High-temperature superconducting rotors offer advantages in terms of output-to-weight ratio and efficiency compared to conventional phase conduction motors or generators. The rotor can be cooled by conduction cooling, which attaches a cryocooler, and by refrigerant circulation, which uses circulating liquid or gas neon, helium and hydrogen. Recent work has focused on environmental issues and on high-temperature superconducting motors cooled with liquid hydrogen that can be combined with fuel cells. However, to ensure smooth supply and return of the cryogenic cooling fluid, a cryogenic rotational coupling between the rotating and stationary parts is necessary. Additionally, the development of a sealing structure to minimize fluid leakage applicable to the coupling is essential. This study describes the design and performance evaluation of a non-contact sealing method, specifically a labyrinth seal, which avoids power loss and heat load caused by friction in contact sealing structures. The seal design incorporates a spiral flow path to reduce leakage using centrifugal force, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to analyze the flow path and rotational speed. A performance evaluation device was configured and employed to evaluate the designed seal. The results of this study will be used to develop a cryogenic rotational coupling with supply and return flow paths for cryogenic applications.

Nano-oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) superalloys have attracted attention because of their outstanding mechanical reinforcement mechanism. Dispersed oxides increase the material's strength by preventing grain growth and recrystallization, as well as increasing creep resistance. In this research, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was applied to synthesize an ODS alloy. It is useful to coat conformal thin films even on complex matrix shapes, such as nanorods or powders. We coated an Nb-Si-based superalloy with TiO2 thin film by using rotary-reactor type thermal ALD. TiO2 was grown by controlling the deposition recipe, reactor temperature, N2 flow rate, and rotor speed. We could confirm the formation of uniform TiO2 film on the surface of the superalloy. This process was successfully applied to the synthesis of an ODS alloy, which could be a new field of ALD applications.

The sensorless control of high efficiency air compressors using a permanent magnet type synchronous motor as an oil-free air compressor is quite common. However, due to the nature of the air compressor, it is difficult to install a position sensor. In order to control the permanent magnet type synchronous motor at variable speed, the inclusion of a position sensor to grasp the position of the rotor is essential. Therefore, in order to achieve sensorless control, it is essential to use a permanent magnet type synchronous motor in the compressor. The position estimation method based on the back electromotive force, which is widely used as the sensorless control method, has a limitation in that position errors occur due either to the phase delay caused by the use of a stationary coordinate system or to the estimated back electromotive force in the transient state caused by the use of a synchronous coordinate system. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method of estimating the position and velocity using a rotation angle tracking observer and reducing the speed ripple through a disturbance observer. An experimental apparatus was constructed using Freescale's MPU and the feasibility of the proposed algorithm was examined. It was confirmed that even if a position error occurs at a certain point in time, the position correction value converges to the actual vector position when the position error value is found.
Spar platforms have several advantages for deploying wind turbines in offshore for depth beyond 120 m. The merit of spar platform is large range of topside payloads, favourable motions compared to other floating structures and minimum hull/deck interface. The main objective of this paper is to present the response analysis of the slack moored spar platform supporting 5MW wind turbine with bottom keel plates in regular and random waves, studied experimentally and numerically. A 1:100 scale model of the spar with sparD, sparCD and sparSD configuration was studied in the wave basin ($30{\times}30{\times}3m$) in Ocean engineering department in IIT Madras. In present study the effect of wind loading, blade dynamics and control, and tower elasticity are not considered. This paper presents the details of the studies carried out on a 16 m diameter and 100 m long spar buoy supporting a 90 m tall 5 MW wind turbine with 3600 kN weight of Nacelle and Rotor and 3500 kN weight of tower. The weight of the ballast and the draft of the spar are adjusted in such a way to keep the centre of gravity below the centre of buoyancy. The mooring lines are divided into four groups, each of which has four lines. The studies were carried out in regular and random waves. The operational significant wave height of 2.5 m and 10 s wave period and survival significant wave height of 6 m and 18 s wave period in 300 m water depth are considered. The wind speed corresponding to the operational wave height is about 22 knots and this wind speed is considered to be operating wind speed for turbines. The heave and surge accelerations at the top of spar platform were measured and are used for calculating the response. The geometric modeling of spar was carried out using Multisurf and this was directly exported to WAMIT for subsequent hydrodynamic and mooring system analysis. The numerical results were compared with experimental results and the comparison was found to be good. Parametric study was carried out to find out the effect of shape, size and spacing of keel plate and from the results obtained from present work ,it is recommended to use circular keel plate instead of square plate.

