The result of this experiment which are conducted, to improve the cultivation technology of Alisma plantago, to increase its quantity and to contribute for stable production with Yongiun local group by examining the optimal planting density and transplanting period of double cropping of Alisma plantago in the southern region. The characters of plant height, leaf width and length tend to be reduced as the seeding period is later by the order of the 10th, 20th and 30th of July. The period required for flowering is reduced as the transplanting period is later and dense planting is applied. Plant height, the number of leaves and yield of dry root have much quantity at the dense planting density of 20$\times$ 15cm as they are transplanted later in the 30th of August or the 10th of September, but they are rather less in sparse planting density of 20$\times$25cm or 20$\times$35cm.
Ginseng has been used as a general tonic agent to invigorate the human body as an adaptogenic agent. In a previous report, we have shown that ginseng contains a novel glycolipoprotein called gintonin. The main function of gintonin is to transiently enhance intracellular free $Ca^{2+}$$[Ca^{2+}]_i$ levels in animal cells. The previous method for gintonin isolation included multiple steps using organic solvents. In the present report, we developed a simple method for the preparation of crude gintonin from ginseng root as well as stem and leaf, which produced a higher yield of gintonin than the previous one. The yield of gintonin was 0.20%, 0.29%, and 0.81% from ginseng root, stem, and leaf, respectively. The apparent molecular weight of gintonin isolated from stem and leaf through sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was almost same as that from root but the compositions of amino acids, carbohydrates or lipids differed slightly between them. We also examined the effects of crude gintonin from ginseng root, stem, and leaf on endogenous $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^-$ channel (CaCC) activity of Xenopus oocytes through mobilization of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$. We found that the order of potency for the activation of CaCC was ginseng root > stem > leaf. The $ED_{50}$ was $1.4{\pm}1.4$, $4.5{\pm}5.9$, and $3.9{\pm}1.1$ mg/mL for root, stem and leaf, respectively. In the present study, we demonstrated for the first time that in addition to ginseng root, ginseng stem and leaf also contain gintonin. Gintonin can be prepared from a simple method with higher yield of gintonin from ginseng root, stem, and leaf. Finally, these results demonstrate the possibility that ginseng stem and leaf could also be utilized for ginstonin preparation after a simple procedure, rather than being discarded.
Transformed roots of Schisandra chinensis were obtained following co-cultivation of in vitro cultivated plantlet segments with Agrobaterium rhizogens ATCC15834. This root was examined for its growth and gomisin J contents under various culture conditions. Among the six basal culture media tested, WPM (Lloyd & McCown, 1980) medium supplemented with 5% sucrose was the best roots growth 6.2 (g D.W/flask) and gomisin J accumulation 1.56 $(X10^{-3}\;ug/g\;D.W)$. Initial inoculum size correlated with the yield of biomass while gomisin J contents was not affect. Gomisin J production was influenced by the initial sucrose concentration and the highest production yield was achieved at the concentration of 7%. The optimal shaking speeds for roots growth and gomisin J production was 120 and 140 rpm, respectively.
A field experiment to compare the effects of different granular sizes of fused magnesium phosphate (FMP) on the growth and yield of barley plants was conducted on a loam soil during the 1978/1979 cropping period. The results were summarized as follows: 1. No significant differences in yield were observed between the application of comercial FMP, mixture of large and small granules, and small granular FMP; however, the smaller FMP application increased the yield of barley by 5 percent than the larger FMP application. 2. The fresh root weight and the total dry matter were greater in the smaller granular FMP, and the yield showed a linear relationship with the fresh root weight.
The response of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) to dual inoculation with Rhizobium (R) and arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) was studied on spore abundance and colonization of AM, nodulation, growth, yield attributes and yield. In all the parameters of the crop the performance of Rhizobium inoculant alone was superior to control. Dual inoculation with Rhizobium and AM in presence of P performed the best in recording number of spore $100g^{-1}$ rhizosphere soil and root colonization, number and dry weight of nodule, dry weights of shoot and root, number of pod $plant^{-1}$, number of seed $pod^{-1}$, seed and stover yields of chickpea. The maximum seed yield of 3.33 g $plant^{-1}$ was obtained by inoculating chickpea plants with Rhizobium and AM in association with P. From the view point of nodulation, growth, yield attributes and yield of chickpea, dual inoculation with Rhizobium and AM along with P was considered to be the balanced combination of nutrients for achieving the highest output from cultivation of chickpea in Shallow Red Brown Terrace Soil of Bangladesh.
