  • This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts tue vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.

  • Recently, tidal current energy conversion is a promising way to harness the power of tides in order to meet the growing demands of energy utilization. A new concept of tidal current energy conversion device, named Vane Tidal Turbine (VTT), is introduced in this study. VTT has several special features that are potentially more advantageous than the conventional tidal turbines, such as propeller type tidal turbines. The purpose of this study on VTT is to analyze the possibility of extracting the hydrokinetic energy of tidal current and converting it into electricity, and evaluate the performance of turbines for various numbers of blades (six, eight and twelve) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). At various tip-speed ratios (TSR), the six-bladed turbine obtains the highest power and torque coefficients, power efficiency is up to 28% at TSR = 1.89. Otherwise, the twelve blade design captures the smallest portion of available tidal current energy at all TSRs. However, by adding more blades, torque extracted from the rotor shaft of twelve-bladed turbine is more uniform due to the less interrupted generation of force for a period of time (one revolution).

  • The Fighter aircraft transmission system consists of a light weight, High Speed Flexible Coupling (HSFC) known as Power Take-Off shaft (PTO) for connecting Engine gearbox (EGB) with Accessory Gear Box (AGB). The HSFC transmits the power through series of specially contoured metallic annular thin flexible plates whose planes are normal to the torque axis. The HSFC operates at high speed ranging from 10,000 to 18,000 rpm. The HSFC is also catered for accommodating larger lateral and axial misalignment resulting from differential thermal expansion of the aircraft engine and mounting arrangement. The contoured titanium alloy flexible plates are designed with a thin cross sectional profile to accommodate axial and parallel misalignment by the elastic material flexure. This paper investigates the effect of misalignment on the transmission characteristics of the HSFC couplings. A mathematical model for the HSFC coupling with misalignment has been developed for analyzing the torque transmission and force interaction characteristics. An extensive testing has been conducted for validating characteristics of the designed coupling under various misalignment conditions. With this the suitability of the model adapted for the design iteration of HSFC development is validated. This method will reduce the design iteration cycles of HSFC and can be extended for the similar development of flexible couplings.

  • Reported experimental and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies have demonstrated significant power augmentation of diffuser shrouded horizontal axis micro wind turbine compared to bare turbine. These studies also found the degree of augmentation is strongly dependent on the shape and geometry of the diffuser such as length and expansion angle. However study flow field over the rotor blades in shrouded turbine has not received much attention. In this paper, CFD simulations of an experimental diffuser shrouded micro wind turbine have been carried out with the aim to understand the mechanisms underpinning the power augmentation phenomenon. The simulations provide insight of the flow field over the blades of bare wind turbine and of shrouded one elucidating the augmentation mechanisms. From the analysis, sub-atmospheric back pressure leading to velocity augmentation at the inlet of diffuser and lowering the static pressure on blade suction sides have been identified as th dominant mechanisms driving the power augmentation. And effective augmentation was achieved for ${\lambda}$ above certain value. For the case turbine it is ${\lambda}$ greater than ${\approx}2$.

  • The commercial tools to simulate the non-linear dynamic characteristics of wind turbine system are various but, the tool take much time to simulate the control algorithm and require many input variables. In this paper, the procedures to derive the simplified 4-degree-of-freedom mathematical model of a 2-MW wind turbine which could be used at the initial design stage of the controller are proposed based on RISO's suggested method. In this model, the 1st tower fore-after bending motion and 1st blade flapping motion are also considered in addition to the rotor-generator rotation motion in the 2-DOF model. The effectiveness of the 4-DOF model is examined comparing with the 2-DOF model and verification of the simplified model is accomplished through modal analysis for whole wind turbine system.

  • High-temperature superconducting rotors offer advantages in terms of output-to-weight ratio and efficiency compared to conventional phase conduction motors or generators. The rotor can be cooled by conduction cooling, which attaches a cryocooler, and by refrigerant circulation, which uses circulating liquid or gas neon, helium and hydrogen. Recent work has focused on environmental issues and on high-temperature superconducting motors cooled with liquid hydrogen that can be combined with fuel cells. However, to ensure smooth supply and return of the cryogenic cooling fluid, a cryogenic rotational coupling between the rotating and stationary parts is necessary. Additionally, the development of a sealing structure to minimize fluid leakage applicable to the coupling is essential. This study describes the design and performance evaluation of a non-contact sealing method, specifically a labyrinth seal, which avoids power loss and heat load caused by friction in contact sealing structures. The seal design incorporates a spiral flow path to reduce leakage using centrifugal force, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to analyze the flow path and rotational speed. A performance evaluation device was configured and employed to evaluate the designed seal. The results of this study will be used to develop a cryogenic rotational coupling with supply and return flow paths for cryogenic applications.

  • This paper is regarding the helicopter flight control law design for the handling quality performance. MIL-F-83300 and ADS-33E specification is used of the helicopter flight handling quality and to meet these requirements, ACAH type controller is required. This paper described the ACAH type controller design and performance evaluations. Helicopter dynamics first developed as nonlinear dynamics including rotor dynamics and then linear model was extracted from hovering to forward flight mode using trim condition. Control law used the model following to meet the handling qualities, the simple inverse model as feed forward gain, decoupling logic and phase model to decouple the axes, and linear model to calculate the coefficients. Handling quality evaluation used the matlab based Conduit tool and verified that Level 1 requirement is satisfied.

  • A wind generator system model includes wind model, rotor dynamics, synchronous generator, power converter, distribution line and infinite bus. This paper investigates the low-Voltage Ride-Through capability of PMSG wind turbine in a variable speed. The drive train of a wind turbine on 2-mass modeling can observe the shaft torsional vibration when the low-voltage occur. To reduce the torsional vibration when the low-voltage occur, this paper designs suppression control algorithm of the torsional vibration and implements simulation. The simulation based on MATLAB/SIMULINK has validated at the transient state of the PMSG and an experiment using 3kW simulator has validated the LVRT control.

  • The tidal current power is the power plant by installing the turbine or rotor where the tidal speed is fast. This system converting the horizontal movement to rotating energy. Tidal power turbine is needed for the dam to utilize the pressure difference. However, tidal current power using the only flow. The tidal current power was evaluated as the impact on the marine environment surrounding was less and the development of eco-friendly way. In this article, we calculated the effect of tidal current turbine on the tidal power generating by mean of CFD. With these calculated results, we checked the possibility of tidal current power using tidal power plant the discharge gate.
