Purpose: The study was aimed at investigating changes in periodontal parameters and superoxide dismutase activity triggered by root surface debridement with and without micronutrient supplementation in postmenopausal women. Methods: Forty-three postmenopausal chronic periodontitis patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (n=22) were provided periodontal treatment in the form of scaling and root planing (SRP) and group 2 (n=21) patients received SRP along with systemic administration of micronutrient antioxidants. Patients in both groups were subjected to root surface debridement. Group 2 patients also received adjunctive micronutrient antioxidant supplementation. Serum and salivary superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity along with periodontal parameters were recorded at baseline and 3 months after therapy. Results: Salivary and serum SOD values significantly (P<0.05) improved with periodontal treatment. Improvement in systemic enzymatic antioxidant status along with reduction in gingival inflammation and bleeding on probing (%) sites was significantly greater in group 2 as compared to group 1. Conclusions: Adjunctive micronutrient supplements reduce periodontal inflammation and improve the status of systemic enzymatic antioxidants in postmenopausal women.
In order to develop a natural food preservative, the root bark of Morus alba was extracted with several solvents, and then antimicrobial activity was investigated. The optimum extracting condition for the antimicrobial substance from the sample, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracted substance against microorganisms were also examined. The antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract form the sample was stronger than those of the extracts by the other solvents such as water, methanol. ethyl acetate and acetone. The optimum extracting condition for antimicrobial substance from the sample was shaking extraction twice for 5 hours at room temperature in case of 7 times of absolute ethanol added to the crushed root bark of Morus alba. The ethanol extract from the root bark of Morus alba had strong B. cereus, L. monocytogenes and S. aureus. Especially, Bacillus species was the most susceptible to the extracted substance. The ethanol extract showed antimicrobial activity against Gram negative bacteria(MIC, 160~1600 ug/ml) and yeasts(MIC, 1600 ug/ml) such as C. albicans and S. acidifaeciens. The extract also showed growth inhibition against molds such as A. niger, A. parasiticus, A versicolar and T. viride.
The hairy root was induced form potato tuber disc by infection of a. rhizogenes. The detection of the agropine and mannopine by paper electrophoresis confirmed that induced hairy root was transformed by A. rhizogenes. The activity of peroxidase was the highest at 5 weeks and isozyme pattern of peroxidase revealed 3 cathodic bands and 2 anodic bands and new C4 band(pI 4.6) was observed at 7 weeks after cultivation in hairy root was isoelectric focusing. To study the effect of Ca2+ on cell wall formation in hairy root, channel blocker of Ca2+ was treated. The activity of $\beta$-glucan synthetase II(GS II) related to cell wall synthesis was inhibited by about 50% in diltiazem and flunarizine treatment than that of control, but stimulated in CaCl2 treatment. Therefore these results showed that Ca2+ might be an effective factor in the cell wall formation. The activity of GS II by NaF treatment was increased by about 30%. This result suggested that the activity GS II is changed through phosphorylation process.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of in vitro studies regarding the effectiveness of reciprocating and rotary instrumentation on microbial reduction in root canals. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and the gray literature were searched through December 2019. Studies comparing the influence of reciprocating and rotary instrumentation on the removal of microorganisms from root canals that quantified the antimicrobial effect were included. Data extraction was completed using a systematic form for data collection. The risk of bias of the studies was evaluated. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random effects meta-analysis. Results: Seventeen in vitro studies were included in this systematic review, of which 7 provided adequate data for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Both reciprocating and rotary systems were similarly effective in reducing the microbial load in infected root canals (SMD [95% CI], 0.0481 [-0.271, 0.367]). Three studies showed a low risk of bias, whereas most of the studies (82%) presented a medium risk. Conclusions: Although both techniques decrease the microbial content (with reductions of 23.32%-88.47% and 23.33%-89.86% for reciprocating and rotary instrumentation, respectively), they are not able to provide complete disinfection of root canals.
Let G be a finite group containing a non-abelian Sylow 2-subgroup. We elementarily show that every G-Galois field extension L/K has a hyperbolic trace form in the presence of root of unity.

