Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics of the Pressure Vessel Steel SA 508 Cl. 3 in Various Environments

  • Fatigue tests in air and in room temperature water were performed to obtain comparable data and stable crack measuring conditions. In air environment, fatigue crack growth rate was increased with increasing temperature due to an increase in crack tip oxidation rate. In room temperature water, the fatigue crack growth rate was faster than in air and crack path varied on loading conditions. In simulated light water reactor (LWR) conditions, there was little environmental effect on the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) at low dissolved oxygen or at high loading frequency conditions. While the FCGR was enhanced at high oxygen condition, and the enhancement of crack growth rate increased as loading frequency decreased to a critical value. In fractography, environmentally assisted cracks, such as semi-cleavage and secondary intergranular crack, were found near sulfide inclusions only at high dissolved oxygen and low loading frequency condition. The high crack growth rate was related to environmentally assisted crack. These results indicated that environmentally assisted crack could be formed by the Electrochemical effect in specific loading condition.

  • The effect of reduction and re-oxidation firing on the PTCR properties of Sm-doped Barium Titanate ceramics was investigated for the application of multilayered PTC thermistor. The lattice parameter a, c decreases monotonically with increasing oxygen concentration in the reoxidation atmosphere, which seems to be related with the electrostatic Coulomb interaction between oxygen vancancy and nearest other atoms. With increasing oxygen concentration, the resistivity at room temperature and the magnitude of resistivity jump as a function of temperature increased in the region of oxygen concentration of 0 $\sim$ 10%. However, the resistivity at room temperature and the magnitude of resistivity jump is nearly constant and saturated in the region of oxygen concentration of 10 $\sim$ 20%. These phenomena is considered to be related with the variation of oxygen and barium-vancany concentration near the grain boundary.

산화막 성장이 지르코늄 합금의 기계적 물성 열화에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Oxide Growth on Mechanical Properties Degradation of Zirconium Alloys)

  • A study on the effects of oxide growth on the mechanical properties degradation of pure zirconium and Zircaloy-4 is carried out with high temperature tensile tests. It is found that the mechanical properties can deteriorate with the oxide growth less than $1\%$ of total specimen cross section, especially at $300\~400^{\circ}C$ that is zirconium alloy cladding temperature during the nuclear reactor operation. It is also revealed that Young's modulus changes little but yield strength and tensile strength drop down to $20\% and 40\%$ of the room temperature strength, respectively, in the temperature range. Fractographic analysis shows that the number of dimples decreases and fractured surface becomes smooth with increasing oxide thickness.

  • The variation of photoluminescence(PL) properties of Si thin films was investigated by changing deposition temperatures, Si-rich silicon oxide films on p-type (100) Si substrate have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition(PLD) technique using a Nd:YAG laser. During deposition, the substrates were kept at the temperature range of room temperature(RT) to $400^{\circ}C$. After deposition, samples were annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ in nitrogen ambient, Strong Blue PL has been observed on RT-deposited Si nanocrystallites. When the deposition temperature was increased over $100^{\circ}C$, PL intensities abruptly decreased. The experimental results show the growing mechanism of Si nanocrystallites by PLD.

삼원소 전극촉매 이용에 따른 에탄올 산화반응에 관한 연구 (The study of ethanol electro-oxidation using ternary electrocatalysts)

  • PtRu based and PtSn based ternary catalysts were prepared by a conventional impregnation method using NaBH4 as reducing agent. The alloy formation, crystalline size and chemical composition of the in-house catalysts were determined by XRD, TEM and EDX, respectively. The chemical compositions of in-house catalysts were quite similar to the nominal value and good alloy formations were also observed. Further, crystalline sizes of ternary catalysts were comparatively smaller than binary catalysts and were approximately 3.5 ~ 5.5 nm. The electrochemical measurements were carried out in the solution 1 M $H_2SO_4$ with 1 M $C_2H_5OH$ at room temperature. LSV results obtained that ternary catalysts were higher current densities and specific activities. Especially, in case of tungsten addition system, Pt5Sn4W/C have the highest specific activities values and was approximately 21.2 and 3.1 times higher than that of PtRu/C and PtSn/C electrocatalyst.

