This study dealt with traffic accidents occurring within roundabouts. The objective was to develop roundabout accident models for different driving types by using simultaneous equations. In pursuing the above, this study used a statistical program SPSS 17.0 to accommodate data from 148 accidents occurred within 39 roundabouts of Korea. In addition, the 2SLS(2 stage least square) estimation method was adopted to calibrate the models. The main results are as follows. First, both the number of accidents and the EPDO were evaluated to have bilateral relationships. Second, all 6 different simultaneous equation models according to driving types were found to be statistically significant. Third, the developed models were compared to each other with respect to either common or specific variables. Finally, variables such as ADT, conflicting rate, heavy vehicle ratio, circulatory roadway width, number of circulatory roadway lane, approach lane width, average approach lanes, parking places, and bus stops were selected as independent variables for the models.

Roundabouts face a congestion problem when there are unbalanced traffic conditions, especially during peak times. The congestion at roundabouts results in long delay times and low level of service. Some research has addressed congestion problems of the metering roundabout, however, few studies have focused on the congestion issues of the double signals metering roundabout. This research bridges this gap through analyzing the congestion issues of the Old Belair double signals roundabout in Adelaide. The research proposes a new analysis method based on a four-nodes intersection in order for double signals roundabout analysis to be carried out as follows: firstly, at the modeling stage, a connection of four individual intersections, adjustment of lane geometry, input of directional traffic volumes, priority and phase time set up are proposed. Secondly, for calibration, PFF, critical gap, follow-up headway and extra bunching values have been applied. The results from the analysis show that the new method is able to analyze the delay time, level of service, degree of saturation and allow for further analysis.
Marine traffic engineering is the technical field that observe flows of vessel traffic in accurate and describe the features of ships' movement statistically or analytically, then contribute to the improvement of the traffic flow and safety of traffic. Recently, marine traffic engineering has been developed until that possible to estimate a changes in traffic flow caused from some transformations of the traffic condition, and to assess the feasibility and validity of the changes by computer simulation. This paper aims to assess the present traffic safety at the sea area adjacent to Pusan harbour, and the validity of the suggested roundabouts traffic separation scheme at the Pusan approaching water(by Park in 1998) using environmental stress aggregation model There are couple of steps to describe the marine traffic situation and to assess it's safety by computer simulation. The first step is observe the movement of vessel traffic concerned waters and to obtain the relevant data for computer simulation. Second step is to carry out computer simulation to assess the simulated traffic flows by using suitable indexes of assessment model - environmental stress aggregation model. Eventually, this paper conclude that the environmental stress aggregation model is a useful technique to assess the traffic safety and the suggested roundabouts traffic separation scheme could make the concerned area safer than present traffic situation.
PURPOSES : Under the capacity conditions with balanced approach flows, roundabouts give less delay than existing signalized intersections; however, flows over 450 vehicles/hour/lane with unbalanced approach flow conditions, roundabouts efficiency drops due to the short time difference between the critical gap and the follow-up headway. The purpose of this study is developing a roundabout Signal Metering operation method by considering approach lanes degree of saturation. METHODS : A four-way-approach with one-lane roundabout is selected to compare the Signal Metering performance for the case of 16 different unbalanced flow conditions. Based on these traffic conditions, the performance is evaluated for 64 different cases of Signal Metering combinations by using SIDRA software. A degree of saturation(V/C ratio) sum for two adjoined approaches is used for the performance index of choosing Metered Approach and Controlling Approach. RESULTS : When the V/C ratio sum is 0.29~0.81 and Metered Approach flow is less than Controlling Approach flow, the average delay saving per vehicle is about 7 seconds; however, after this rage the delay saving decreases gradually until the V/C ratio sum reaches around 1.0. The range of V/C ratio sum 0.93~1.09 provides average delay saving per vehicle about 3 seconds. In case of V/C ratio sum is grater than 1.0 and the flows of Metered Approach is grater than Controlling Approach, the average delay per vehicle increases 3~11 times respectively. CONCLUSIONS : As expected, the Signal Metering provides substantial improvements in delay saving for the case of V/C ratio sum is 0.3~1.0 under the traffic flow conditions of Metered Approach is less than Controlling Approach.

