  • Tidal current power system is one of ocean renewable energies that can minimize the environmental impact with many advantages compared to other energy sources. Not like others, the produced energy can be precisely predicted without weather conditions and also the operation rate is very high. To convert the current into power, the first device encountered to the incoming flow is the rotor that can transform into rotational energy. The performance of rotor can be determined by various design parameters including numbers of blade, sectional shape, diameter, and etc. The stream lines near the rotating rotor is very complex and the interference effects around the system is also difficult to predict. This paper introduces the experiment of rotor performance and also the effect of design parameter on the performance of HAT rotor by CFD.

  • Whirl tower test is conducted basically during helicopter rotor system development process. And for whirl tower test of rotor hub system, new design blade or existing blade which is remodeled for new rotor hub system is used. Because of simple shape and efficient aerodynamic characteristic, BO-105 helicopter blade is used for helicopter rotor hub development project widely. Originally BO-105 blade is used for hingeless hub system and blade root is used to flexure. So flap stiffness and lag stiffness at blade root area is relatively low compare with airfoil area. So, in order to apply the BO-105 blade to bearingless hub, blade root area have to be reinforced. And in this process, blade root area's section property is changed. In this paper, we suggest reinforcement method of BO-105 blade root area and study dynamic characteristic of bearingless rotor system with reinforcement BO-105 blade.

  • This paper presents the rotor study on the deal with the shape design with a flux barrier to minimize the cogging torque of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM). In order to consider the notch effect, the torque characteristics according to the shape of notch is performed and analyzed. From the this results, we found that an optimal location and radius of the notch effectively suppresses the torque pulsation of the IPM drive. The rotor shape design also shows improvement in the average torque

  • An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) should be designed to be as small and lightweight as possible to optimize the efficiency of changing the blade shape to enhance the aerodynamic performance, such as the thrust and power. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of an unmanned multi-rotor aerial vehicle in hover mode was performed to explore the thrust performance in terms of the blade rotational speed and blade shape parameters (i.e., taper ratio and twist angle). The commercial ADINA-CFD program was used to generate the CFD data, and the results were compared with those obtained from blade element theory (BET). The results showed that changes in the blade shape clearly affect the aerodynamic thrust of a UAV rotor blade.

  • Performance characteristics of an axial flow fan having distorted inlet flow have been investigated using numerical analysis as well as experiment. Two kinds of hub-cap, rounded and right-angled front shape, are tested to investigate the effect of inlet flow distortion on the fan performance. Numerical solutions are validated in comparison with experimental data measured by a five-hole probe downstream of the fan rotor. It is found from the numerical results that non-uniform axial inlet velocity profile near the hub results in the change of inlet flow angle. Large recirculation flow upstream the fan rotor for the right-angled hub-cap induces a negative incidence, thus invokes separated flow on the blade surfaces and deteriorates the performance of fan rotor.

  • Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor(NASA rotor 37) was carried out using response surface method(RSM) which is one of the optimization methods. A numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes(RANS) equations. Response surfaces that were based on the results of the design of experiment(DOE) techniques were used to find an optimal shape of blade which has the maximum aerodynamic performance. Two objective functions, viz., the adiabatic efficiency and the loss coefficient were selected with three design configurations to optimize the blade shape. As a result, the efficiency of the optimized blade is found to be increased.

  • The properties of superconductor bearing are depend on shape of rotor, especially thickness of ferromagnetic shim between permanent magnets. The levitation forces and stiffness of superconductor bearings as the thickness of the ferromagnetic shim were calculated and measured, Frozen image model and difference of magnetization per unit volume of the superconductor were used to calculate stiffness for two models. The calculated values had similar trend with the measured one. From the results, an optimal design of the rotor was selected.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for suppressing shaft voltage by modifying the shape of the rotor and the permanent magnets in interior permanent magnet-type-high-voltage motors. Shaft voltage, which is induced by parasitic components and the leakage flux in motor-driven systems, adversely affects their bearings. In order to minimize shaft voltage, we designed a magnet rearrangement and rotor re-structuring of the motor. The shaft voltage suppression effect of the designed model was confirmed experimentally and by comparative finite element analysis.

  • This paper deals with the method to calculate the rotor eddy current losses of permanent magnet high-speed machines considering the effects of time/space flux harmonics. The flux harmonics caused by the slot geometry in the stator is calculated from the time variation of the magnetic field distribution obtained by the magneto-static finite element analysis and double Fast Fourier Transform. And, using the analytical approach considering the multiple flux harmonics and the Poynting vector, the rotor losses is evaluated in each rotor composite. Using this method is simple and workable for any kind of stator slot shape for rotor loss analysis.

  • This study is to develop a 1kW-class horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) rotor blade which will be applicable to relatively low wind speed regions in southwest islands in Korea. Shape design of 1kW-class small wind turbine rotor blade is carried out using a blade profile with relatively high lift to drag ratio by blade element momentum theory(BEMT). Aerodynamic analysis on the newly designed rotor blade is performed with the variation of tip speed ratio. Power coefficient and pressure coefficient of the designed rotor blade are investigated according to tip speed ratio.
