In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the vortical flows driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are shown to compare well with the experimental results for the case of infinity Rossby number. The satisfactory agreement between the two results was possible when in the numerics the free surface was treated as a solid wall so that a no-slip condition was applied on the surface. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a large background rotation.

Numerical simulation was applied to investigate the Taylor vortex flow inside the concentric cylinders with a constant radial temperature gradient. The reliability of numerical simulation method was verified by the experimental results of PIV. The radial velocity and temperature distribution in plain and 12-slit model at different axial locations were compared, and the heat flux distributions along the inner cylinder wall at different work conditions were obtained. In the plain model, the average surface heat flux of inner cylinder increased with the inner cylinder rotation speed. In slit model, the slit wall significantly changed the distribution of flow field and temperature in the annulus gap, and the radial flow was strengthen obviously, which promoted the heat transfer process at the same working condition.

The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed for the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The flow field of an annulus has been numerically solved using a finite volume method. The pressure losses and Skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and $0.2{\%}$ aqueous solution of sodium carboximethy1 cellulose (CMC), respectively at inner cylinder rotational speed of $0{\~}600rpm$. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. Consequently the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decreases as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of Taylor vortices.

A numerical study was made of flow behind a circular cylinder in a uniform flow, where the cylinder was rotationally oscillated in time. The temporal behavior of vortex formation was scrutinized over broad ranges of the two externally specified parameters, i.e., the dimensionless rotary oscillating frequency (.110.leq. $S_{f}$.leq..220) and the maximum angular amplitude of rotation (.theta.$_{max}$=15 deg., 30 deg. and 60 deg.). The Reynolds number (Re= $U_{{\inf}D}$.nu.) was fixed at Re=110. A fractional-step method was utilized to solve the Navier-Stokes equations with a generalized coordinate system. The main emphasis was placed on the initial vortex formations by varying $S_{f}$ and .theta.$_{max}$. Instantaneous streamlines and pressure distributions were displayed to show the vortex formation patterns. The vortex formation modes and relevant phase changes were characterized by measuring the lift coefficient ( $C_{L}$) and the time of negative maximum $C_{L}$( $t_{-C}$$_{Lmax}$) with variable forcing conditions.s.tions.s.s.s.

A numerical investigation has been made for flows in an axisymmetric circular cylinder with an impulsively rotating cone located at the bottom of the container. The axisymmetric container is completely filled with a viscous fluid. Major parameter for the present research is only the vertex angle of the cone, otherwise Reynolds number and aspect ratio of the vessel are fixed. Main interest concerns on the vortex breakdown of meridional circulation by impulsive rotation of the cone with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. Numerical method has been used to integrate momentum and continuity equations on a generalized body-fitted grid system. The pattern of vortex breakdown is quite different from that in a right circular cylinder with flat endwall disks. The flow visualization photograph of the preceeding work by Escudier is compared with the present numerical results and the two results are in good agreements. Also flow data are plotted to gain a deep understanding for the present phenomena of the vortex breakdown. The conclusions of this work are clearly explained by the classical theory of the vortex flows in a finite geometry.

Planetary gear box is a power transmitter having very high gear ratio in compact volume. The planetary step-down gear box converts high speed and low torque into low speed and high torque, which is widely used in constructional and industrial machinery field. And, the planetary step-up gear box does vice versa working, which is used as main gear box of large sized wind mill system. The large sized planetary gear box must be performed the normal-opposite rotation test as a its durability test for achieving the reliability. The large sized planetary gear box is composed by triple gear trains of sun gear, carrier, and ring gear. If input power is supplied into one of them and the other is fixed, and then another becomes the output part. In this paper, we designed a new test equipment which can do rapid normal and opposite rotational change with only small displacement by supplying test power using the above rotation (driving) characteristics and hydraulic cylinder and link, and also compared and analyzed with existing method through various experiments.
In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are not show to compare well with the experimental results for the case of the Rossby number 3. Because the numerical results calculate on the assumption that vortex flows are axi-symmetric flow on the other hand real experimental results are show asymmetric flow. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.
The present study has been conducted to predict the temperature distribution in the core of the scraper type ice generator. The analytic model was simplified as the flow in the annular type cylinder, which had an inside wall moving in axial direction due to the rotation of screw and a fixed outside wall. The governing equations were arranged by the method of separation of variables. The results corresponded to the exact solutions of the Bessel function. The qualitative results such as general characteristics of heat transfer in annulus flow from outer cylinder wall to the inside wall were obtained. However the amount of the heat transfer was underestimated as low as $1/5{\sim}1/6$ of the designed value.

This paper is the first investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in the steady bench. For this purpose, several assumptions used in the steady flow evaluation are examined, comparing the measured and/or processed results by the conventional impulse swirl meter with the ones by the real velocity through a particle image velocimetry. The results show that the most questionable assumption is the solid rotation of swirl. With regard to this assumption, the flow characteristics by the conventional methods are distorted seriously by both of the eccentricity of the swirl center and non-uniform velocity profile along the cylinder radial direction. In addition, the cylinder axial velocity distribution also has the great effect on the flow characteristics.
In this study, we propose a method of digital control to drive the vibrating gyroscope using electromagnetic-force. The gyroscope requires accurate vibration control and signal processing for high performance. Conventional PLL based analog controller is not only difficult to manufacture but also weak to outer environment such as temperatures, air pressures and etc. But digital controller using DSP can consistently maintain the cylinder vibration and perform digital signal processing regardless of disturbance. DSP's PWM function was utilized to control the vibration, and rotation-detecting algorithm was developed. Finally, the controller was verified by simulation and experiment using rotation-rate table.
