  • In this study, we surveyed historical housing settlements of Hwangjon in Bonghwa-a clan village in Youngnam district which was formed in the Chosun Dynasty. We observe the relationships among the spatial layout of clan villages, the water flows and the family hierarchies as follows; (1) when a clan village was initially formed, the water flow, which is the phylosophical foundation of Poong Soo, was the most important factor for determining the original location; (2) as villages prosper, the water flow and the family hierarchy still played an important role in determining the following geological locations; (3) in modern age, however, the water flow and the family hierarchy lost the role in detrmining the geological locations; (4) consequently, in present days, each household becomes isolated from the village. Reflecting on these observations, for village to be maintained, we conclude that we need novel practical and cohesive village forming drives that can replace the water flows and the family hierarchy in the past.

  • The purpose of this research was to examine variables contributing to the father's role performance. The study has been designed to measure the quantitative(i.e. amount of involvement) and the qualitative(i.e. depth of affection/care) values in their modes of child-rearing practices by taking a clouter look at the father's views on their careers and on offspring. Subjects were 516 fathers of school-age children. Analyzing the factors that determine the quantitative and qualitative aspects of child-rearing practices by the fathers, the sense of fulfillment/value in life is the decisive factor behind the affection(i.e. qualitative) in the child-rearing practices. The resets indicated that the father's perceptions on their careers and on their children constitute the critical factors behind the qualitative and quantitative aspects of child-rearing practices, albeit holding such factors as the parents'working hour or as mothers with outside jobs under control.

  • Pressure ripple of hydraulic vane pump results form flow ripple due to pump geometry and reverse flow through the discharge port due to compressibility of fluid and result in vibration and noise of connected hydraulic elements. In a ba;anced type vane pump, cam ring curve is important factor to influence the flow ripple. Therefore, to reduce the now ripple, it has been required that optimal selection of seal region by proper design of cam ring and each port position, and notches for preventing the excessive reverse flow. This paper has been performed analytical study of compression characteristics with major design parameter in side plate and cam ring, and examined into the role of notch and radius reduction ratio.

  • Stress, a risk factor of major depression induces cytokine mediated inflammation and decreased neurogenesis. In patients with major depression, significant increases of pro-inflammatory cytokines have been consistently reported. The pro-inflammatory cytokines can stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to release glucocorticoids. In the brain, microglia and play a role of immune activation in response to stress. Increased pro-inflammatory cytokine play a role in restricting neurogenesis in the brain. Although neurogenesis may not be essential for the development of depression, it may be required for clinically effective antidepressant treatment. Hence, stimulation of neurogenesis is regarded as a promising strategy for new antidepressant targets. This review introduces changes in neurotransmitter, cytokine and neurogenesis in major depression and explores the possible relationship between pro-inflammatory cytokines and neurogenesis related to stress in major depression.

  • We examine historical contributions of inter fuel substitution, changes in carbon efficiency and energy intensity, growth of economy and population to Korea's $CO_2$ emissions from 1970 to 1998 using the log mean weight Divisia index method. The study reveals that economic growth is the most significant factor to $CO_2$ emissions growth among the five factors. Changes in the fuel substitution and carbon coefficient are found negative contributors to $CO_2$ emissions growth. Energy intensity, which played dominant role in halting $CO_2$ emissions growth in the 1980s, began to play reversed role in the 1990s. When evaluated with the log mean Divisia index technique, deterioration of energy intensity in the 1990s is found worse and expected to contribute $CO_2$ emissions growth further.

  • The paper explores determinants of corporate adoption of social media and the role of technology acceptance model in the path. This paper assimilates some components of the technology acceptance dimension and social expectation theories to determine corporate intentions to use social media. Six hundred and forty-eight samples collected from hotel staff in Korea are analyzed using factor analysis, structural equation model techniques and one-way analysis of variance. The results show that corporate needs, social expectations, ease of use and usefulness should be viewed as important antecedents explaining the firm's behavioral intention to use social media. The study also finds that the ease of use and usefulness of the technology acceptance model have positive directional mediation effects in the path diagram.

  • Several micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are required as co-factors in DNA synthesis, DNA repair, DNA methylation and apoptosis. Some notable examples include (a) folic acid and vitamin B12 required for maintenance methylation of DNA and the synthesis of dTTP from dUTP, thus prevent the misincorporation of uracil into DNA, a highly mutagenic and chromosome-breaking event, (b) niacin, is essential in the form of the coenzymes NAD and NADP which act as a substrate for polyADPribose polymerase (PARP), an enzyme thought to facilitate efficient DNA repair and telomere length regulation and (c) zinc, apart from its antioxidant role as a co-factor in Cu/Zn SOD, it is required in its stabilizing role of the DNA-binding domain of p53 (residues 102-292) and thus is essential for apoptotic response to DNA damage. • The effect of the extracellular protease of Salmonella schottmulleri on human serum constituents such as immunoglobulins, hemoglobin and lysozyme and tissue constituents such as fibronectin and collagens was investigated. This protease degraded collagens (type I and III), fibronectin and serum proteins such as human hemoglobin and lysozyme. Bovine serum albumin was degraded slightly. Thus, the present study suggested the possibility that this protease is not only played an important role in invasion of S. schottmulleri by degrading the constituent proteins such as collagens and fibronectin but also induced complications observed in septicemia and chronic infections by degrading the serum proteins. This protease is also capable of degrading defence-oriented humoral proteins, immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM). Furthermore, it is toxic to HEp-2 cells. These findings clarified the possible role of Salmonella protease as a virulence factor in the pathogenesis of Salmonella infections.

  • The role of chlorination reactions in the formation of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in a municipal waste incinerator was assessed using a chlorination model for predicting PCDF isomer distributions. Complete distributions of PCDF congeners were obtained from a stoker-type municipal waste incinerator operated under 13 test conditions. Samples were collected from the flue gas prior to the gas cleaning system. While total PCDF yields varied by a factor of five to six, the distributions of congeners were similar. A chlorination model, dependent only on the observed distribution of monochlorinated isomers, was developed to predict the distributions of poly-chlorinated isomers formed by chlorination of dibenzofuran (DF). Agreement between predicted and measured PCDF isomer distributions was high for all homologues, supporting the hypothesis that DF chlorination can play an important role in the formation of PCDF byproducts.
