A Comparison of the Prediction of Sprinkler Response Time Applying Fire Models (스프링클러 반응시간 예측에 대한 화재모델의 비교)

  • To evaluate the usability of compartment fire models for predicting sprinkler response time, fire experiment was conducted and measured sprinkler response time. The experimental data was compared with zone model "FASTLite"and field model "FDS"and field Model "SMARTFIRE" A Compartment fire conducted in a 2.4 m by 3.6 m by 2.4 m ISO 9705 room and measured H.R.R was approximately 100.3 kW. In test, Sprinkler activation temperature used is $72^{\circ}c$ and responded at 198s. The output of FASTLite, SMARTFIRE and, FDS for this fire scenario were 209s, 183s, and 192s, respectively. As a results, prediction using FDS model approached to that of test very closely and other models showed good approximated results also.

  • A Fire Safety Evaluation Module(FSEM), which quantitatively evaluates the risk of evacuees when fire occurs in buildings or ships, is presented in this paper. The developed FSEM can be applied to multi-room structure. Basic input data for the FSEM are prepared by fire model and evacuation model. CFAST which is one of the existing fire models is used as fire model and MonteDEM evacuation model was developed for evacuation model, respectively. MonteDEM evacuation model makes use of distinct element method and Monte-Carlo simulation, and it can also take into consideration ground inclination by ship motions in order to simulate the real situation of evacuation. Some typical situations are modelled for illustrative examples and quantitative assessment of evacuee's risk under fire accident is carried out.

  • A large-scale fire test was done for interior materials from a vehicle installed within a fire test room. The interior materials are satisfied with the Korean guide for the safety of rail vehicle. The guide has taken effect since December 2004 in Korea. Ignition source (gas burner) was increased in several controlled steps. The objectives of this test are to assess the fire performance in terms of ignition and flame spread on interior lining materials and to provide data on an enclosure fires involving train interior materials that grow to flashover. This data will be used to develop and calibrate an Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) model for fire growth on the interior vehicle.

  • This study has investigated radiation degradation of chloroprene rubber in the presence of some fire retardant. Ammonium polyphosphate, aluminium trihydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and antimony trioxide were selected as flame retardant. Samples were irradiated using a Co$^{60}$ ${\gamma}$ -ray and ray up to 2000 kGy at a dose rate of 5 kGy/hr in the presence of air atmosphere at room temperature. After irradiation, samples were assessed fire retardancy with electrical properties and mechanical properties. Some considerations concerning the effects of the fire retardants added to chloroprene rubber on the radiation and thermal stability of chloroprene rubber are presented. From fire retardancy with electrical and mechanical property measurements, it was found that addition of magnesium hydroxide resulted in maximum fire retardant effect.

  • To improve the fire safety of ships, it is required to prepare the systematic design guideline for fire protection and the way of assessing fire characteristics quantitatively. The introduction of simulation technique based on fire engineering is useful to assess fire safety performance quantitatively. Fire simulation tools are currently developing with U.S.A., Europe and Japan as a leader. Most of current fire simulation tools were developed for building or inland structure. Therefore it is required validation process and development of data base to apply maritime environments. In this paper, I/O parameters of simulation tools such as CFAST and BRI2002 of zone model and FDS and KFX of field model analysed, and designed data base considering maritime environment. The fire simulation for the pool fire model of engine room and its adjacent compartments is performed and evaluated the results.

  • The fire detectors used in the engine rooms of ships offer only a slow response to emergencies because smoke or heat must reach detectors installed on ceilings, but the air flow in engine rooms can be very fluid depending on the use of equipment. In order to overcome these disadvantages, much research on video-based fire detection has been conducted in recent years. Video-based fire detection is effective for initial detection of fire because it is not affected by air flow and transmission speed is fast. In this paper, experiments were performed using images of smoke from a smoke generator in an engine room. Data generated using LBP and GLCM operators that extract the textural features of smoke was classified using SVM, which is a machine learning classifier. Even if smoke did not rise to the ceiling, where detectors were installed, smoke detection was confirmed using the image-based technique.

  • In December 2017, a fire at the Jecheon Sports Center caused 29 deaths and 40 injuries, and about 2 billion won in property damage. It is a facility used by unspecified people as a publicly used establishment with a piloti structure. The damage was expanded due to the ignition of combustible exterior materials, Lack of fire protection in horizontal and vertical penetrations. Although legislation has improved since the fire, it is not retroactively applied, increasing the risk of fire in existing buildings. Accordingly, it is necessary to examine the case of the Jecheon Sports Center fire and draw out the problems. In this study, the fire simulation results and the Jecheon Sports Center fire are comparatively analyzed and used as basic data for fire reduction measures in publicly used establishment. As a result of the fire simulation drive, in the case of the second floor, the room temperature exceeded the human life safety standard of 60 ℃ after about 700 seconds had passed. In the case of three floor, it is predicted that the indoor temperature will exceed about 350 ℃. and temporary complexation will occur in the indoor combustibles.
