  • The increase of the spindle speed to enhance the productivity in ring spinning processes has been limited by yarn tension and heat generation of the traveller/ring. The main causes of yarn tension are 1) the force added directly to the yarn by the rotation of the spindle and 2) the centrifugal force exerted by the yarn balloon generated by traveller rotation. The dominant causes of heat generation are 1) the friction between the ring and traveller and 2) the friction between the traveller and yarn. These factors cause yarn end-breaks and heat damage. In the case of the staple yarn manufacturing process for PET (polyester) and nylon (a heat plasticity material), the rotational speed of the ring spinning system has deteriorated to 10,000rpm. The objective of this study was to develop a rotating ring which has dynamic stability, high productivity and a simple structure to overcome the limitations of the conventional fixed ring/traveller system. The results of this study revealed that the spinning tension could be reduced by 67.8% using the newly developed rotating ring.

  • In this paper, the equations of motion by which the natural vibration of rotating thick ring can be analyzed accurately are presented. These equations are derived from the theory of finite deformation and the principle of virtual work. The effects of variation in curvature across the ring cross-section can be considered in these equations. The ring models are called as thick ring model and thin ring model respectively as the effects of variation in curvature are considered or neglected. The radial displacement of ring which is rotating at constant angular velocity is determined by a non-linear equation derived from the principle of virtual work. The equations of the in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations at disturbed state are also formulated from the principle of virtual work. They can be expressed as the combination of the radial displacement at the steady state and the disturbed displacements about the steady state. The natural vibrations of rings with different thickness are analyzed by using the presented ring models and 3-dimensional finite element method to verify accuracy of the presented equations of motion. Its results are compared and discussed.

  • In this paper, frequency analysis has been done for functionally graded cylindrical shell with ring supports using Sander's shell theory. The vibrations of rotating cylindrical shells are analyzed for different physical factors. The fundamental natural frequency is investigated for different parameters such as: ratios of length-to-diameter ring supports. By increasing different value of height-to-radius ratio, the resulting backward and forward frequencies increase and frequencies decrease on increasing height-to-radius ratio. The frequencies for different position of ring supports are obtained in the form of bell shaped. The backward frequencies increases and forward frequencies decrease on increasing the rotating speed. The results generated furnish the evidence regarding applicability of present shell model and also verified by earlier published literature.

  • Based on novel Galerkin's technique, the theoretical study gives a prediction to estimate the vibrations of FG rotating cylindrical shell. Terms of ring supports have been introduced by a polynomial function. Three different laws of volume fraction are utilized for the vibration of cylindrical shells. Variation frequencies with the locations of ring supports have been analyzed and these ring supports are placed round the circumferential direction. The base of this approach is an approximate estimation of eigenvalues of proper functions which are the results of solutions of vibrating equation. Each longitudinal wave number corresponds to a particular boundary condition. The results are given in tabular and graphical forms. By increasing different value of height-to-radius ratio, the resulting backward and forward frequencies increase and frequencies decrease on increasing length-to-radius ratio. There is a new form of frequencies is obtained for different positions of ring supports, which is bell shaped. Moreover, on increasing the rotating speed, the backward frequencies increases and forward frequencies decreases.

  • This paper proposes a new approach for the shape design of the rotating outer-ring type epicycloid plate gear by using instant velocity center. First, this method defines the instant velocity centers for rotating outer-ring type epicycloid plate gear and calculates the contact angles and the contact points by using the geometric relationships and the kinematic properties of the reducer. Second, it generates the full shape of the cycloidal plate gear. Finally, the paper develops CAD-program for construction of the design automation using the proposed method. This CAD-program is developed to have the functions of the friendly user interface and the simulation of the real operation for the cycloid reducer.

  • Nonlinear models for a thin ring rotating at a constant speed are developed. The geometric nonlinearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton’s principle, the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from the nonlinear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the behavior of the rotating ring.

  • In this paper, we present the principle of virtual work, from which the exact non-linear equations of motion of a rotating ring can be derived, by using the theory of finite deformation. For a thin ring of which the effect of variation in curvature across the cross-section is neglected, the radial displacement and the extensional stress are determined from the principle of virtual work at the steady state where the ring is rotating with a constant angular velocity. And also we formulate systematically the governing equations concerned to the in-plane vibrations and the out-of-plane vibrations at the disturbed state by using the principle of virtual work which is expressed with the disturbed displacements about the steady state. The formulated governing equations are classified by four models along the cases of considering or neglecting all or partly the secondary effects of flexural shear, rotary inertia, circumferential extension, and twist inertia. The natural vibrations of thin rings are analyzed, and its results are compared and discussed.

  • Free non-linear vibration of a rotating thin ring with a constant speed is analyzed when the ring has both the in-plane and out-of-plane motions. The geometric non-linearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton's principle, the coupled non-linear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from three non-linear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the non- linear behavior more precisely.

  • Recently rotating machines have became high speed and high Power and light weight. Bearings are one of the main components which influence power loss and stability of rotating machines. Appropriate bearing should be selected with considering characteristics of rotating machine. Floating ring journal bearing(FIB) consists of an inner film and outer film, and possess high damping and stability. FJB has been for adopted into turbocharger for the high stability at high operating speed. (omitted)
