  • The nature of the nematic liquid crystal (LC) alignment induced by the rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layers (ALs) and the electro-optical (EO) properties of the LC cells are expected to depend on the chemical and physical features of the PI. By employing five pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)-type PIs having different functionalities, we have studied the effects of the PI's structure and chemistry on the alignment characteristics and the cell's EO properties. Increasing the flexibility of the PI increases the pretilt angle and tends to improve the alignment stability. On the other hand, the rigid, fluorinated PI displays poor stability for LCs and induces a less stable/uniform LC alignment and, subsequently, a small pre tilt angle. It also transpired that fluorination of the PI deteriorated the voltage-transmittance characteristics and the voltage holding ratio; increasing the flexibility of the PI structure improves these EO properties. The finding that the qualitative trends for the PI's functionalities are similar for both the alignment and EO properties suggests that the EO properties are closely related to the alignment characteristics, which are determined by short-range interactions between LC and PI molecules.

  • In this study, the threshold voltage and the response time of thermal stressed TN-LCDs showed the same performances on no thermal stressed TN-LCDs. There was little change of value in TN cells. Also, the transmittances of TN-LCDs on the rubbed PI surface were almost same while increasing thermal stress time. However, the thermal stability of TN cell was decreased by the high thermal stress for the long duration. Residual DC was decreased as the thermal stress increases. Especially, when TN cell was stressed more and more by heating, residual DC was changed a lot. As a result, the residual DC property of LCD in projection TV is affected very much by heating.

  • The Liquid Crystal (LC) alignment uniformity is very important in LC devices. The alignment mechanism of LC molecules on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface is very important for both LC fundamental research and application. So, Generally a rubbing method to align LC has been widely used to mass-produce LCD panels. But because rubbing method is contact method between rubbing fabric and indium-tin-oxide glass or flexible substrate, rubbing method has some defects, such as the electrode charges and the creation of contaminating particles. Thus we strongly recommend a non-contact alignment technique for getting rid of some defects of rubbing method. Most recently, the LC aligning capabilities achieved by ion-beam exposure on the organic and nonorganic thin film surface have been reported successfully. In this research, we studied the tilt angle generation and electro-optical performances for a NLC on homeotropic polyimide surfaces with ion-beam exposure. The LC aligning capabilities of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on a homeotropic PI surface using a new ion-beam method were studied. On the homeotropic PI surface, the tilt angle of the NLC by exposure ion-beam had a tendency to decrease as increased ion-beam energy density. And, on the homeotropic PI surface, the alignment character of the NLC with respect to ion-beam energy was good. And we achieved satisfactory result for EO character.

  • We present the alignment characteristics of LC (liquid crystal) molecules on solution-derived HLO (hafnium lanthanum oxide) films fabricated using IB (ion-beam) irradiation. We then demonstrated that LC molecules can be homogeneously and uniformly aligned on the HLO film irradiated at an IB incident energy of 1.2 keV. Physicochemical analysis methods such as atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to verify the LC alignment mechanism on the IB-irradiated HLO film. In addition, the electro-optical performance of a TN (twisted-nematic) cell fabricated using the IB-irradiated HLO film exhibited characteristics superior to those of the conventional TN cell fabricated using a rubbed polyimide layer.

  • Novel optical measurement systems and improved cell configurations for measuring of azimuthal anchoring energies were developed. The difference between the mechanical rubbing direction and the optical easy axis that caused errors in the previous azimuthal anchoring energy measurement was compensated. In addition, the measurement accuracy of the twist angle and therefore the azimuthal anchoring energy was greatly enhanced. As a result, we were able to obtain valid azimuthal anchoring energy values for different alignment layers.

  • In this paper, the viewing angle characteristics of amorphous (a) - twisted nematic (TN) - liquid crystal display (LCD) on poly(viny)cirmamate (PVC) alignment surfaces were investigated. It was found that the threshold voltage is increased with increasing the polymerization on PVC surfaces. We suggest that the threshold voltage is affected to the surface anchoring strength with increasing the polymerization of the alignment film. Also, we obtained that the viewing angle of a-TN-LCD is increased with increasing the polymerization on PVC surfaces. Finally, we considered that the viewing angle of a-TN-LCD on PVC surfaces is large compared to TN-LCD on rubbed polyimide (Pl) surface.

  • We investigated the residual DC in the in-plane switching (IPS)-liquid crystal display(LCD) by voltage-transmittance (V-T) hysteresis method. Several IPS-LCD which have different concentrations of cynao LCs and different resistivities of fluorine LCs were fabricated. We found that the residual DC voltage of the IPS-LCD was decreasing with increasing concentration of cyano LCs and increasing with decreasing specific resistivity of fluorine LC materials. The residual DC voltage property can be improved by low molecular weight and high polarity of cyano LC.

  • We demonstrated an alternative electrically controlled birefringence liquid crystal (ECB-LC) system with ion beam (IB)-irradiated yttrium gallium oxide (YGaO) alignment films using a sol-gel process. The surface roughness of the films was dependent on the annealing temperature; aggregated particles on surface were observed at lower annealing temperatures, whereas a smooth surface could be obtained with higher annealing temperatures. Higher transmittance in the visible region was observed at higher annealing temperatures. The film had an amorphous crystallographic state irrespective of the annealing temperature. Furthermore, ECB-LC cell with our IB-irradiated YGaO film yielded faster response time when compared to ECB-LC cell with rubbed polyimide. Considering the fast response time and high transmittance, the IB-irradiated YGaO-base LC system is a powerful alternative application for the liquid crystal display industry.

  • Photoresponsive side chain copolymer and homopolymer containing an aminonitroazobenzene were synthesized for studying photoisomerization behavior and photo-induced anisotropy. Trans-to-cis photoisomerization was observed under the exposure of a circularly polarized visible light with UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. Reorientation of polar azobenzene molecules induced optical anisotropy under a linearly polarized light at 532nm. Polarized absorption spectroscopy was employed to investigate the anisotropy of the polymer film during irradiationg of the excitation light. Layers of two photosensitive polymers were used for aligning liquid crystal(LC) molecules instead of one of the rubbed polyimide layers in the conventional twisted nematic cell. For producing homogeneous alignment of a nematic LC molecule, a linearly polarized light was exposed to the films of two polymers. The stability of the LC alignment upon the linearly polarized light exposure was also studied.

  • Inorganic alignment layer (IAL) was deposited on an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) by using reactive sputtering deposition method. After deposited, IAL was irradiated by $Ar^+$ ion beam (IB) for liquid crystal (LC) alignment. IAL treated by various conditions such as IB energy, IB incident angle, and IB irradiation time had excellent alignment property and electro-optical property the same as that of PI. We investigated into the stability of ion beam treated IAL after a lapse of long time. However IAL irradiated IB did not occur degradation of electro-optical property. The results implied that IAL irradiated IB was adopted as LC alignment layer instead of rubbed polyimide.