반조리 냉동 육류제품의 저장 및 재가열 방법에 따른 지방 산화율 측정 (Measurement of Lipid Oxidation Rates in Semi-prepared Frozen Muscle Foods During Various Storage and Reheating Conditions)

  • Semi-prepared frozen muscle foods purchased from local industry were tested for lipid oxidation. The effects of various storage conditions, cooking methods, defrosting methods and reheating methods on rancidity were examined using TBA assay and sensory evaluation. TBARS values were increased faster in cooked samples than in uncooked ones during storage periods. During refrigeration of cooked samples, TBARS values were increased significantly for 15 days (p<0.001). In defrosting experiments, refrigerated defrosting was proven to be better compared with room temperature or microwave defrosting (p<0.05). For overall explanation, stepwise regression analysis was done and the results are in this order: storage conditions, cooking methods, moisture content, and lipid content. Using these 4 variables, TBARS values could be explained by 40~53%.

  • Grain boundary chemistry and electrical characteristics of polycrystalline BaTiO3 ceramics, which were prepared with sol-gel surface-coated semiconducting powders, were investigated. Mn ions were coated on the powder surface by sol-gel coating-techniques. The additives coated on the surface of the powders were observed to be present near the grain boundaries of the ceramics. The ceramics exhibit the PTCR characteristics with a resistivity jump ratio(Pmax/Pmin) of about 2$\times$103. With raising the temperature from room temprature to 20$0^{\circ}C$, the oxidation state of the Mn ions varied from Mn3+ to Mn2+ in the coating layers. Near the grain boundaries an excessive negative charge layer of about 20nm was formed.

  • We have demonstrated that textured $Al_2O_3-mullite-SiC$ nanocomposites can be fabricated by slip casting followed by partial oxidation - reaction sintering of mixed suspensions of $Al_2O_3$ and SiC powders in a high magnetic field. The sintered density was changed by the degree of oxidation at 1200C and 1300C. The degree of orientation of alumina in the nanocomposite was examined on the basis of the X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron micrographs. It is confirmed that alumina-oriented nanocomposites were fabricated. The three-point bending strength at room temperature was observed for the nanocomposites.

Characterization of the UV Oxidation of Raw Natural Rubber Thin Film Using Image and FT-IR Analysis

  • Characterization of the UV oxidation for raw natural rubber (NR) was investigated in controlled conditions through image and FT-IR analysis. The UV oxidation was performed on a thin film of natural rubber coated on a KBr window at 254 nm and room temperature to exclude the thermal oxidation. Before or after exposure to UV light, image of the NR thin film was observed at a right or tilted angle. FT-IR absorption spectra were measured in transmission mode with the UV irradiation time. The UV oxidation of NR was examined by the changes of absorption peaks at 3425, 1717, 1084, 1477, 1377, and $833cm^{-1}$ which were assigned to hydroxyl group (-OH), carbonyl group (-C=O), carbon-oxygen bond (-C-O), methylene group $(-CH_2-)$, methyl group $(-CH_3)$, and cis-methine group $(cis-CCH_3=CH-)$, respectively. During the initial exposure period, the results indicated that the appearance of carbonyl group was directly related to the reduction of cis-methine group containing carbon-carbon double bond (-C=C-). Most of aldehydes or ketones from carbon-carbon double bonds were formed very fast by chain scission. A lot of long wide cracks with one orientation at regular intervals which resulted in consecutive chain scission were observed by image analysis. During all exposure periods, on the other hand, it was considered that the continuous increment of hydroxyl and carbonyl group was closely related to the decrement of methylene and methyl group in the allylic position. Therefore, two possible mechanisms for the UV oxidation of NR were suggested.
