  • In reverse engineering (RE) sustems, the quality of the data aquisition process is crucial to the accuracy of the reverse engineered three dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) model. However, these tasks are predominantly done manually, and little work has been done to improve the efficiency of scanning by determining the minimum number of scans and the optimal scanning directions. In this paper, new scanning and registration methods using tooling balls are developed to assist in determining the optimal parameter for these processes. When the object to scanned has no concavity, attaching path of the object and its bounding rectangle are used for optimal scanning and registration. Then minimum number of tooling balls and their positions are calculated automatically. In the case of concave parts, the scanning plan should include a complete scan of the concave area. With the surface normal vector and the scanning direction, the minimum degree of rotating the part can be calculated. But the maximum rotation should be restricted in order to prevent occlusion of the part. Finally tow sample part ar scanned based on the proposed methods and the results are discussed.

  • 3D object recognition using only 2D images is a difficult work because each images are generated different to according to the view direction of cameras. Because SIFT algorithm defines the local features of the projected images, recognition result is particularly limited in case of input images with strong perspective transformation. In this paper, we propose the object recognition method that improves SIFT algorithm by using several sequential images captured from rotating 3D object around a rotation axis. We use the geometric relationship between adjacent images and merge several images into a generated feature space during recognizing object. To clarify effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we keep constantly the camera position and illumination conditions. This method can recognize the appearance of 3D objects that previous approach can not recognize with usually SIFT algorithm.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • In this study a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method is utilized to analyze the complex lubrication performance of a spiral groove seal, which is being designed and developed for a high-speed flying object application operating at a high-speed of over 50,000 rpm. As at the equilibrium seal clearance the axial stiffness of the seal is predicted to have almost such a constant high value of $1.04\times10^8\;N/m$ regardless of a rotating speed, the seal is expected to maintain a stable thickness of lubrication film under a certain external excitation acting. Also, as even at an ultra high-speed of 80,000 rpm the axial damping of the seal is shown to have a rotatively high value of 5,775 N-s/m, the dynamic stability of the seal system at the axial degree of freedom is assured well enough.

  • In light of recently developed 3D printers for rapid prototyping, there is increasing attention on the 3D scanner as a 3D data acquisition system for an existing object. This paper presents a prototypical 3D scanner based on a striped laser light image. In order to solve the problem of shadowy areas, the proposed 3D scanner has two cameras with one laser light source. By using a horizontal rotation table and a rotational arm rotating about the latitudinal axis, the scanner is able to scan in all directions. To remove an additional optical filter for laser light pixel extraction of an image, we have adopted a differential image method with laser light modulation. Experimental results show that the scanner's 3D data acquisition performance exhibited less than 0.2 mm of measurement error. Therefore, this scanner has proven that it is possible to reconstruct an object's 3D surface from point cloud data using a 3D scanner, enabling reproduction of the object using a commercially available 3D printer.

  • One of the advantages of computer graphics is that it enables to view an object on different viewpoints and different angles. Therefore, a computer graphics system should be able to rotate an arbitrary object by an arbitrary angle about an arbitrary axis. This is usually done by rotating vertices that represent an object and connecting them. Hence an image may have many vertices, it is important to be able to rotate each of them quickly. Therefore, this paper is interested in a rotation matrix computation method that consists of the smallest number of computational steps. This pater proposes an algorithm that computes rotation matrix to rotate a 3 dimensional image about an arbitrary axis quickly.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a practical image inspection system that could recognize it correctly, endowing flexibility to the productive field, although the same object for work will be changed in the size and rotated. In this experiment, it selected a fighter, rotating the direction from $30^{\circ}\;to\;45^{\circ}$ simultaneously while changing the size from 1/4 to 1/16, as an object inspection without using another hardware for exclusive image processing. The invariant moments, Hu has suggested, was used as feature vector moment descriptor. As a result of the experiment the image inspection system developed from this research was operated in real-time regardless of the chance of size and rotation for the object inspection, and it maintained the correspondent rates steadily above from 94% to 96%. Accordingly, it is considered as the flexibility can be considerably endowed to the factory automation when the image inspection system developed from this research is applied to the productive field.

  • Purpose: In this work we suggested a grating chart of vision test which could be used to measure the sense of distance and motion of object. Methods: A couple of gratings with periodic structure were fabricated. Through a lens the grating images showing geometrical shapes were projected on a vision test chart in order to form a new grating chart of vision test. In rotating and translating the gratings the examinee perceived the variation of position of gratings by the variation of the sense of distance and motion. Results: The results of the sense of distance and motion measured in rotating and translating the gratings showed the average errors of ~2.98% and ~1.73% at $\theta=15^{\circ}$ respectively compared to calculated values. Conclusions: The grating chart of vision test suggested in this work can be used as a new test chart that lets an examinee perceive a sense of distance and motion of object.

  • A large amount of image data sets are required for image deep learning, and there are many differences in the method of obtaining images and constructing image data sets depending on the type of object. In this paper, we presented a method of constructing an image data set for deep learning and analyzed the performance that varies depending on the object to be tracked. We took a video by rotating the object, and then created a data set by segmenting the video using the proposed data set construction method. As a result of performance analysis, detection rate was more than 95%, and detection rate of objects with little change in shape was higher performance. It is considered that it is effective to use the data set construction method presented in this paper for a situation in which it is difficult to obtain image data and to track an object with little change in shape within a video.

  • The Holographic Particle Velocimetry system can be a promising optical tool for the measurements of three dimensional particle velocities. In this study, the holographic particle velocimetry system was used to measure the sizes and velocities of droplets produced by a commercial full cone spray nozzle. As a preliminary validation experiment, the velocities of glass beads on a rotating disk were measured with uncertainty analysis to identify the sources of all relevant errors and to evaluate their magnitude. The error of the particle velocity measured by the holographic method was 0.75 ㎧, which was 4.5% of the known velocity estimated by the rotating speed of disk. The spray droplet velocities ranged from 10.3 to 13.3 ㎧ with average uncertainty of ${\pm}$ 1.6 ㎧, which was ${\pm}$ 14% of the mean droplet velocity. Compared with relatively small uncertainty of velocity components in the normal direction to the optical axis, uncertainty of the optical axis component was very high. This is due to the long depth of field of droplet images in the optical axis, which is inherent feature of holographic system using forward-scattering object wave of particles.
