Optimization of a Savonius hydrokinetic turbine for performance improvement: A comprehensive analysis of immersion depth and rotation direction

  • The turbine system converts the kinetic energy of water flow to electricity by rotating the rotor in a restricted waterway between the seabed and free surface. A turbine system's immersion depth and rotation direction are significantly critical in the turbine's performance along with the shape of the rotor. This study has investigated the hydrodynamic performance of the Savonius hydrokinetic turbine (SHT) according to the immersion depth and rotation direction using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The instantaneous torque, torque coefficient, and power coefficients are calculated for the immersion ratios Z/D ranging [0.25, 3.0] and both clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) rotations. A flow visualization around the rotor is shown to clarify the correlation between the turbine's performance and the flow field. The CFD simulations show that the CCW rotation produces a higher power at shallow immersion, while the CW rotation performs better at deeper immersion. The immersion ratio should be greater than the minimum of Z/D=1.0 to obtain the maximum power production regardless of the rotation direction.

Immediate Effect of Serratus Posterior Inferior Muscle Direction Taping on Thoracolumbar Junction Rotation Angle During One Arm Lifting in the Quadruped Position

  • Background: The serratus posterior inferior (SPI) muscle originates from the spinous process of T11-L2 and inserts at the lower border of the 9-12th ribs. This muscle is involved in thoracolumbar rotation and stability. Several positions can be used to improve trunk stability; the quadruped position is a good position for easily maintaining a neutral spine. In particular, during one arm lifting, various muscles act to maintain a neutral trunk position, and the SPI is one of these muscles. If trunk stability is weakened, uncontrolled trunk rotation may occur at this time. Tape can be used to increase trunk stability. There have been no studies on the effect of taping applied to the SPI muscle on thoracolumbar junction (TLJ) stability. Objects: This study compared the TLJ rotation angle between three different conditions (without taping, transverse taping, and SPI muscle direction taping). Methods: Thirty subjects were recruited to the study (18 males and 12 females). The TLJ rotation angle was measured during one arm lifting in a quadruped position (ALQP). Two taping methods (transverse and SPI muscle direction taping) were applied, and the TLJ rotation angle was measured in the same movement. Results: SPI muscle direction taping significantly reduced TLJ rotation compared to that without taping (p < 0.001) and with transverse taping (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference in the TLJ rotation angle between transverse taping and SPI muscle direction taping (p < 0.017). Conclusion: SPI muscle direction taping reduces the TLJ rotation angle during ALQP. Therefore, SPI muscle direction taping is one method to improve TLJ stability and reduce uncontrolled TLJ rotation during ALQP.

  • The field of robots is being widely accepted as a new technology today. Many robots are produced continuously to impart amusement to people. Especially the robot which operates with a wheelbarrow was enough of a work of art to arouse excitement in the audiences. All the wheelbarrow robots share the same technology in that the direction of roll and pitch are acting as balance controllers, allowing the robots to maintain balance for a long period by continuously moving forward and backward. However one disadvantage of this technology is that they cannot avoid obstacles in their way. Therefore movement in sideways is a necessity. For the control of rotation of yawing direction, the angle and direction of rotation are adjusted according to the velocity and torque of rotation of a motor. Therefore this study aimed to inquire into controlling yawing direction, which is responsible for rotation of a robot. This was followed by creating a simulation of a wheelbarrow robot and equipping the robot with a yawing direction controlling device in the center of the body so as to allow sideway movements.

Cervico-ocular Reflex in Bilateral Labyrinthectomized Cats (양측 전정절제(前庭切除) 가묘(家猫)의 경안구반사(頸眼球反射))

  • The effect of cervical proprioceptors on the control of eye movement and body posture was examined in unanesthetized labyrinthine intact and bilateral labyrinthectomized cats. Cervico-ocular reflex(COR) was elicited by stimulation of the cervical proprioceptors by means of sinusoidal rotation of head or body in the darkness. The following results were obtained: 1) In labyrinthine intact cats, sinusoidal rotation of the whole body elicited compensatory eye movement(vestibulo-ocular reflex: VOR); the direction of eye movement was opposite to the direction of head rotation. 2) Anticompensatory eye movement was observed by sinusoidal rotation of the body with head fixed in labyrinthine intact cats; the direction of eye movement was the same as the direction of head rotation. 3) Compensatory eye movement was observed by sinusoidal rotation of the head with body fixed or sinusoidal rotation of the body with head fixed in both acute and chronic bilateral labyrinthectomized cats. These results suggest that the cervical proprioceptors are important in the control of ocular movement and posture in the bilateral labyrintectomized cats, although they are questionable in labyrinthine intact cats.

Direction Dependence of the Perception of the Support Rotation While Quiet Standing (정적서기 상태에서 지지면 회전 인지능력의 방향별 차이)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of direction (pitch and roll) on the perception of support surface rotation while standing. Thirty young healthy subjects participated in this study. Support surface was rotated at an unexpected instant in a very slow speed (0.2 deg/s). The direction of support surface rotation was randomly chosen among pitch (forward and backward) and roll (right and left) directions. The experiment was performed with eyes open and closed. Perception performance was evaluated by the perception threshold, defined as the rotation angle of the surface at the instant when a subject recognized that the support surface was moving. Results showed that the perception threshold was smaller for roll directions than pitch directions irrespective of vision and gender (p < 0.01). This indicates that the perception of support surface rotation is more sensitive in roll direction than in pitch direction. Among three sensory functions related to postural perception, the effect of vestibular and visual functions on the direction difference of the perception should be little because of the very slow surface rotation and independence on visual conditions. Therefore, the direction dependence of perception would have been affected mainly by the somatosensory function.