The seedlings of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia Poeppig & Endlicher), which were cuttings, plug seedling (PS), crown bud before sprouting (CBBS), crown bud after sprouting (CBAS), and divided seedling after budding (DSAB) were planted at 70$\times$50 cm planting distance on ridge; that was interow spacingintrarow spacing, and about 28,500$\pm$71 plants/ha. CBBS didn't need work and equipment to raise seedlings. PS and DSAB grew taller to 140.5 and 143.3cm, respectively, than others at 150 days after planting. In the changes of plant height, PS and DSAB showed taller than others during growth period, cuttings, CBBS, and CBAS grew rapidly in middle growth stage. Excepting main stem and petiole length, other characters were significant for seedling. Fresh weights were different among seedlings. Even though the yield of plants grown from CBAS and CBBS were lower with 34.7 and 36.4 ton/ha, respectively, than 3.6 ton/ha of DSAB; its yield index were over 95%, hence, those of plants grown from cutting and PS were lower with 73 and 87%, respectively. The ratio of tuberous roots over 200g to total tuberous roots per plant was the highest from DSAB. Most of tuberous roots were under 200g per tuberous root from cuttings. CBBS, CBAS, and DSAB are suitable to use seedlings for high yield of yacono. Yacon plant by DSAB much produced tuberous root of over 200g.
The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of organic fertilizer. Sarang of fermented poultry manure. Miwon glutamic acid fertilizer and poultry manure, on the growth and yield of radish cultivated in spring and autumn. 1) The growth of leaf length, leaf weight, root length, root diameter and root weight of radish in two culture types was stimulated in order of NPK, fermented poultry manure + 1/5NK, fermented poultry manure, poultry manure and control treatment, and chlorophyll and nitrogen content of leaf were increased in order of the above mentioned fertilizers.2) Yield decreased in fermented poultry manure plot of 450kg application comparison with NPK plot but the one of 1800kg fermented poultry manure was increased. The yield of 450kg Sarang plot was sufficient as compared with Korean average yield of spring and autumn culture.3) The difference of growth of radish between treatments of fermented poultry manure and NPK was lowered by continuous application of Sarang organic fertilizer.4) Soil nitrogen content and exchangeable Mg were similar in all treatments but soil pH, the contents of organic matter, $P_2 O_5$ and Ca were high in the fermented poultry manure treatment.
This study was carried out to investigate the relation between bolting rate and root yield of Angelica gigas for 3 years from 1992 to 1994. Plant height at early growth stage and bolting rate showed linear regression as y=-8.502+0.5449x. Root yield was highest at the field with 11% bolting. Root yield of Angelica gigas in relation to seedling size was highest from medium and small seedlings with 10 to 15% bolting and from large seedlings with below 10% bolting.

Background: The use of Rehmannia glutinosa of the family Scrophulariaceae, in traditional medicine is well known. This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of air curing of the seed rhizome of R. glutinosa on its storability and yield. Methods and Results: The root of the R. glutinosa cultivar (Dagang) was harvested in at the end of November. The seed rhizomes were air cured for one to seven days. They were subsequently wrapped with newspaper and further stored in a plastic container at $1^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the weight loss and decay rates were significantly lower in the air cured seeds than in the untreated ones. Moreover, the decay rate of the control was approximately 50%, 120 days after storage. However. the decay rate of all the air cured treatment groups was less than 1%. Additionally, air curing led to an increase in the germination rate of the seeds and the root yield when compared with the untreated groups. Taken together, the ideal treatment period for air curing was found to be 3 days. Under these conditions, the germination rate and yield were 88.7% and 2,185 ㎏/10a, respectively. Conclusions: This study successfully demonstrated that the air curing of seed rhizomes can lead to a considerable increase in the storability and yield of R. glutinosa.
To develop a new ginseng variety with good quality and high yielding, a lot of individual ginseng plant were selected in the farmers′ fields in 1968. Among them, a promising line, 680-98-2, has been developed through comparative cultivation of several lines selected with pure line separation from local races in Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute. Preliminary and advanced yield trials were performed for 8 years. 1) One of them was designated as KG102 and it was then registered as a new variety "Yunpoong" with the regional yield and adaptation trials for 10 years (1981-1990) on November 30, 1998 in Korea.2) For the root characters, the diameter of taproot and ratio of the taproot length to the diameter of Yunpoong were bigger and lower than those of Jakyungiong. Root yield was 27.3% higher in Yunpoong than Jakyungiong.
