  • Magnetoresistance (MR) of mumetal/Co/Co/Co multilayer is measured as a function of surface etching on the top Co layer by ion beam etching system. As the etching process proceeds, Co thickness and roughness decreases. MR is dominantly affected by Co layer thickness, but surface roughness makes no significant effect on the MR of mumetal/Co/Cu/Co multilayer.

  • Microstructure evolution during low temperature vapor deposition exhibits wel-developed columnar structure mainly owing to geometrical shadowing effect of surface roughness. It is concluded that this structure is concided with many theoretical models suggested so far. In case of aluminum nitride film deposition consisted of etching and nitriding step employing ECR plasma, the rougher the surface before etching, the finer and more cone-and-whisker structure can be developed. In turn, this fine structure affects the formation and growth of columnar as well as offers many sites available for mechanical lock-up. Conclusively, the formation of well-defined columnar structures depends on the initial surface roughness.

  • There were attempts to reduce the micro leakage and surface roughness of resin composite. One of them is surface sealing. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of materials, specifically developed for surface sealing, on microleakage and surface roughness in Class V composite restorations. Twenty five standardized Class V cavity preparations were made on the facial surface of extracted human premolars and were randomly assigned to 5 groups. The teeth were restored with Z-250 resin composite after applying Single Bond adhesive system.(중략)

  • The fully developed turbulent momentum and heat transfer induced by the square-ribed roughness elements on the inner wall surface in concentric annuli is studied analytically based on a modified turbulence model. The analytical results of the fluid flow is verified by experiment. The resulting momentum and heat transfer are discussed in terms of various parameters, such as the radius ratio, the relative roughness, the roughness density, fluid Reynolds number and for heat transfer, fluid Prandtl number. The study demonstrates that certain artificial roughness elements may be used to enhance heat transfer rates with advantages from the overall efficiency point of view.

  • An experiment has been carried out to investigate the aerodynamic effect of surface roughness on the characteristics of the turbulent separation and reattaching flow downstream of a backward-facing step. The distributions of boundary layer parameters, forward-flow fraction and turbulent stresses in the region near the reattachment point are measured with a split film sensor. It is demonstrated that the streamwise distributions of the forward-flow fraction in the recirculation and reattachment regions are similar, independent of the roughness. The reattachment length is found to be only weakly affected by the roughness. It is also shown that the velocity profile on the rough surface approaches to that of the equilibrium turbulent boundary layer faster than that on the smooth surface in the redeveloping region after reattachment.

  • High speed milling process is emerging as an important fabrication process benefits include the ability to fabricate micro and meso-scale parts out of a greater range of materials and with more varied geometry. It also enables the creation of micro and meso-scale molds for injection molding. Factors affecting surface roughness have not been studied in depth for this process. A series of experiments has been conducted in order to begin to characterize the factors affecting surface roughness and determine the range of attainable surface roughness values for the high speed milling process. It has previously been shown that run-out creates a greater problem for the dimensional accuracy of parts created by high speed milling process. And run-out also has a more significant effect on the surface quality of milled parts. The surface roughness traces reveal large peak to valley variations. This run-out is generated by spindle dynamics and tool geometry. In order to investigate the relationship between tool setting errors and surface roughness end tilted mills were used to cut aluminum samples. The results indicate that tool setting errors have significant effects on surface roughness and cutting forces.

  • The ultrasonic polishing machine was developed to get super finishing that consist of machine part that can rotate and travel the main shaft with power 1.5kW, ultrasonic generator with frequency 20kHz. By using this machine we were investigated the characteristics of ultrasonic polishing for three different ceramics, and so could be obtained following results. First, we could be obtained the excellent surface for hard-ta-difficult cutting materials. Second, the effect of surface roughness for the feed rate could be shown that the more the feed rate Increases, the more the value of surface roughness increases. Third, owing to the characteristics being progressed brittle fracture in $Al_2O_3$ polishing with this machine, the value of surface roughness is larger than other ceramics. Forth, because the ultrasonic polishing can be smoother than the existing grinding in discharging the chips, it could be possible to improve the surface roughness about up to 15%.

  • This study investigated the effect of surface roughness of zinc oxide (ZnO) layer on the growth of polycrystalline Si layer via an Al-induced layer exchange process. It was found that the growth rate, grain size, crystallization fraction, and preferential orientation of the polycrystalline Si layer were strongly influenced by the surface roughness of the underlying ZnO layer. As the roughness of the ZnO surface increased, a higher growth rate (~40 min) and preferential Si (100) orientation were obtained because of the spatial concentration fluctuations in the Al-Si alloy, induced by the surface roughness of the underlying ZnO layer.

  • In this research, we studied the pressure drop affecting on the internal surface roughness and the curvature radius of a U-tube, which is used for the cooling system in PWR(Pressurized Water Reactor). Using ANSYS-FLUENT, a commercial code based on CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique, we compared a Moody chart with the Darcy friction factor changed by a range of various surface roughness and Reynolds numbers of a straight pipe model. We studied the effect giving variation about a range of various surface roughness and the curvature radius of the full scale U-tube model. The material of the heat transfer tube is Inconel 690 used in the steam generator. We compared the velocity distribution of selected 4 locations, and derived the correlation between the surface roughness and the pressure drop for the U-tube of each representative curvature radius using the linear regression method.

  • Recently, WC-Co have some excellent properities as the material for the mechanical component such as metallic moulding parts, ball dies parts, and punch parts. This paper describes the surface roughness and grinding force caused by experimental study on the surface grinding of WC-Co with ultra-precision like a mirror shape using diamond wheel. Also, some investigations are carried out using WA grinding wheel to increase improved ground surface roughness such as polishing, lapping effect. Some important results obtained here are summarized as follow. 1) Within this experimental grinding condition, we can be obtained $R_{max}.\;2\mu\textrm{m}\;R_a\;0.3\mu\textrm{m}$ whichare the most favourable ground surface roughness using #140 diamond wheel, and improved surface roughness values about 20 .approx. 25% throughout 5 times sparkout grinding 2) The value of surface roughness is Rmax. $0.49\mu\textrm{m},\;R_a\;0.06\mu\textrm{m}$ using #600 diamond wheel. 3) The area of no rack zone is less than $F_{n}$ 0.27N/mm, Ft 0.009N/mm
