We studied petrological and geochemical characteristics of the Mesozoic volcanic rocks in the Da Hinggan Ling area northeast China, and discussed tectonic settings and origin of the Mesozoic volcanic rocks in northeast Asia. Volcanic rocks in Da Hinggan Ling area are composed of alkaline to subalkaline basalt-basaltic andesite-andesite-dacite-rhyolite, showing typical BAR(basalt-andesite-rhyolite) association. However, most of the volcanic rocks are basaltic and rhyolitic in composition, and andesitic rocks are relatively rare, which shows bimodal characteristics. Rb, Ba, Th and other incompatible element contents in the volcanic rocks are enriched, but the contents decrease with increasing the compatibility. REEs are fractionated and REE patterns of volcanic rocks are characterized by a high LILE/HFSE. On the tectonomagmatic discriminant diagram of Hf-Th-Nb, they fall into the fields for subduction-related destructive plate margin basalts and its differentiates. We suggest that the tectonomagmatic setting of Da Hinggan Ling area was located at the continental margin arc related with subduction environment during the Mesozoic time or may be derived from mantle plume contaminated geochemically from subducting slabs, although it is, at present within the Asia continent.
This study reports petrography and geochemical characteristics of the Cretaceous volcanic rocks that are distributed in the vicinity of the Cheonsungsan area, Yangsan-Gun, Gyeongsangnam-Do. The Cretaceous volcanic rocks composed of andesitic rocks, Wonhyosan tuff, Cheonsungsan tuff in ascending order. Sedimentary rock is the basement in the study area cofered with volcanic rocks. These volcanic rocks are Wonhyosan tuff and Cheonsungsan tuff that represented the early phase of the Bulgugsa igneous activity. Wonhyosan tuff are classified into dacite tuff and dacite welded tuff based on the rock texture and their mineral composition. They are covered with Cheonsungsan tuff. Dacite tuff composed of lithic lapilli ash-flow tuff and vitric ash-flow tuff. Most dacite welded tuff are lapilli ash-flow tuff. Cheonsungsan tuff overlying the Wonhyosan tuff consists of rhyolite tuff and rhyolite welded tuff. Rhyolite tuff are lithic crystal ash-flow tuff and crystal vitric ash-flow tuff with somewhat accidental fragments of andesitic and sedimentary rocks. Rhyolite welded tuff is distinguishe from rhyolite tuff by is typical eelded fabrics and its rock color. According to petrochemical data, the volcanic rocks in study area belong to high-K orogenic suties. On the discriminant diagrams such as La/Yb versus Th/Yb, these rocks falls into the discriminant fields for the normal continental margin arc.
This study examines the mineralogy of sepiolites occurred within the carbonaceous rocks of Songak schist and Pyeongtaek migmatitic gneiss of Precambrian Seosan group, in the western part of Chungnam. Host rocks of the sepiolite were dolomitic rocks and have experienced hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism. Mesozoic granite is assumed as a main source of hydrothermal alteration for the dolomitic rocks. Some of the tremolite asbestos coexist with the sepiolites. Representative sepiolite and tremolite samples were collected from the layers cracks or fractures of the dolomitic rocks and/or examined with microscope with microscope, XRD, SEM and TEM. Sepiolites are mainly recognized along the cracks assumed as pathways of hydrothermal solution. Tremolites are mainly found at layers or cracks of the dolomitic rocks and occur as asbestos as well as non-asbestos forms. It was confirmed that some of the tremolite asbestos were coexisted with the sepiolites. Overall results suggest that the occurrences of sepiolites within the dolomitic rocks mainly result in the hydrothermal alteration and the fluid from the acidic rocks, possibly granites. It also suggests that coexisting tremolite asbestos were formed by similar geological environment.