  • The direction of the cutting tool plays a critical role in elliptical vibration cutting(EVC) where the cutting tool cuts workpiece in a trochoidal motion. In this study, EVC cutting device was developed using two parallel piezoelectric materials and it was observed that the rotation direction of the tool reverses as the EVC device undergoes resonance at which either flexural(cutting direction) or longitudinal( thrust direction) mode shapes occurs. To analytically explain reversal of the rotation direction, kinematic motion analysis of the tool was modified to incorporate amplification of the vibration amplitude and phase introduced by resonance. It successfully demonstrated, through Matlab simulation, reversal of the rotation direction of the cutting tool as the excitation frequency increases beyond resonance frequencies at which either flexural or longitudinal vibration occurs.

Difference in Rotation Pattern of Toric Soft Contact Lenses with Different Axis Stabilization Design (축 안정화 디자인이 상이한 토릭소프트콘택트렌즈의 회전 양상 차이)

  • Purpose: It was investigated whether two different stabilization designs of toric contact lenses changed the rotational axis and degree of toric lenses according to body posture and gaze direction in the present study. Methods: Toric soft contact lenses with Lo-Torque$^{TM}$ design and ASD design (accelerated stabilized design) were fitted on 52 eyes aged in 20s-30s. Then, rotational degree was measured at the five gaze directions including front gaze and the lying position. Results: When gazing the front and vertical directions in the upright posture, lens was much rotated to nasal side for the Lo-Torque$^{TM}$ design and temporal side for the ASD design. When gazing horizontal direction, both design lenses were rotated against to the gaze direction. Rotation degree was the smallest at superior direction gaze and the largest at nasal gaze. In case of the rotation degree less than $5^{\circ}$, Lo-Torque$^{TM}$ design was more frequent when gazing front and vertical directions, and ASD design was more frequent when gazing horizontal direction. In addition, the lens with Lo-Torque$^{TM}$ design was lesser rotation degree than with ASD design immediately after lying. On the other hand, the lens with ASD design was lesser rotation degree than with Lo-Torque$^{TM}$ design 1 minute later after lying. Conclusions: This study confirmed that axis rotation of the lens induced by gaze direction and posture was different according to axis stabilization design during wearing toric soft contact lens.

  • AE-CORDIC improves the CORDIC operation speed with a rotation direction pre-computation algorithm. Its CORDIC iteration stages consist of non-predictable rotation direction states and predictable rotation stages. The non-predictable stages are replaced with lookup-table which has smaller hardware size than CORDIC iteration stages. The predictable stages can determine rotation direction with the input angle and simple encoder. In this paper, a rotation direction pre-computation algorithm with input angle encoder is proposed. and AE-CORDIC which have optimized Lookup-table is compared with the P-CORDIC algorithm. Hardware size, delay, and SQNR of the AE-CORDIC are verified with Samsung 0.18㎛ technology and Synopsys design compiler when input angle bit length is 16.

Development of Ventilator without Power using Air Flow (공기흐름을 이용한 무동력 환풍장치 개발)

  • The studies on the efficient ventilator to reduce fire and save energy have been proceeded actively. The purpose of this paper is to design a ventilator used in residential wood stove. The ventilator consists of rotation and support part, and it is operated by natural wind without power. The shape of rotation part of the ventilator is like airfoil to reinforce pressure drop. We designed direction controller for the rotation part to track the direction of wind continuously. The rotation and support part have point-contact each other to minimize a friction. We verify the properties of the proposed ventilator though simulation and experiment. The results show the proposed ventilator can exhaust safely combustion gas of the stove more than other ventilator.

Effect of 8 Direction Incline and Rotation Exercise on Pain and Dynamic Balance in the Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain (8방향 경사와 회전 운동이 만성요통환자의 통증과 동적균형에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 8 direction incline and rotation exercise on pain and dynamic balance in the patients with chronic low back pain(CLBP). 20 patients who were diagnosed with CLBP were included for the study. 10 patients(experimental group) were treated by modality{Hot Pack(H/P), Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation(TENS), Ultra Sound(U/S)} and then performed 8 direction incline and rotation exercise. The other 10 patients(control group) were only treated by modality. The therapeutic intervention was taken three times a week for 6 weeks. Dynamic balance was assessed by Star Excursion Balance Test(SEBT) and pain was assessed by Visual Analog Scale(VAS). VAS scores of both groups were decreased. However, the experimental group was more significantly decreased than the control group. The dynamic balance of both groups was significantly increased in anterior, posterior, medial, lateral direction. But experimental group was more significantly increased than the control group. In conclusion, 8 direction incline and rotation exercise was effective on pain and dynamic balance in CLPB.