In this study, novel ultrasonic rotary motor of hexadecagon shape stator was proposed. Stator of the hexadecagon ultrasonic motor was composed of an elastic ring and ceramics. The elastic ring had sixteen sides and sixteen angular points. Eight ceramics were attached on the outer surface of the eight sides of the ring. When rotor of cylindrical shaft was inserted inside of the ring stator, central lines of the sixteen sides of the stator hold the shaft by the slight pressures(frictions). This slight pressure was a preload of the motor and it could be controlled by radius and thickness of the ring. When two sinusoidal voltages which have 90 degree phase difference were applied to each four ceramics, elliptical displacements of inner surface of the ring were obtained. These elliptical displacements of the inner surface rotated the shaft rotor through the frictions. The proposed hexadecagon ultrasonic motor was designed and analyzed by using the finite element method (FEM), depending on materials of the elastic ring. Based on the FEM results, one model of motor which showed maximum displacement at contact points was chosen and fabricated. And characteristics of the motor were compared with simulated results. When the motor was fabricated with these results, EL20ET0.5CT0.5CW2 model showed 115[rpm] speed about input voltage of 60[Vrms] at 65.6[kHz]. And the maximum torque of 6[gfcm] was obtained. From these results, the hexadecagon shaped ultrasonic motor can be used to actuator for optical device which needs detailed position control. Also it can be used to medical and portable device by reducing size and weight.

