In this paper, a new error compensating technique for form-error compensation of rough-surface profile obtained by contact stylus profilometer is proposed. By the method, the real contact points of rough-surface and diamond stylus can be estimated and the measured profile data corrected. To verify the compensation effect, the properties(Ra, RMS, Kurtosis, Skewness) of measured profile data and compensated data were compared. And, the cumulative RMS slope was proposed to assess the compensated effect of upper area of profile. The results show that the measuring error could be compensated very well in amplitude parameters and in proposed cumulative RMS slope by the developed form-error compensating technique.

We present a 3-D profiler specially devised for the profile measurement of rough surfaces that are difficult to be measured with conventional non-contact interferometer. The profiler comprises multiple two-point-diffraction sources made of single-mode optical fibers. Test measurement proves that the proposed profiler is well suited for the warpage inspection of microelectronics components with rough surface, such as unpolished backsides of silicon wafers and plastic molds of integrated-circuit chip package.

An efficient algorithm is proposed to select the proper tools and generate their paths for NC rough cutting of dies and molds with sculptured surfaces. Even though a milling process consists of roughing, semi-finishing, and finishing, most material is removed by a rough cutting process. Therfore it can be said that the rough cutting process occupy an important portion of the NC milling process, and accordingly, an efficient rough cutting method contributes to an efficient milling process. In order work, the following basic assumption is accepted for the efficient machining. That is, to machine a region bounded by a profile, larger tools should be used in the far inside and the region adjacent to relatively simple portion of the boundary while smaller tools are used in the regions adjacent to the relatively complex protion. Thus the tools are selected based on the complexity of the boundary profile adjacent to the region to be machined. An index called cutting path ratio is proposed in this work as a measure of the relative complexity of the profile with respect to a tool diameter. Once the tools are selected, their tool paths are calculated starting from the largest to the smallest tool.
This paper describes a numerical investigation on the performance deteriorations of a low speed, single-stage axial turbine due to use of rough blades. Numerical calculations have been carried out with a commercial CFD code, CFX-Tascflow, by using a modified wall function to implement rough surfaces on the stator vane and rotor blade. To assess the stage performance variations corresponding to 5 equivalent sand-grain roughness heights from a transition ally rough regime to a fully rough regime, stage work coefficient and total to static efficiency were chosen. Numerical results showed that both work coefficient and stage efficiency reduced as roughness height increased. Higher surface roughness induced higher blade loading both on the stator and rotor which in turn resulted in higher deviation angles and corresponding work coefficient reductions. Although, deviation angle changes were small, a simple sensitivity analysis suggested that their contributions on work coefficient reductions were substantial. Higher profile loss coefficients were predicted by higher roughness heights, especially on the suction surface of the stator and rotor. Furthermore sensitivity analysis similar to the above, suggested that additional profile loss generations due to roughness were accountable for efficiency reductions.
We present a new point-diffraction interferometer, which has been devised for the three-dimensional profile measurement of light scattering rough surfaces. The interferometer system has multiple sources of two-point-diffraction and a CCD camera composed of an array of two-dimensional photodetectors. Each diffraction source is an independent two-point-diffraction interferometer made of a pair of single-mode optical fibers, which are housed in a ceramic ferrule to emit two spherical wave fronts by means of diffraction at their free ends. The two spherical wave fronts then interfere with each other and subsequently generate a unique fringe pattern on the test surface. A He-Ne source provides coherent light to the two fibers through a 2${\times}$l optical coupler, and one of the fibers is elongated by use of a piezoelectric tube to produce phase shifting. The xyz coordinates of the target surface are determined by fitting the measured phase data into a global model of multilateration. Measurement has been performed for the warpage inspection of chip scale packages (CSPs) that are tape-mounted on ball grid arrays (BGAs) and backside profile of a silicon wafer in the middle of integrated-circuit fabrication process. When a diagonal profile is measured across the wafer, the maximum discrepancy turns out to be 5.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with a standard deviation of 1.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
Direct numerical simulation of a fully developed turbulent plane Couette-Poiseuille flow with a two-dimensional (2-D) rod-roughened wall is performed to investigate the impacts of the surface roughness. It is shown that the logarithmic region in the mean velocity profile over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is significantly shortened by the surface roughness compared to that over a turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow with smooth wall. The Reynolds shear stress over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is decreased compared to that for a smooth case in the outer layer. These results are attributed to weakened turbulence activity or roll-cell mode over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow near the channel centerline due to suppressed development of u'-structure on the top wall, as documented through spanwise energy spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations. Inspection of congregation motion near the bottom wall and time evolution of u'-structure reveal weakened co-supporting cycle for the rough wall case.

The angular dependence(profile) of backward radiated ultrasound was measured for glass specimens with random surface roughness using ultrasonic goniometer that ran changes the incident angle continuously. It was concluded that the roughened region had greater acoustic impedance than the unperturbed region. The comparison of backward radiations showed that the amplitude of peak and the area of radiation profile were increased with surface roughness. It was suggested from the sensitive dependence of the profile area that the profile of backward radiation could be applied to in the nondestructive evaluation of sulfate region. Inclined C-scan technique with the transducer inclined at Rayleigh angle showed the reverse of luminosity and the high signal to noise ratio so that it provided high resolution.

The friction factor equation of open channel flow is developed by using Prandtl's mixing length theory and considering the flow characteristics of smooth or rough turbulent flow. BYO model considers vertical velocity profile for the (:omputation of bottom friction of surface waves and current flow. The model computes the mean bottom friction of combined wave-current flow by the vectorial summation of wave velocity and current velocity at Bijker point. The near bottom flow is discriminated by three flow regimes; smooth, transitional and rough turbulent flow. The model, BYO, has been further refined considering the combination of smooth turbulent flow and rough turbulent flow.

This paper presents results from a wind tunnel study that examined the drag coefficient and wind flow over an asymmetric wave train immersed in turbulent boundary layer flow. The modeled wavy surface consisted of eight replicas of a statistically-valid hurricane-generated wave, located near the coast in the shoaling wave region. For an aerodynamically rough model surface, the air flow remained attached and a pronounced speed-up region was evident over the wave crest. A wavelength-averaged drag coefficient was determined using the wind profile method, common to both field and laboratory settings. It was found that the drag coefficient was approximately 50% higher than values obtained in deep water hurricane conditions. This study suggests that nearshore wave drag is markedly higher than over deep water waves of similar size, and provides the groundwork for assessing the impact of nearshore wave conditions on storm surge modeling and coastal wind engineering.

The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the physical/chemical properties of concrete surface according to types of formworks. Plywood formwork and coated plywood formwork were prepared. In addition, plywood formwork with sand paper was prepared to simulate deterioration of concrete or rough surface of concrete. Normal concrete was used in this study. The properties of concrete surface were investigated by visual inspection, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques, elemental mapping, 2D and 3D surface profile measurement, and zeta potential measurement. Test results showed that concrete in a coated formwork had smooth surface and concrete in the formwork with sand paper had rough surface. It was observed that properties of concrete surface depended on types of formworks. Furthermore, differences in surface roughness were significantly higher than those in chemical compositions and zeta potential.
