  • An axial-type turbine design technology is developed. In order to design one-stage turbine, the preliminary design method is applied, and then design parameters are chosen after analyzing gas properties within the turbine passage using the streamline curvature method. Stator blade is designed using C4 profile, and rotor blade is designed using shape parameters. Stator is manufactured as an integral type and rotor is manufactured to be disassembled from the disc for changing blade incidence angle. The output power from the rotor is measured with various RPM and input power. Experimental results show that the maximum efficiency of turbine rotor is obtained on the design point, and the output power is proportionally decreased with the negative incidence angle even the test turbine is a reaction turbine. The efficiency of turbine rotor is decreased to 5% by $7.5^{\cire}$ negative incidence angle from the designed value.

  • The 3-dimensional flow field has been investigated by numerical analysis in a 2.5MW wind turbine blade. Complicated and separated flaw phenomena in the wind turbine blade were captured by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) steady flaw simulation using general-purpose code, CFX and the mechanism of vortex structure behavior is elucidated. The vortical flow field in a wind turbine rotor is dominated by the tip vortex and hub separation vortex. The tip vortex starts to be formed near the blade tip leading edge. As the tip vortex develops in the tangential direction, interacting with boundary layer from the blade tip trailing edge. The hub separation vortex is generated near the blade hub leading edge and develops nearly in the span-wise direction. Furthermore, 3-dimensional blade tip shape has been designed for increasing shrift power and reducing thrust force on the wind turbine blade. It is expected that the behavior of the tip vortex and hub separation vortex plays a major role in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics.

  • In this study, direct-search based optimization methods are applied for blade shape optimization of wind turbines and the optimization performances of several methods including conventional genetic algorithm, micro genetic algorithm and pattern search method are compared to propose a more efficient method. For this purpose, the currently available version of HARP_Opt (Horizontal Axis Rotor Performance Optimizer) code is enhanced to rationally evaluate the annual energy production value according to control strategies and to optimize the blade shape using pattern search method as well as genetic algorithm. The enhanced HARP_Opt code is applied to obtain the optimal turbine blade shape for 1MW class wind turbines. The results from pattern search method are compared with the results from conventional genetic algorithm and also micro genetic algorithm and it is found that the pattern search method has a better performance in achieving higher annual energy production and consistent optimal shapes and the micro genetic algorithm is better for reducing the calculation time.

  • In recent times, turbomolecular pumps (TMPs) have been used frequently to generate and maintain high and clean vacuum. Because of the high-speed rotation of the rotor, its structural safety should be treated as the first design concern. This paper presents the structural analysis and optimization of rotor blades of a TMP. To increase the numerical efficiency in the finite element modeling and analysis, the P-method provided in Pro/ENGINEER was used for simulation. The structural responses for several types of rotor blades were investigated, and the effects of the blade angle, blade length, and round size are thoroughly studied for each type of TMP blade. In addition, structural optimization to reduce and even the maximum stress at each stage of the TMP by changing the size of rounds between the blade and the hub was performed very successfully by using the P-method.

  • BO-105 helicopter applies hingeless rotor hub system and blade root uses a flexure of hingeless rotor hub system. So bending stiffness reinforcement for flexure was conducted for preparation of whirl tower test using BO-105 blade. Bending moment of flexure area was calculated with FE modeling of section shape for stiffness reinforcement of flexure and thickness of composite material for reinforcement was chosen. Flexure bending stiffness reinforcement was conducted and bending stiffness measurement test was performed before and after bending stiffness reinforcement. And the test data are compared with analysis results.

  • In the early stage of helicopter design, an optimal configuration is usually determined after a numerous parametric study about the aerodynamic performance due to geometric variation. In order to improve the aerodynamic performance of a shrouded tail rotor, optimization of the tip clearance gap between blade and shroud, the blade planform shape, and the arrangement of blade spacing is required. In the present study, the aerodynamic performance characteristics of a shrouded tail rotor due to geometric variation was investigated by using an inviscid compressible unstructured mesh flow solver for rotary wings.

  • The purpose of this paper is that investigates the dynamic behavior characteristic of W.T.S(Wind Turbine System) and carries out the evaluation analysis during operating W.T.S. To investigate the dynamic behavior characteristic of W.T.S. the experiments to measure vibration of the blade from the attached accelerometer on the flap and edge section of the blade that is one of the most important elements of dynamic characteristic of W.T.S are performed. Natural frequency and mode shape are calculated with commercial program (STAR MODAL) using the measured vibration acceleration that receives the signal with F.F.T Analyzer from the accelerometer. For validation of these experiments. the finite element analysis is performed with commercial F.E.M Program (ANSYS) on the basis of the natural frequency and mode shape. The results indicate that experimental values have good agreements with the finite element analysis.

  • During helicopter rotor system development process, whirl tower test is conducted basically. For conducting whirl tower test during bearingless hub development process, design new blade or using existing blade with repair or remodeling. Because simple shape and efficient aerodynamic characteristic, BO-105 blade is used for hub system development widely. Originally BO-105 Blade is used for hingeless hub, so flap stiffness and lag stiffness on blade root area is relatively low. So appling BO-105 blade to bearingless hub whirl tower test, root area have to be reinforce. In this paper, suggest reinforcement method of BO-105 blade root area.

Tip and hub diameter of the turbine are 300mm and 206.4mm, respectively. The rotating speed is 1800RPM, and the output power is 1.4kW. The flow coefficient is 1.68 and the reaction factor at mean-line is 0.373. The number of stator and rotor of the turbine are 31 and 41, respectively. Mach number of stator exit flow near hub is 0.164. A test rig is developed for performance test to validate a developed design method. • Numerical optimization techniques combined with a three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes solver are presented to find an optimum shape of a stator blade in an axial compressor through calculations of single stage rotor-stator flow. Governing differential equations are discretized using an explicit finite difference method and solved by a multi-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Baldwin-Lomax model is chosen to describe turbulence. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing are used to accelerate convergence. A steady mixing approach is used to pass information between stator and rotor blades. For numerical optimization, searching direction is found by the steepest decent and conjugate direction methods, and the golden section method is used to determine optimum moving distance along the searching direction. The object of present optimization is to maximize efficiency. An optimum stacking line is found to design a custom-tailored 3-dimensional blade for maximum efficiency with the other parameters fixed.