This paper describes the stabilization of underwater TAS winch system Deploy/Recover operation performance. TAS winch installed on the stern of submarine performs to deploy/recover sensor, towing cable and rope tail which is deployed from the stern and separated from submarine itself. Also TAS winch provides transmission path of power to the sensor and data transmitting/receiving path which data are acquired from underwater environment like sound, depth and temperature. At the step of TAS winch evaluation test, sporadic standstill and rotating speed oscillation phenomenon were occurred. Winch motor provides the available torque to deploy/recover TAS and root cause analysis to the winch motor was done to find exact reason to sporadic malfunction. When winch motor was disassembled, eccentricity of rotor, slip-ring and the other composition part for winch motor were found. These might cause magnetic field distortion. To make TAS winch system more stable and block magnetic field distortion, this paper suggests methods to enhance fixing status installed in winch motor. For reliable data acquisition for TAS winch operation, the deploy/recover function of the improved type of TAS winch was verified in LBTS making similar condition with sea status. At the end of stage, improved type of TAS winch was tested on some functions not only deploy/recover function, but sustainability of TAS operation on specific velocity, steering angle of submarine in the sea trial. Improved type of TAS winch was verified in accordance with design requirement. Also, validity of suggested methods were verified by the sea trial.
We studied the compact anode design to develop 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube with large focal spot 1.2 mm, small focal spot 0.6 mm and tube voltage 150 kV for large hospital digital radiography using computer thermal simulation. The larger thermal radiation effect in a high vacuum can reduce the temperature of anode so the method to increase the surface area of anode is investigated. The anode has the multi-tier shape at the back side of TZM body of anode and also bigger diameter of anode. The number of multi-tiers was varied from 6 to 15 and the diameter of anode was also varied from ${\Phi}74$ to ${\Phi}82$. From ANSYS transient thermal simulation result, we could obtain $1056.4^{\circ}C$ anode maximum temperature when applying 100 kW input power at 0.1 second on target focal track which is less than $1091^{\circ}C$ of the conventional 75 kW X-ray tube with reduced anode weight by 15.5% than the conventional anode. The compact anode of reduced anode weight is able to improve the unwanted noise when the rotor is rotating at high-speed and also reduce the rotational torque which the cost effective stator-coil is possible. It is believed that the anode with 15 ea multi-tiers using ${\Phi}82$ can satisfy with the specification of the anode heat capacity. From the results of this paper, it has been confirmed that the proposed compact anode can be used as the anode of 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube for digital radiography.
Dynamic Stall is a flow phenomenon which occurs on the retreating side of helicopter rotor blades during forward flight. It also occurs on blades of stall regulated wind turbines under yawing conditions as well as during gust loads. Time scales occurring during this process are comparable on both helicopter and wind turbine blades. Dynamic Stall limits the speed of the helicopter and its manoeuvrability and limits the amount of power production of wind turbines. Extensive numerical as well as experimental investigations have been carried out recently to get detailed insight into the very complex flow structures of the Dynamic Stall process. Numerical codes have to be based on the full equations, i.e. the Navier-Stokes equations to cover the scope of the problems involved: Time dependent flow, unsteady flow separation, vortex development and shedding, compressibility effects, turbulence, transition and 3D-effects, etc. have to be taken into account. In addition to the numerical treatment of the Dynamic Stall problem suitable wind tunnel experiments are inevitable. Comparisons of experimental data with calculated results show us the state of the art and validity of the CFD-codes and the necessity to further improve calculation procedures. In the present paper the phenomenon of Dynamic Stall will be discussed first. This discussion is followed by comparisons of some recently obtained experimental and numerical results for an oscillating helicopter airfoil under Dynamic Stall conditions. From the knowledge base of the Dynamic Stall Problems, the next step can be envisaged: to control Dynamic Stall. The present discussion will address two different Dynamic Stall control methodologies: the Nose-Droop concept and the application of Leading Edge Vortex Generators (LEVoG's) as examples of active and passive control devices. It will be shown that experimental results are available but CFD-data are only of limited comparison. A lot of future work has to be done in CFD-code development to fill this gap. Here mainly 3D-effects as well as improvements of both turbulence and transition modelling are of major concern.
A new control design methodology is presented here which is based on a nonlinear time-series reference model. It is indicated by highly nonlinear simulations that such designs successfully stabilize troublesome aircraft maneuvers undergoing large changes in angle of attack as well as large electric power transients due to line faults. In both applications, the nonlinear controller was significantly better than the corresponding linear adaptive controller. For the electric power network, a flexible a.c. transmission system (FACTS) with series capacitor power feedback control is studied. A bilinear auto-regressive moving average (BARMA) reference model is identified from system data and the feedback control manipulated according to a desired reference state. The control is optimized according to a predictive one-step quadratic performance index (J). A similar algorithm is derived for control of rapid changes in aircraft angle of attack over a normally unstable flight regime. In the latter case, however, a generalization of a bilinear time-series model reference includes quadratic and cubic terms in angle of attack. These applications are typical of the numerous plants for which nonlinear adaptive control has the potential to provide significant performance improvements. For aircraft control, significant maneuverability gains can provide safer transportation under large windshear disturbances as well as tactical advantages. For FACTS, there is the potential for significant increase in admissible electric power transmission over available transmission lines along with energy conservation. Electric power systems are inherently nonlinear for significant transient variations from synchronism such as may result for large fault disturbances. In such cases, traditional linear controllers may not stabilize the swing (in rotor angle) without inefficient energy wasting strategies to shed loads, etc. Fortunately, the advent of power electronics (e.g., high-speed thyristors) admits the possibility of adaptive control by means of FACTS. Line admittance manipulation seems to be an effective means to achieve stabilization and high efficiency for such FACTS. This results in parametric (or multiplicative) control of a highly nonlinear plant.

In developing a multistage compressor, the stage matching is one of the critical design issues. The mismatching can be often observed even if each stage has been proven good and then used as part of a compression system. A good matching among the stages can be achieved by changing various design parameters (i.e., passage cross sectional areas, blades angles, stagger angles, curvature, solidity, etc.). Therefore, designers need to find out what parameters must be changed and how much. In this study, a method to search the design parameters for optimum stage matching has been used based on an 1-D mathematical model of a compressor, which uses the data obtained from the preliminary test to identify the design parameters. This methodology is applied with a two-stage axial compressor, which was originally designed for a helicopter gas turbine engine. After identifying design parameters using preliminary test data, an optimization process has been employed to achieve the best matching between the stages (i.e., maximum efficiency of the compressor at its operation modes within a given range of the rotor speed under given restrictions for required stall margins and mass flow). 3-D flow calculations have been performed to confirm the usefulness of the corrections based on the 1-D mathematical model. Calculational results agree well with the experimental data in view of the performance characteristics. Some promising results were produced through the methodology proposed in this paper in conjunction with flow calculations.
