A volume density of roughness correction blocks in a channel is defined and the corresponding roughness coefficient(n) is estimated by analyzing the diverse hydraulic characteristics of VR, the product of the average velocity and the hydraulic radius, block Reynolds number ($Re^*$), drag coefficient ($\acute{C}_D$), and the roughness coefficient ($n_b$) of bottom shear. The increase of VR and block Reynolds number causes the exponential decrease of roughness coefficient converged to a constant value as expected. The drag coefficient also exponentially decreases as block Reynolds number increases as well. The drag force is governed by the block shape defined by volume density in high block Reynolds number of turbulent flow region. For more accurate estimation of roughness coefficient the use of the correlation equation of it is required by block Reynolds number and volume density. The regression equations for n-VR, $\acute{C}_D-Re^*$, and $n_b-\acute{C}_D$ are presented. The regression equations of roughness coefficient are also presented by block Reynolds number and volume density. The developed equation of roughness coefficient by block Reynolds number and volume density has practical use by confirming the coincidence between the experimental results and the results of HEC-RAS using the developed equation.

The purpose of this study is to analyse characteristics of roughness coefficient based on bed-material size of the gravel-bed rivers using field data obtained from nine domestic rivers. Roughness coefficient is calculated using Manning's equation. Roughness coefficient decreases with increasing discharge, but above a certain discharge, it tends to be constant. Similarly, roughness coefficient shows reverse relationship with relative smoothness (R/D). The regression equation adopting theoretically derived value of 2.03 as log coefficient indicates close similarity with the previous equation proposed by Limerinos (1970). Roughness coefficient values converged above certain discharges lie in the range from 0.024 to 0.045. From them, empirical equations based only on bed-material size are derived and compared with those suggested by the previous studies.
In this study, we estimated, the equivalent roughness using an estimation model, which considered grain distribution on the bed and the protrusion height of the grains. We also reviewed the appropriateness of the estimated equivalent roughness at the Goksung and Gurey station in the Seomjin River. To review the appropriateness of this model, we presented the water level-discharge relation curve applying the equivalent roughness to the flow model and compared and reviewed it to observed data. Also, we compared and reviewed the observed data by estimating the Manning coefficient n, the Chezy coefficient C, and the Darcy-Weisbach friction coefficient f by the equivalent roughness. The calculation results of the RMSE showed within 5% error range in comparison with observed value. Therefore the estimated equivalent roughness values by the model could be proved appropriate.

The effect of characteristic of surface roughness and roughness patterns on friction and sliding wear was studied experimentally under reciprocating boundary lubricant sliding conditions. The test was conducted with specimens which have various arithmetic mean value and roughness pattern under the condition of different normal load. The experimental results show that the friction coefficient is decreased because of oxidation mass and valley effect as the normal loads increasing It was found that the specimens with surface roughness with a transverally oriented pattern have a smaller firction coefficient than the other two roughness patterns under the condition of the roughness values of Ra=0.5 and Ra=0.2 .

The shear strength of jointed rock is influenced by effective normal stress, joint wall compressive strength, joint roughness and so on. Since joint roughness makes considerable influences on shear strength of jointed rock, many studies tried to get quantitative joint roughness parameter. Until now, Joint Roughness Coefficient, JRC proposed by Barton has been prevalently used as a rock joint roughness parameter In spite of its disadvantages. In this study, a quantification of rock joint roughness is performed using surface roughness parameter, Rs. Proposed method is applied to rock core specimens, field joint surfaces, and JRC profiles. The scale of fluctuation is introduced to extend the suggested method to the large scale field joint surface roughness. Based on the quantification of joint surface roughness, joint shear tests are performed with the portable shear box. The relationship between joint surface roughness and joint shear strength is investigated and finally, a rock joint shear strength equation is derived from these results. The equation has considerable credibility and originality in that it is obtained from laboratory tests and expressed with quantified parameter.

