  • The size of an optical surface can significantly affect the performance of an optical system, and high spatial frequency errors have a greater impact. Therefore, it is crucial to measure the surface figure error with high frequency. To address this, a new method called rotational prism stitching interferometer (RPSI) is proposed in this study. The RPSI is a type of stitching interferometer that enhances spatial resolution, but it differs from conventional stitching interferometers in that it does not require the movement of either the mirror tested or the interferometer itself to obtain sub-aperture interferograms. Instead, the RPSI uses a beam expander and a rotating Dove prism to select particular sub-apertures from the entire aperture. These sub-apertures are then stitched together to obtain a full-aperture result proportional to the square of the beam expander's magnification. The RPSI's effectiveness was demonstrated by measuring a 40 mm diameter spherical mirror using a three-magnification beam expander and comparing the results with those obtained from a commercial interferometer. The RPSI achieved surface testing results with nine times higher sampling density than the interferometer alone, with a small difference of approximately 1 nm RMS.

  • In this study we demonstrate ultrahigh-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography (UHR SD-OCT) with a linear-wavenumber (k) spectrometer, to accelerate signal processing and to display two-dimensional (2-D) images in real time. First, we performed a numerical simulation to find the optimal parameters for the linear-k spectrometer to achieve ultrahigh axial resolution, such as the number of grooves in a grating, the material for a dispersive prism, and the rotational angle between the grating and the dispersive prism. We found that a grating with 1200 grooves and an F2 equilateral prism at a rotational angle of $26.07^{\circ}$, in combination with a lens of focal length 85.1 mm, are suitable for UHR SD-OCT with the imaging depth range (limited by spectrometer resolution) set at 2.0 mm. As guided by the simulation results, we constructed the linear-k spectrometer needed to implement a UHR SD-OCT. The actual imaging depth range was measured to be approximately 2.1 mm, and axial resolution of $3.8{\mu}m$ in air was achieved, corresponding to $2.8{\mu}m$ in tissue (n = 1.35). The sensitivity was -91 dB with -10 dB roll-off at 1.5 mm depth. We demonstrated a 128.2 fps acquisition rate for OCT images with 800 lines/frame, by taking advantage of NVIDIA's compute unified device architecture (CUDA) technology, which allowed for real-time signal processing compatible with the speed of the spectrometer's data acquisition.

  • The study presents the development of a cost-effective CAD/CAM system for metal moulds by use of personal computer. In the personal CAD/CAM system named DKSYS, metal moulds are defined by the operations of basic elements such as prism, pyramid and sphere, plane, rotational body, and surface elements including curved surface. The internal expression of shape elements in the computer is based on the wire model, which is a set of cross-sectional curves of the shape elements. With the addition of OMS system to CAD/CAM system the optimum cutting condition can be selected automatically. After programming NC information with the form definition and the optimum cutting condition, the metallic mould can be formed by transferring cutting information to CNC machine through DNC system. Using a computer for the above process, it is possible to increase the productivity and reduce the cost.

  • Recently, a double-side machining process has been adopted in fabricating a sapphire glass to enhance the manufacturability. Double-side lap grinding (DLG) is one of the emerging processes that can reduce process steps in the fabrication of sapphire glasses. The DLG process uses two-body abrasion with fixed abrasives including pallet. This process is designed to have a low pressure and high rotational speed in order to obtain the required material removal rate. Thus, the temperature is distributed on the DLG platen during the process. This distribution affects the shape of the substrate after the DLG process. The coolant that is supplied into the cooling channel carved in the base platen can help to control the temperature distribution of the DLG platen. This paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics with regard to the heat transfer in a DLG platen, which can be used for fabricating a sapphire glass. The simulation conditions were 200 rpm of rotational speed, 50℃ of frictional temperature on the pallet, and 20℃ of coolant temperature. The five cases of the coolant flow rate (20~36 l/min) were simulated with a tetrahedral mesh and prism mesh. The simulation results show that the capacity of the generated cooling system can be used for newly developed DLG machines. Moreover, the simulation results may provide a process parameter influencing the uniformity of the sapphire glass in the DLG process.

  • The Talbot effect of an elongated circular (EC) grating composed of a line grating and two semicircular gratings with well matched pitches is experimentally presented. As the relative positions between the fixed EC grating and the moving Talbot image of another EC grating or a self Talbot image are one-dimensionally deformed, we can visually observe moire fringes generated by their superposition. Two examples of their applications, that is, the measurement of the wedged angle of a wedged prism and of the fine rotational angle of a mirror are described.cribed.

  • Fine microgroove is the key component to fabricate micro-grating, micro-grating lens and so on. Conventional groove fabrication methods such as etching and lithography have some problems in efficiency and surface integrity. This study deals with the creation of ultra-precision micro grooves using non-rotational diamond tool and CNC machining center. The shaping type machining method proposed in the study allows to produce V-shaped grooves of $40\mu{m}$ in depth with enough dimensional accuracy and surface. For the analysis of machining characteristics in micro V-grooving, three components of cutting forces and AE signal are measured and processed. Experimental results showed that large amplitude of cutting forces and AE appeared at the beginning of every cutting path, and cutting forces had a linear relation with the cross-sectional area of uncut chip thickness. From the results of this study, proposed micro V-grooving technique could be successfully applied to forming the precise optical parts like prism patterns on light guide panel of TFT-LCD.