It is generally known that a two-lane roundabout has some problems in safety such as increasing conflicts, typically merging and diverging conflicts and conflicts between entering traffic and exiting as well as turning traffic. To solve these problems, a turbo-roundabout had been developed and has successfully brought safer and more efficient operation in other countries. In this study, micro simulations using VISSIM were conducted to investigate the maximum value of service traffic volume. It was found that operation of turbo-roundabouts was influenced by traffic volume for each turning traffic, and the maximum values of traffic volume were values between 2,400 and 2,800 vehicles per hour as rates of traffic volume for each turning traffic. Typically, turbo-roundabouts have limited to operate in conditions with more than 30% for left-turning traffic volume.

Roundabouts have been spreading out all over the world quickly with their attractions including capacity enhancement, safety increase and pollutant emission decrease. The history of Korean roundabout has already been 10 years. However, due to the accumulation of unclear right of way and insufficient data, the advantages of the roundabout are not fully utilized so far. Moreover, there are some differences in the capacity model of roundabouts compared to overseas capacity models. In addition, most research tend to concentrate in evaluation of roundabout performance using computer software. This paper, therefore, investigated overseas typical roundabout capacity models; empirical model and gap acceptance model, and then KHCM 2013 was compared to SIDRA model and USHCM 2010 model. It is expected that this paper will assist and guide practitioners in analyzing and estimating roundabout capacity more precise.

An important factor that causes delays at roundabouts is unbalanced traffic conditions. The majority of domestic studies have tendedto focus on the proportion of entering traffic rather than conflicting traffic in order to explain unbalanced traffic conditions. Also, there is scant research on the proper distance between a signalized intersection and a roundabout. In this study, therefore, unbalanced traffic conditions and optimal distance between two intersections were analyzed using SIDRA software based on the Gajwa-ro roundabout in Icheon, where unbalanced traffic conditions occur during afternoon peak hours, and its position is 295 m from a signalized intersection. It was found that a state of unbalanced traffic conditions in the form of conflicting traffic caused delays at Gajwa-ro roundabout, and the queuing length on each approach was removed when there was 850 m of distance between two intersections.

The purpose of this study is to find the driving difficulty of automated vehicles in terms of road infrastructure operation. It was judged out of this study that the level of automated driving would be enhanced if the road situation recognition ability was advanced through the presentation of infrastructure information during the difficult driving situations. The difficulty evaluation index was divided into three stages, and a survey of experts and an AHP were conducted. The result of the AHP showed that the driving difficulty of the interrupted flow was much higher than that of the uninterrupted flow. The AHP results also showed that and the driving difficulty of unsignalized intersections and roundabouts under an interrupted flow was evaluated as the highest. The top six driving situations with high difficulty were also evaluated to occur under unsignalized intersections and roundabouts.

As of 2020, 1,564 roundabouts have been installed and operated to prevent major traffic accidents and promote safe and smooth passage over the past 10 years. According to the Korea Transportation Research Institute, the number of accidents decreased by an average of 43.8% per year, fatal accidents by 50%, and serious injuries by 48.1%, confirming the safety effect. However, most intersections with high pedestrian traffic, such as children's protection areas near elementary schools, operate signal intersections. Therefore, in this study, a simulation was performed through the VISSM program to conduct a study on the pedestrian-centered roundabout installation method. This study was conducted to ensure that pedestrians can have the right of way safely by installing and operating traffic lights at crosswalks on roundabouts located in urban areas or child protection zones.
The goal of this study is to develop the accident models of motorcycle at roundabouts. In the pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to developing the appropriate models using ZAM. The main results are as follows. First, the evaluation of various developed models by the Vuong statistic and over-dispersion parameter shows that ZINB is analyzed to be optimal among Poisson, NB, ZIP(zero-inflated Poisson) and ZINB regression models. Second, the traffic volume, width of central island and width of approach are evaluated to be important variables to the accidents. Finally, the common variables that affect to the accident are selected to be traffic volume and width of approach. This study might be expected to give some implications to the accident research on the roundabout by motorcycle.
