Results of theoretical investigations on acoustical properties of hydrodynamic journal bearings are presented. Nonlinear analysis including rotor imbalance is performed for a rotor-bearing system in order to obtain acoustical properties of hydrodynamic journal bearings. Furthermore, a cavitation algorithm, implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition, is adopted to predict cavitation regions in a fluid film. Acoustical properties of hydrodynamic journal bearings are identified through frequency analysis of oil pressure fluctuation calculated from the nonlinear transient analysis. The results show that the acoustical frequency spectra of the fluid film are pure tone spectra, containing the frequency of the shaft rotation and its super-harmonics. The analysis also shows that super-harmonics are predominant at the neighborhood of the fluid film reformation and rupture regions.
The spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tool system, while the rotor has unbalance mass inevitably. A high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to rotating mass unbalance which has harmful effect on many machine tools. Therefore, the balancing procedure to reduce vibration in rotating system is certainly needed for all high-speed spindles. So, it was performed with a spindle-bearing system for CNC automatic lathe by using numerical procedure. The spindle is supported by the angular contact ball bearings and the motor rotor is fixed at the middle of spindle. The spindle-bearing system has been investigated using combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The balancing was performed through influence coefficient method and the comparison was made by whirl responses between before balancing and after balancing. As a result, balancing of simple spindle model reduced whirl orbit magnitude in case of a completely assembled spindle model.
A dynamic analysis and friction loss of non-variable swash plate compressor are studied theoretically. Rotating swash plate and reciprocating pistons are modelled kinematically, and forces and torques acting on rotor-bearing system are analyzed. Then, friction losses on 4 roller bearings, 10 sliding parts between swash plate and shoes, and 10 lubricating surfaces between cylinders and pistons are calculated. On each frictional element of sliding surfaces and roller bearings, the same friction loss is obtained, respectively.
In this paper, an angular self-sensing algorithm is proposed and implemented to a Lorentz force type integrated motor-bearing system. It is based on the principle that the flux linkages of stator windings, calculated from the voltage and torque control current, are the functions of the rotor angle. The tracking angular position error is proven to vanish using the Lyapunov stability method, and the experimental results show that the initial error decays within about 5 seconds. It is found that the resolution of the algorithm remains about 1º over the speed range of 100 to 1000 rpm.
In this paper, an active magnetic bearing(AMB) system is designed and controlled using a digital Proportional-Integral-Derivative(PID) control concept. The plant dynamics consisting of actuator and rigid rotor dynamics are described. A digital PID controller with a global control and a local control concept is designed and implemented using digital signal processor. Some experiments are conducted with each global control and local control concept. These include start-up test, impulse test, whirl response, and generator load test. The experimental results and comparison between those of a global control and a local control indicate that the global control of concept has impressive static and dynamic control performance for the prototype considered. From the whirl test, the developed system set can be controlled within about $\pm10\mu\textrm{m}$ gap variation at the rotational speed of 6000rpm and generate the AC power of frequency of $60\textrm{Hz}$, voltage of 100V and current of 0.8$\textit{A}$.
The threshold of instability for a rigid rotor supported in externally pressurized airlubricated circular or non-circular journal bearings of finite length is theoretically analyzed. The analysis is performed for a bearing having one feeding plane, no recess volume, which is assumed to be a line source, and is based on a first order perturbation of journal center motion about steady state position. And then linearized system dynamic analysis is carried out. Numerical results are given, showing the threshold of instability as a function of supply pressure ratio, feeding parameter and load. It is shown that the region that 2-lobe bearing is more stable than circular bearing exists and whirl ratio of 2-lobe bearing is less than that of the other types of bearing.
Part I of this study analyzed the effects of tilting pad bearing designs to reduce the stiffness of the bearings used in a process high-speed lightweight centrifugal compressor intended for a domestic refinery use. This was done in an attempt to enhance the robustness of its rotordynamic stability against possible aerodynamic cross-coupled stiffness. The bearing design variables reviewed were the clearances, LBPs, LOPs, and preloads. The results showed that there was practically no difference between the LBP and LOP designs in terms of the bearing stiffness, because the compressor rotor was lightweight and the bearings had relatively high preloads. Increasing both the machined and assembled clearances in bearing designs has resulted in the bearing stiffness being greatly reduced. In addition, it has been confirmed that an additional reduction in the bearing stiffness can be obtained for given fixed machined clearances by decreasing the preloads, i.e., by increasing the assembled clearances.
A cone-shaped active magnetic healing spindle system for high speed internal grinding with built-in motor that has 7.5kW power and maximum rotational speed of 50,000 rpm is designed and built. Using cone-shaped AMB(Active Magnetic Bearing) system, the axial rotor dick and magnets of conventional 5-axis actuating design can be eliminated. so this concept of design provides a simple magnetic bearing system. In this paper, the cone-shaped electromagnets are designed by magnetic circuit theory, and a de-coupled direct feedback PID controller is applied to control the coupled magnetic bearings. The designed crone-shaped AMB spindle system is built and constructed with a digital control system, which has TMS320C6702 DSP, 16 bit AD/DA, switching power amplifier and gap sensors. As the AMB system provides high damping ratio eliminating overshoot and resonance speed, this spindle runs up to 40,000 rpm stably with about 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of runout.
In general, industrial rotating machinery have been designed to have critical speed that is above operating speed. But nowadays, they should be operated more than the first critical speed as usual with the trend of high speed and high performance of rotating machinery. Therefore, it is important to predict the accuracy rotordynamic characteristics of the high speed rotating system in advance. In this paper, the results of rotordynamic analysis about FWP(Feed Water Pump) drive turbine rotor are showed. Because the FWP drive turbine analyzed is high speed machinery operated more than the operation speed of conventional FWP drive turbine, Seismic response analysis as well as unbalance response analysis is done in order to improve the reliability of the new turbine rotor-bearing system.
A virtual prototype (VP) model of the rotor-to-stator rub of the rotor system is established to study the nonlinear vibration characteristics. The non-linear bearing stiffness is considered to approximate to an actual system in the model. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a special structure of stator is designed to simulate different kinds of rub condition. The results of experiment are well consistent with the results of simulation by VP. The vibration characteristics of rub-impact are well observed by VP model under different conditions. Based on the validated model, the torsional vibration of rub-impact is discussed. The contribution of this paper is to provide one new approach to study rub-impact problem. Based on the validated VP model, the more research can be done for incident fault identification.
