Toroidally-wound brushless direct-current (BLOC) machines are compact, highly efficient, and can work across a large magnetic gap. For these reasons, they have been used in pumps, flywheel energy storage systems and left ventricular assist devices among others. The common feature of these systems is a spinning rotor supported by a set of (either mechanical or magnetic) bearings. From the view point of dynamics, it is desirable to increase the first critical speed of the rotor so that it can run at a higher operating speed. The first critical speed of the rotor is determined by the radial stiffnesses of the bearings and the rotor mass. The motor also affects the first critical speed if the rotor is displaced from the rotating center. In this paper, we analytically derive the flux density distribution in a toroidally-wound BLOC machine and also derive the negative stiffness of the motor, based on the assumption that the rotor displacement perturbs the flux density distribution linearly. The estimated negative stiffness is validated by finite element analyses.
Direct torque control (DTC) of induction machines (IM) is a well-known strategy of these drives control which has a fast dynamic and a good tracking response. In this paper a nonlinear DTC of speed sensorless IM drives is presented which is based on input-output feedback linearization control theory. The IM model includes iron losses using a speed dependent shunt resistance which is determined through some effective experiments. A stator flux vector is estimated through a simple integrator based on stator voltage equations in the stationary frame. A novel method is introduced for DC offset compensation which is a major problem of AC machines, especially at low speeds. Rotor speed is also determined using a rotor flux sliding-mode (SM) observer which is capable of rotor flux space vector and rotor speed simultaneous estimation. In addition, stator and rotor resistances are estimated using a simple but effective recursive least squares (RLS) method combined with the so-called SM observer. The proposed control idea is experimentally implemented in real time using a FPGA board synchronized with a personal computer (PC). Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the capability and validity of the proposed control method.
In this paper, vibration characteristics after applying variable speed control to fans with a rated speed used in a power plant are studied by performing experiments and analyzing finite element models. Then the campbell diagram is presented to verify the reason of the abnormal vibration measured from fan structure during variable operation of Forced Draft Fan & Induced Draft Fan. According to results, it is found that amplitude of acceleration increases abruptly when a 2X harmonic component meets the natural frequency of fan rotor. Therefore it is very important thing that investigate exactly dynamic characteristics for the rotor at variable speed zone before applying variable speed control to a rotor with a rated speed.

This paper proposes Fuzzy Speed Estimator using Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) as a adaptive law in Model Reference Adaptive System(MRAS) in order to realize the speed-sensorless control of an induction motor. Fuzzy Speed Estimator estimates the speed of an induction motor with a rotor flux of the reference model and the adjustable model in MRAS. Fuzzy logic controller reduces the error of the rotor flux between the reference model and the adjustable model using the error and the change of error of the rotor flux as the input of FLC. The experiment is executed to verify the propriety and the effectiveness of the proposed speed estimator.
Conventional adaptive speed estimators cannot avoid the influence of the non-linear inductance variation under the saturation conditions. Without speed sensors, it is difficult to identify the inductance variation using a reactive power mode because the model contains a term of the rotor speed. In this paper, we propose a novel speed estimator having hybrid architecture in order to estimate both the rotor speed and the inductance variation simultaneously when the motor flux is saturated. Proposed estimator consists of the error between the flux obtained from the stator voltage equation and the flux estimated from the rotor flux observer. Introducing a new correction term into the estimator increases the estimation ability of the conventional speed estimator even though the motor flux is saturated. The convergence of the speed estimation error is examined by simulation Furthermore, the experimental results show the validity of the proposed method.

SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) drives require the accurate position and speed information of the rotor. These informations are generally provided by a shaft encoder or resolver. High temperature, EMI, and dust may make detection performance deteriorate. Therefore, the elimination of the position and speed sensor is desirable. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive observer using the MRAS(Model Reference Adaptive System) is proposed. The rotor speed and position are estimated by the adaptation law using the real and estimated currents. The stability of the adaptive observer is proved by Lyapunov stability theory. The proposed methods are implemented with TMS320C31 DSP. Experimental results prove that the observer has a good estimation performance of the rotor speed and position despite of the parameter variations and loads, and the speed control can be accomplished in the wide speed range.
In this study, a wind tunnel, that has been developed for experiments of wind turbine rotor blades, has been considered. The deviations of the measurements have been examined after this wind tunnel had been introduced and the measurements on it had been explained. Two different wind turbine rotor blades miniatures have been used for getting better results from the experiments. The accuracy of measurements have been experimented three times repetitively and examined statistically. As a result, wind speed values which this type of wind tunnel and wind turbine rotors need for starting, wind speed in the tunnel, temperature and moisture values, the number of rotor's revolution, and the voltage that is produced in 102 ${\Omega}$ resistance and current values have been determined to be fixed by measurements used. This type of wind tunnel and wind turbine rotor' performance difference and the difference of revolution figures have been determined to be fixed by measurements used.

A rotor dynamic analysis is implemented to confirm the vibration stability of the high speed centrifugal chiller coupled with gear system. As the rotating speed of the centrifugal chiller under investigated is increased up to 17,605 rpm at the pinion rotating part, the bearing instability is getting higher and, furthermore, the rotor-bearing system might experience a few critical speed which lead to system failure due to the excessive vibration. In this study, considering the loading capacity and stability conditions, offset journal bearings are adopted for the pinion rotating system and general cylindrical bearing are used for motor part. From the modal analysis, the system is found to be stable as the synchronous rotating frequency does not come across with any whirl natural frequency and, in addition, the critical damping ratio which shows the damping characteristics of the system are positive over the all operating ranges. From these results the authors confirm the vibration stability of the rotor-bearing system suggested in this study.

This paper presents a mechanical sensorless vector-controlled system with parameter identification by the aid of image processor. Based on the flux observer and the model reference adaptive system method, the proposed sensorless system includes rotor speed estimation and stator resistance identification using flux errors. Since the mathematical model of this system is constructed in a synchronously rotating reference frame, a linear model is easily derived for analyzing the system stability, including motor operating state and parameter variations. Because it is difficult to identify rotor resistance simultaneously while estimating rotor speed, a low-accuracy image processor is used to measure the mechanical axis position for calculating the rotor speed at a steady-state operation. The rotor resistance is identified by the error between the estimated speed using the estimated flux and the calculated speed using the image processor. Finally, the validity of this proposed system has been proven through experimentation.
This paper presents a high-performance control system for Reluctance Synchronous Motor (RSM) drives with direct torque control (DTC). The system consist of stator flux observer, rotor position/speed estimator, torque estimator, two hysteresis band controllers, an optimal switching look-up table, IGBT voltage source inverter, and F240/C31DSP controller by using fully integrated control software. The stator flux observer is based on the combined voltage and current model with stator flux feedback adaptive control that inputs are current and voltage sensing of motor terminal with estimated rotor angle for wide speed range. The rotor position is estimated by the observed stator flux-linkage space vector. The estimated rotor speed can be determinated by differentiation of the rotor position used only in the current model part of the flux observer for a low speed operating area. To prove the suggested control algorithm, we have a simulation and testing at actual experimental system. The developed digitally high-performance position sensorless control system are shown a good motion control response characteristic results and high performance features using 1.0Kw RSM.
