  • A numerical analysis using 2-D unsteady compressible program is conducted to explain characteristics of rotating stall such as rotating speed and number of stall cells in an one-stage axial compressor. Unlike an axial compressor which has only a rotor, in one-stage axial compressor a rotating stall is generated by rotor/stator interaction and tack pressure rising without any artificial disturbance and modeling. As a back pressure is raised, the separation of suction side at blades is increased uniformly, but because of the discrepancy of blockage effect by stator, the disturbances are generated to form a stall cell. Once the stall cell is formed, regularly the stall cell are rotating through rotor blades. When the speed of rotor is design speed the rotating speed of stall cell is $83.3\%$ of rotor rotating speed. When the speed of rotor is $80\%$ of design speed, the speed of rotating stall is $88.2\%$ of rotor speed. The number of generated stall cell are also varied for rotor speed and back pressure.

  • This numerical study conducts the modeling and the hover performance analyses of coaxial co-rotating rotor(or stacked rotor), using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The important design parameters such as the index angle and axial spacing for the coaxial co-rotating rotor are varied in this simulation study. The coaxial co-rotating rotor is trimmed using the torque value of the upper rotor of the previous coaxial counter-rotating rotor or the total thrust value of the previous coaxial counter-rotating rotor in hover. The maximum increases in the rotor thrust is 1.84% for the index angle of -10° when using the torque trim approach. In addition, the maximum decreases in the rotor power is 4.53% for the index angle of 20° with the thrust trim method. Thus, the present study shows that the hover performance of the coaxial co-rotating rotor for e-VTOL aircraft can be changed by the index angle.

  • To reduce the drag rise on the advancing helicopter rotor blade tips, the tip of the blade is modified to have sweep, anhedral and pretwist. The equations of motion of rotor blade with these tip angles were derived using Hamilton principle, programmed using FORTRAN and named as ARMDAS(Advanced Rotorcraft Multidisplinary Design and Analysis System). Rotating frequency analysis of rotor blades with swept tipe was performed that is necessary in conceptual and preliminary design phases of the helicopter design. Vibration analysis of non-rotating blades was also accomplished and compared with MSC/NASTRAN resutls for the basis of comparison with the vibration test data. The rotating frequency analysis of blades with an actual rotor blade data was also performed to verify coded program and to check the possibility of a resonance of an actual rotor blade at the specific rotating speed.

  • The most important component of wind turbine is rotor blades. The developing method of wind turbine was focused on design of rotor blade. By the way, the design of a rotating body is more decisive process in order to adjust the performance of wind turbine. For instance, the design allows the designer to specify the wind characteristics derived by topographical map. The iterative solver is then used to adjust one of the selected inputs so that the desired rotating performance which is directly related to power generating capacity and efficiency is achieved. Furthermore, in order to save the money for manufacturing the rotor blades and to decrease the maintenance fee of wind power generation plant, while decelerating the cut-in speed of rotor. Therefore, the design and manufacturing of rotating body is understood as a substantial technology of wind power generation plant development. The aiming of this study is building-up the profitable approach to designing of rotating body as a system for the wind power generation plant. The process was conducted in two steps. Firstly, general designing and it’s serial testing of rotating body for voltage measurement. Secondly, the serial test results above were examined with the CFD code. Then, the analysis is made on the basis of amount of electricity generated by rotor-blades and of cut-in speed of generator.

  • The mass balancing of rotors is an integral part of the study practice of the rotor dynamics. Any machine with rotating components is considered to be rotating machine. The part of a rotating machine that rotates in normal operation is generally reffered to as a rotor. A rotor is flexible if it deforms when the machine is operating at any speed up to its maximum design speed. Otherwise, the rotor is rigid. The general Purpose of the study of rotor dynamics is to increase understanding of rotor vibration phenomena and thus provide a means for controlling or eliminating these vitrations. As the efficiency of rotating machinery has been increased through reduced weight and increased speed, which implies increasement of rotor flexibility, the control of rotor vibration has become essential. Thus, the study and practice of rotor dynamaics has taken on an increasingly important role in recent years. Therefore many workers have studied about this and introduced a few balancing methods of flexible rotor, which can be classified mainly in following four sorts, 1. Polar plotting methed 2. Modal balancing method 3. Influence coefficient method 4. Unified balancing approach In this paper practical theories of rotor dynamics related to flexible rotor balancing have been reviewed and confirmed the calculation results of flexible balancing of typical rotor, as an example, respectively

