are subjected to cyclic loading, they do not return to their initial state after loading and subsequent unloading, but exhibit a residual strain or permanent deformation. We propose a specific form of the pseudo-elastic energy function to represent cyclic loading for incompressible, isotropic materials with stress softening and residual strain. The essence of the pseudo-elasticity theory is that material behaviour in the primary loading path is described by a common elastic strain energy function, and in unloading, reloading or secondary unloading paths by a different strain energy function. The switch between strain energy functions is controlled by the incorporation of a damage variable into the strain energy function. An extra term is added to describe the permanent deformation. The finite element implementation of the proposed model is presented in this paper. All parameters in the proposed model and elastic law can be easily estimated based on experimental data. The numerical analyses show that the results are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • Strut insulator in a vehicle is an important part to prevent noise and vibration which is created for driving on the road. Most of the viscoelastic-mounts are made of rubber and natural rubber is the key ingredient. These rubber products show well performance for the initial time, but they will degrade after they are exposed to a high temperature circumstance and a cyclic load. NVH performance and comfort in a vehicle were decreased by these degradation of the rubber. In this study, spring displacement in a vehicle was measured to make a profile in the simulation test performed with an acceleration sensor. In addition, acceleration level, rubber permanent deformation and hardness of the rubber were measured according to drive distance and vehicle model.

RELAXATION OF ORTHODONTIC ELASTICS, ELASTOMERIC MODULES AND CHASMS (교정용 천연 및 합성 고무 탄성재의 이완양태에 관한 연구)

  • The present study was performed to evaluate the relaxation patterns of rubber elastics, elastomeric modules and chains stored in the water bath. Initial loading profiles were established for extension of $100\%,\;200\%$ of their original length for elastomeric chains and of 21, 28, 35, 42, 49mm for rubber elastics and elastomeric modules. The tests were performed on materials stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ and extraoral elastics stored in dry state at room temperature, at 0 hour, 1 hour, 6 hours, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks, respectively. The following results were drawn: 1. The relaxation of rubber elastics manifested no correlation with increments of the extension distances, but showed correlation with time lapse. Remaining forces of rubber elastics carne out $84.6-98.52\%$ after 1 day, $70.92-89.31\%$ after 3 weeks of period. 2. The relaxation of elastomers manifested no correlation with increments of the extension distances, however represented considerable relaxation with time lapse as rapid relaxation after 1 hour and then gradual relaxations with time lapse. Modules relaxed much more than chains. $60.58-67.05\%$ of remaining forces for chains and $37.77-65.17\%$ for modules after 1 hour were turned out, and $51.48-62.22\%$ for chains and $8.04-25.15\%$ for modules after 3 weeks as well. 3. Permanent deformation rates of rubber elastics could not be measured with present investigation, but elastomers underwent severe deformations. 4. $3-9\%$ of permanent deformations for chains, $3-10\%$ for modules at 0 hour were turned out, and $25-30\%$ for chains, $96-145\%$ for modules after 3 weeks as well.

Effects of Chlorobutyl Rubber Content on the Mechanical Properties of Chlorobutyl Rubber Blends (클로로부틸 고무 함량이 클로로부틸 고무 블렌드물의 기계적 물성에 미치는 영향)

  • The CIIR blends with SBR, NBR and BR were prepared with various mixing ratios. The mechanical and physical properties of these blends, such as frictional coefficient, abrasion resistance, compression set, and specific gravity, were measured. In the permanent compression set measurement, the blends at the composition of 75 wt% CIIR showed the highest value, which means the lowest resistance to deformation. As SBR, NBR and BR blends with CIIR, the coefficient of friction of the mixtures showed a tendency to decrease in arithmetic average. In the case of blending CIIR with BR in order to increase the friction force, the negative effect due to reduction in abrasion resistance was greater than the positive effect of the improvement of the traction force caused by increasing friction coefficient.

  • Buried pipeline is a indispensable factor of leading smoothly a society as a primary role. Recently, as a matter of convenience of construction and the economical purpose, the use of Precast Concrete products quickly increased. But there was various damage forms in a part of joint of Precast Concrete buried pipeline. The purpose of this study is to propose the new type of the flexible rubber packing material (EF) which could resist a permanent deformation of the ground or an earthquake and to investigate its safety together with effectiveness as conducting experiment and analysis.