Objectives: Implants connect the internal body to its external structure, and is mainly supported by alveolar bone. Stable osseointegration is therefore required when implants are inserted into bone to retain structural integrity. In this paper, we present an implant with a "wing" design on its area. This type of implant improved stress distribution patterns and promoted changes in bone remodeling. Materials and Methods: Finite element analysis was performed on two types of implants. One implant was designed to have wings on its cervical area, and the other was a general root form type. On each implant, tensile and compressive forces ($30N/m^2$, $35N/m^2$, $40N/m^2$, and $45N/m^2$) were loaded in the vertical direction. Stress distribution and displacement were subsequently measured. Results: The maximum stresses measured for the compressive forces of the wing-type implant were $21.5979N/m^2$, $25.1974N/m^2$, $29.7971N/m^2$, and $32.3967N/m^2$ when $30N/m^2$, $35N/m^2$, $40N/m^2$, and $45N/m^2$ were loaded, respectively. The maximum stresses measured for the root form type were $23.0442N/m^2$, $26.9950N/m^2$, $30.7257N/m^2$, and $34.5584N/m^2$ when $30N/m^2$, $35N/m^2$, $40N/m^2$, and $45N/m^2$ were loaded, respectively. Thus, the maximum stresses measured for the tensile force of the root form implant were significantly higher (about three times greater) than the wing-type implant. The displacement of each implant showed no significant difference. Modifying the design of cervical implants improves the strength of bone structure surrounding these implants. In this study, we used the wing-type cervical design to reduce both compressive and tensile distribution forces loaded onto the surrounding structures. In future studies, we will optimize implant length and placement to improve results. Conclusion: 1. Changing the cervical design of implants improves stress distribution to the surrounding bone. 2. The wing-type implant yielded better results, in terms of stress distribution, than the former root-type implant.
Detailed structures of ectomycorrhizae formed in Pinus roots were observed with various microscopes: light, fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopes. The mantles and Hartig nets commonly found in the structure of ectomycorrhiza were newly observed according to developmental stage by various staining. The mycelia were observed to be composed of coiled types on the surface of epidermal root during early stage and fused to form mantles of smooth fungal layers, loosing mycelia with some viscous liquid secreted. The ectomycorrhizal hyphae in anatomical roots penetrated the cortical layer and formed obviously mantle and Hartig net. The round spots of ectomycorrhizal mycelia were observed morphological distribution from the cortical layer to vascular bundle of stele in the ectomycorrhizal roots of Pinus species and especially scattered at the area of meristem at the root tip as longitudinal sections. Those mycelia penetrated seemed to move into other roots by means of vascular bundle of ectomycorrhizal roots and newly form ectomycorrhizal roots of dichotomous branches.
Malonyl ginsenoside content of the Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer is known to account for 35% to 60% of total ginsenosides content. However, its distribution by ginseng part has not been studied. In this study, four kinds of malonyl ginsenosides were compared in Korean white ginseng part using the purified malonyl ginsenoside standards in our laboratory. White ginseng was prepared by the freeze drying ($-70^{\circ}C$, 48 h) or air drying ($50^{\circ}C$, 48 h) methods form 4-year-old ginseng. Malonyl ginsenoside content of main, lateral, and fine root, and of the main root without skin and its skin was compared. Malonyl ginsenosides (m-Rb1, m-Rb2, m-Rc and m-Rd) content (58%, 19.17 mg/g) in total ginsenosides of air dried white ginseng was decreased about 4% compared to its content of freeze dried white ginseng (62%, 20.40 mg/g). Malonyl ginsenoside content was the highest in fine root, compared to the main or lateral root. Malonyl ginsenosides content in skin of main root was 20.08 mg/g, while its content of the main root without skin was 2.58 mg/g. These results are expected to help establishment of quality specification and processing process in Korean white ginseng.
This study investigated several anatomical characteristics of Paulownia tomentosa roots. The root wood was separated into three parts from stem base (top, middle, and base) at different positions below ground. Qualitative anatomical data suggested that the growth rings in earlywood and latewood were structurally different. Furthermore, the root wood vessels were found having 2 to 3 radial multiples and they were appeared in the form of clusters. In addition, some sheath cells and septate axial parenchyma were observed. Regarding the quantitative anatomical characteristics, vessel and ray numbers per $mm^2$, as well as ray width and height differed significantly among the top, middle, and base rood wood parts. However, there were no significant differences in vessel diameters, cell wall thickness, and width and length of wood fibers among those parts. The crystallinity of the root top part was slightly higher than that of the middle and base parts. Furthermore, the vessel numbers, ray numbers, and ray width and height in the near pith (NP) area were higher compared to those in the near bark (NB) area. However, the fiber width and fiber length at NP were lower than those at NB. Overall, this study demonstrated some significant differences in the anatomical characteristics of the top, middle, and base parts of root wood from Paulownia tomentosa.
