  • Single screw compressors are widely used in the fields of air/gas compression, refrigeration, and chemical fluid transportation systems. A single-screw compressor is composed of a screw rotor and two gate rotors located at both sides. This simple construction enables low rotational speed of the rotor, efficient compression with low noise, low vibration, and long bearing life. Despite these merits, the design method of single-screw compressors is not well known. To accelerate the industrial application of single-screw compressors, a design method using coordinate transformation is presented in this paper, and a tool trajectory is established for machining. Finally, the screw rotor, which is machined using the proposed method, is presented.

  • The knuckle crane mainly consists of six parts such as swing, main boom, outer boom, extension boom, hydraulic rotor and knuckle. And the hydraulic rotor is connected at the end of extension boom has rotor block, rotor body, rotor vane. In this study, we carried out kinematics analysis of the hydraulic rotor block curvature for a knuckle crane. Then, we showed the formula to establish the radius of a circumscribed circle to form the rotor block curvature. Third, we analyzed the stress at each point of the rotor block curvature according to the contact angle. From the result of this study, we designed the rotor block curvature with a proper contact angle for a knuckle crane to guarantee the stability of hydraulic rotor.

  • In this study, we designed tooth profile of the fly-cutter for antisymmetric rotor which is used in screw compressor. In order to verify this profile, we manufactured three different pairs(J46, N46, P46) of antisymmetric rotor using fly-cutter. We got the following conclusions from this study. (1) We obtained better contact condition using 3pairs of rotor which are manufactured by the fly-cutter. (2) We could prevent the cutter interference near bottom point of the robe of screw rotor.

  • Rotor grip is used as a component of rotor system in unmanned helicopter. Instead of usual machining, hot forging process has been considered to improve its proof stress against repeated loading conditions and crash in the farm-field. Die design and forming analysis have been performed according to the conditions such as billet volume, flash, cavity filling, and the distribution of damage during the forming by using FE analysis. In the results of analysis, the possibility of structural failure in the model has not been found because its maximum effective stress is much lower than yield strength of the titanium alloy. In the forging die design, flash has been allowed because of low production in the industrial field. Preform design was studied by using FE-analysis, and its optimal dimension was obtained in the hot forging of rotor grip with titanium alloy.

  • In recent years, flux switching machines (FSMs) have been an attractive research topic owing to their tremendous advantages of robust rotor structure, high torque, and high power capability suitable for intensive applications. However, most of the investigations are focusing on the inner-rotor structure, which is incongruous for direct drive applications. In this study, high torque and power densities of a new 12S-14P outer-rotor permanent magnet (PM) FSM with a DC excitation coil was investigated based on two-dimensional finite element analysis for in-wheel direct drive electric vehicle (EV). Based on some design restrictions and specifications, design refinements were conducted on the original design machine by using the deterministic optimization approach. With only 1.0 kg PM, the final design machine achieved the maximum torque and power densities of 12.4 Nm/kg and 5.93 kW/kg, respectively, slightly better than the inner-rotor HEFSM and interior PM synchronous machine design for EV.

  • The design sensitivity analysis based on the finite element method is presented for the eddy current problem with a voltage source. Since, in this problem, the complex variable is used as the state variable, new approach to the sensitivity calculation for the complex variable system is required. Its result is applied to the design of the rotor slot shape of squirrel cage induction motor. As a analysis model, only one slot pitch of rotor is analyzed by using a Periodic boundary condition. The use of this minimal modelling method leads to much saving of calculation time. The design objective is to obtain the desired slip-torque characteristic. Because the shape of rotor slot has much influence on the slip torque characteristic, the design variables are taken on the interface shape between rotor core and rotor bar. The initial shape of rotor slot is the trapezoidal type with rounding corners. The obtained final shape is quite similar to the double squirrel cage type.

  • Aerial application using an unmanned agricultural helicopter would allow precise and timely spraying. The attitude of a helicopter depends on a number of dynamic variables for roll-balanced flight. Laterally tilting behavior of a helicopter is a physically intrinsic phenomenon while hovering and forwarding. In order to balance the fuselage, the rotor should be counter-tilted, resulting in the biased down-wash. The biased spraying toward right side causes uneven spray pattern. In this study, a raised tail rotor system for the roll-balanced helicopter was studied. Thrust of the tail rotor system was measured and theoretically estimated for the fundamental database of the roll-balanced helicopter design. The estimated tail thrust and roll-moment would be used to design the raising height of tail rotor and roll balancing dynamics. The unmanned agricultural helicopter required the tail rotor thrust of about 39.2 N (4.0 kgf) during hovering with a payload of 235.4 N (24 kgf). A raised tail rotor system would compensate for the physical tilt phenomena. A further attitude control system of helicopter would assist roll-balanced aerial spray application.

  • In this paper, the design sensitivity evaluation based on the 2-dimensional finite clement discretization is presented for the voltage source and eddy current problem. And it is applied to the two shape design problems of the rotor slot of 3-phase squirrel cage induction motors. The first is to increase the starting torque while keeping the rated torque fixed. The other is only to increase the torque at the rated speed while keeping the starting torque fixed. As an optimization method, the Gradient Projection method is used to control casily the torques for various speeds of rotor. One fourth of rotor is analyzed by using a semi-periodic boundary condition. Because the shape of rotor slot has much influence on the slip torque characteristic, the 10 design parameters are taken on the interface between rotor core and rotor bar. The initial shape of rotor slot is the trapezoidal typo with rounding corners.

  • Aerodynamic design optimization of rotor airfoil has been performed with advanced design method for improved aerodynamic characteristics of ONERA airfoils. A multiple response surface method is used to consider various requirements in rotor airfoil design. Shape functions for mean camber line are proposed to extend possible design domain. Numerical simulations are performed using KFLOW, a Navier-Stokes solver with shear stress transport turbulence model. The present design method provides favorable configurations for the high performance rotor airfoil. Resulting optimized airfoils give better aerodynamic performance than the baseline airfoils.