The roughness coefficients were estimated by the Manning's equation for the measured stage and flow velocity of Bocheong stream basin in Kum river. The relationships between the estimated roughness coefficients and the geomorphologic factors were formulated by the linear, logarithmic, exponential and power type function, thereafter correlation equations were presented. The correlation analysis was performed between the measured stream length and the basin area of Bocheong stream basin by the linear, logarithmic, exponential and power type function, and correlation equation for the stream length was given. The roughness coefficient has strong correlationship with stream slope, but low correlation coefficients with stream length and basin area. For the correlationship with the roughness coefficients and the stream slope, the logarithmic type function has the smallest correlation coefficient, on the other hand, the exponential type function has the largest correlation coefficient. For the relationship between the stream length and the basin area, the correlation coefficient of the logarithmic type function shows the smallest value, linear type function shows the largest value.
A multiply-connected network unsteady flow model for the main reach of the Han River is developed. It is a variable parameter model which allows variable roughness coefficient for each computational point according to the spatial position and the value of discharge. Sensitivities of the model to roughness coefficient and weir-flow discharge coefficient are tested, and as a result Manning's roughness coefficient is selected as the calibration parameter. The model is calibrated and verified using the records of the past flood events. A modified Gauss-Newton method is used for the optimal calibration of roughness coefficients. From the calibration of variable parameter model, spatial variation and discharge dependence of Manning's roughness coefficient are identified. That is, the roughness coefficient is higher for the upstream reach of the Wangsook stream Junction, and it decreases as the discharge increases. It turns out through the verification that the stages calculated by the variable parameter model agree better with the observed than those by the conventional single parameter model. Spatial variation of the roughness coefficient appears to be more significant than the dependence of the discharge.
This paper describes a numerical investigation on the performance deteriorations of a low speed, single-stage axial turbine due to use of rough blades. Numerical calculations have been carried out with a commercial CFD code, CFX-Tascflow, by using a modified wall function to implement rough surfaces on the stator vane and rotor blade. To assess the stage performance variations corresponding to 5 equivalent sand-grain roughness heights from a transition ally rough regime to a fully rough regime, stage work coefficient and total to static efficiency were chosen. Numerical results showed that both work coefficient and stage efficiency reduced as roughness height increased. Higher surface roughness induced higher blade loading both on the stator and rotor which in turn resulted in higher deviation angles and corresponding work coefficient reductions. Although, deviation angle changes were small, a simple sensitivity analysis suggested that their contributions on work coefficient reductions were substantial. Higher profile loss coefficients were predicted by higher roughness heights, especially on the suction surface of the stator and rotor. Furthermore sensitivity analysis similar to the above, suggested that additional profile loss generations due to roughness were accountable for efficiency reductions.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the characteristics of Manning's roughness coefficient according to change of discharge by using observed data obtained from a stable gravel-bed river and to investigate the applicability of the relevant existing empirical methods to it. Observed water level and discharge data are used as input data for the USGS computer program NCALC model for calculation of the roughness coefficient. Calculated values are compared with roughness values which are estimated with four widely used methods. The results show that though the empirical methods are able to give similar roughness values only for flood flow, they seem to have rather high uncertainty because of necessity of subjective judgement and differences of resultant values. Roughness coefficients for normal-low flow cannot be estimated from the existing empirical formulae. Especially, using the Manning equation for calculating them should be careful as this provides a wide range of estimated values in normal-low flow. The relations between the roughness coefficient and characteristic size of bed materials are different from them in flood flow even though they have a close relations.
In order to find the effect of lubricant viscosity, sheet surface roughness, tool geometry, and forming speed on the frictional characteristics in sheet metal forming, a sheet metal friction tester was designed and manufactured and friction test of various sheet were performed. Friction test results showed that as the lubricant viscosity becomes lower, the friction coefficient is higher. When surface roughness is extremely low or high, the friction coefficient is relatively high. The result also show that as the punch radius and punch speed becomes bigger, the friction coefficient is smaller. Using experimental results, the mathematical expression between friction coefficient and lubricant viscosity, surface roughness, punch comer radius, or punch speed is also described.