  • In the case of high-voltage connectors applied to automobiles, waterproofing has become an important issue for the safety of automobiles. In this study, structural analysis is performed on silicone rubber-type waterproof seals used in the voltage connector. For the structural analysis, the tensile properties of the actual rubber seal are evaluated using a miniaturized tensile testing machine. The Mooney-Rivlin material constants of the rubber seal are determined as follows; $D_1=0$, $C_{01}=0.241$, $C_{10}=0.0142$. The analysis shows that the contact pressure at the top of the seal where the seal and male connector are in contact is approximately three times higher than that at the bottom of the seal where the seal and female connector are in contact. It is confirmed that the waterproofing performance of the rubber seal depends on the contact pressure of the seal bottom where the seal and female connector are in contact. The contact pressure for waterproofing is found to be 4.7 bar. The strain concentration of the curved part is attributed to excessive initial tension. Therefore, a redesign is recommended for uniform stress or strain distribution in the curved section of the seal in response to the stress relaxation problem due to permanent deformation.

  • Wheel tracking and ravelling tests were conducted on the hot mix crumb rubber modified asphalt concrete usmg waste tire t to evaluate the mechanical prope$\pi$ies in comparison with conventional asphalt concrete. According to the test results, the m modified product, lias superior to the conventional one by 50% in the resistance of permanent deformation and by 15% in the m resistance of dmability. The experimental results should recommend thut the waste tir$\xi$ is positively recycled for asphak concrete.

  • Evaluation of the asphalt mixture modified with crumb rubber modifier(CRM) was performed to estimate possibility of using it as a paying material. OACs(optimum asphalt content) of CRM modified asphalt mixtures by dry process and wet process were determined by Marshall mix design and Wheel tracking test and moisture susceptibility test by freezing and thawing were carried out with CRM modified asphalt mixtures at OACs. The results from these tests, resistance of permanent deformation of CRM modified asphalt mixtures were superior to one of AP-5 while showing very low resistance of moisture sensitivity by freezing and thawing. This means that CRM modified asphalt mixtures are very sensitive to freezing and thawing. However, CRM modified asphalt mixture with anti-stripping material showed high improvement to resistance of moisture susceptibility by freezing and thawing. Therefore, it is recommended that when CRM mixtures were used in domestic, CRM modified asphalt mixtures should be with prevention against freezing and thawing resistance by moisture susceptibility.

Evaluation of Hot Mix Asphalt Properties using Complex Modifiers (복합개질제를 이용한 아스팔트 혼합물의 물성 평가)

  • In this study, to improve the performance of asphalt mixtures for plastic deformation occurring mainly in Korea, complex modifiers were prepared by mixing powders and liquid type modifiers. The main constituents were powdery diatomaceous earth, mica and carbon black, and liquid type solid 70% SBR latex. The tensile strength ratios for the two asphalt mixtures used in the test were above 0.80 for the Ministry of Land Transportation (2017) asphalt mixture production and construction guidelines. The effects of increasing the tensile strength in the dry state was more than 14% when the composite modifier was added. The deformation rate per minute by the wheel tracking test load was an average of 0.07 to 0.147 for each mixture. The strain rate per minute was improved by the modifier, and the dynamic stability was improved by almost 100% from 295 to 590. In addition, the final settling was reduced from 11.38 mm to 9.57 mm. A plastic deformation test using the triaxial compression test showed that the amount of deformation entering the plastic deformation failure zone at the end of the second stage section and in the third stage plastic deformation section was 1.76 mm for the conventional mixture and 1.50 mm for the complex modifier mixture. The average slope of the complex modifier asphalt mixture mixed with the multi-functional modifier was 0.005 mm/sec. The plastic deformation rate is relatively small in the section where the road pavement exhibits stable common performance, i.e. the traffic load.

The Effect of Repetitive Compression on the Fatigue Properties of Foam for Footwear Mid-sole (반복압축이 스포츠화용 발포체의 피로특성에 미치는 영향)

  • To study the fatigue properties of three type of foams for footwear midsole, polyurethane(PU), phylon(PH) and injection phylon(IP) foams were prepared with different hardnesses. Three types of foams were repetitively compressed for 50,000 cycles at 50 rpm. Cell shapes of foams were deformed with repetitive compression. The extent of cell deformation of IP was larger than those of PH and PU. Permanent strain of foam was made by repetitively compressing the foam, and the extent of IP was larger than those of PU and PH. Maximum compression forces of three types of the foams were decreased with the repetitive compression, and IP had the largest decrease in compression load of foam with compression. Decreases in maximum compression force of three types of foams were increased with increase of the hardness of foam.