  • A simple equation to find a optimum speed of desiccant rotor is presented in this theoretical study. Usually the determination of optimum speed of desiccant rotor requires tedious and lengthy procedures by solving governing differential equations with many complicated parameters. The determining equation of optimal rotating speed is derivated from governing differential equations with three linearization assumptions, which simplify temperature profile linear along the desiccant rotor depth, psychrometric chart within a proper range, and relative humidity-sorption capacity relation. This study shows that the dominant parameters of optimal rotating speed of desiccant rotor are NTU, flow velocity, desiccant rotor depth, and temperature different between dehumidification and regeneration. The comparison shows the good agreement between complicated calculation results and simple theoretical equation prediction.

  • This paper aims to present the design and performance evaluation of a counter-rotating tidal turbine using CFD and to compare its performance with single rotor. The device scale is 10kW and the rotating part consists of two rotors which rotate in opposite direction. Compared with conventional single rotor, the counter-rotating system shows higher power efficiency at high stream velocity but lower efficiency at low stream velocity. The added counter-rotated rotor together helps improve the energy absorption capacity but has influence on the upstream rotor that reduces its performance. In terms of power capture, the designed counter-rotating tidal turbine is more advantageous in high speed tidal condition.

  • Experiments were done for the three dimensional unsteady flow in a counter-rotating axial flow fan under peak efficiency operating condition. Flow fields in a counter rotating axial flow fan were measured at cross-sectional planes of the upstream and downstream of each rotor. Cross sectional flow patterns were investigated through the acquired data by the 45$^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire. Flow characteristics such as tip vortex, secondary flow and tip leakage flow were confirmed through axial, radial and tangential velocity vector plot. It has been found that the radial and tangential velocity components disappeared, while the axial velocity component highly increased as soon as the tip vortex was generated. It has been observed that secondary flow and turbulence intensity which were increased by the front rotor were dissipated passing through the rear rotor. As the result the energy loss of the counter rotating axial flow fan decreased at the downstream of rear rotor. Also, it has been verified that tip vortex pattern of the rear rotor was dampened because the tip vortex generated by front rotor was mixed with that of the rear rotor.

  • In the case of the general helicopter among rotorcraft, length of the rotor blade for thrust-generation is longer than that of fuselage and tail rotor is required in order to compensate moment of the fuselage. For those reasons, enough space for take-off and landing should be secured and an accessibility for building is low. Also, the accidents caused by tail rotor occur frequently. However, the case of counter-rotating has merits that tail rotor is unnecessary as well as length of the rotor blade can be shortened but has a weakness that the weight of body is increased. In the present study, aerodynamic force measurement on single rotor system equipped with NACA0012 airfoil, which has aspect ratio of 6 and chord length of 35.5 mm, was carried out. And measurement was conducted with blade which has a half size of the former blade by using single motor counter-rotating. Aerodynamic force measurement was acquired by using 6-component balances and coefficients of thrust and power were derived along the pitch angle varying from 0$^{\circ}$ to 90$^{\circ}$ with the increment of 10$^{\circ}$. Those aerodynamic force data will be utilized for the design and production of brand-new counter-rotating rotor blade system which has same thrust with single blade system and provides a good accessibility to building by reducing its blade length.

  • The slip frequency is included in feature frequency for fault diagnosis of rotor bar, so rotating rotor speed is needed. In this study, rotor slot harmonic(RSH) method is suggested for speed estimation of induction motor. When the rotor is rotating, motor current signal include the harmonic signal of back-emf voltage related with number of rotor slot. So from the power spectrum of current signal, the rotor speed can be founded. This method of rotor speed estimation gives the slip frequency, and the feature frequency of rotor bar fault can be calculated. Comparing with stroboscope speed meter, the error rate of suggested method is less than 0.1[%].