The volcanic rocks around Mieukdo Island, Tongyeong, are classified as lower andesitic rocks (Jusasan Subgroup) and rhyolitic rocks (Unmunsa Subgroup), and upper andesitic rocks (Yokji Subgroup) and rhyolitic rocks (Saryang Subgroup). We confirmed their eruption timings and stratigraphic relationships, based on SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating for zircons from major stratigraphic units of the subgroups. By the SHRIMP U-Pb dating, the samples yield the concordia ages of $88.95{\pm}0.44Ma$(n=11) in Punghwari Tuff and $82.56{\pm}0.95Ma$(n=10) in Chudo Tuff of the lower andesitic rocks, and $73.01{\pm}0.75Ma$(n=11) in Dara Andesite of the upper andesitic rocks. And then samples show a concordia age of $71.74{\pm}0.47Ma$(n=14) in Namsan rhyolite dyke of the upper rhyolitic rocks and an apparent age of $70.7{\pm}3.5Ma$ in granodiorite dyke, These data confirm the eruption or injection timings of the units and allow them to distinguish chronostratigraphy of Jusasan, Unmunsa, Yokji and Saryang Subgroups around the Mireukdo Island. In addition, the subgroups give a clue that can make a chronostratigraphical correlation with different volcanic units of the Late Cretaceous Yucheon Group in the Gyeongsang basin.
The geology of the northwestern Cheju Island consist of Pleistocene to Holocene volcanic rocks which could be devided into basalt layers, the Sungsan Formation composed mainly of volcaniclastic debris exposed along the shoreline, and more than 30 cinder cones. Columnar joints and vesicles are dominant in the basalts of the Pyeosunri and the Sihungri basalt Formations. Volcaniclast and clay layers are intercalated in basaltic layers. When volcaniclast of the interlayers would be swept away by ground water and some caves of channel shape would be formaed. Overlying lavas cracked by columnar joints could be easily destroyed, collapsed and/or sunk. Geomechananical nature of the rocks such as strength may be controlled by the vesicularity(size, shape, and orientation of the vesicles) of the rocks. On the basis of vesicularity as a factor of strength, the effective strength ratio(Ke) could be calculated as Ke=0.3-0.72, in which the smaller Ke value reflects the lower in internal stress. In the studied area, the strength of the rocks tends to decrease as increasing in altitude of provenance of the rocks. The rocks in the area show relatively low values in angle of failure strength($\phi$) ranging from 10$^{\circ}$ to 30$^{\circ}$. In conclnsion, the rocks in question, majority of which the critical value exceeds 0.33, belong to the unstable rocks in the aspect of engineering geology.
The plutonic rocks in Seonsan area are divided into dioritic-syenitic rock, gneissose granite, biotite granite and fine grained biotite granite. These rocks intruded into the Pre-cambrian metamorphic complex and are all covered by the Cretaceous Nakdong formation. According to modal minerals, dioritic-syenitic rock corresponds to quartz monzonite, granodiorite, tonalite fields, whereas all the other plutonic rocks fall in granite field. Petrochemically the dioritic-syenitic rock is lower in SiO$_2$ content, differentiation index and Larsen index than all the other plutonic rocks. About the zircon morphology, dioritic-syenitic rock shows (100) dominant type but other granitic rocks exhibit mixed types between (100) and (110) type. The dioritic-syenitic rock could be crystallized in higher temperature than the other plutonic rocks. The plutonic rocks correspond to calc-alkaline rock series, and belong to I-type granite and mostly magnetite-series in magmatic origin. In plutonic processes, the dioritic-syenitic rock with 5kb vapor pressure could intrude into the metamorphic batement at 17km deep below the surface. Later the gneissose granite with lower 3kb vapor pressure could intrude at 10km deep. Sequentially the biotite granite with 0.7kb could intrude at 2km deep. Finally the fine grained biotite granite with 3kb vapor pressure could intrude at 10km deep.
The purpose of this study was to determined the conceptual structure used by earth science teachers to classify metamorphic rocks as well as the criteria applied in the process of classifying metamorphic rocks. To this end, the researchers collected verbal data uttered in the process of classifying metamorphic rock using think-aloud from 21 earth science teachers in middle and high schools in Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea. The collected verbal data were analyzed using the semantic network analysis method, and the following results were obtained. First, in the process of classifying metamorphic rocks, earth science teachers classified them based on characteristics such as color, compositional minerals, and particle size, which can be generally observed in rocks, and foliation that appears in metamorphic rocks. Second, earth science teachers recognize the classification criteria for metamorphic rocks and focus on metamorphism such as contact metamorphism or regional metamorphism. However, there were cases where rocks were mistakenly classified through incorrect identification. Therefore, it is necessary to provide sufficient observational information about, and experience of, metamorphic rocks to enable earth science teachers to recognize and relate to the scientific process of identifying metamorphic rocks through the phenomena observed.

The hot press apparatus to obtain the solidified rocks with 60mm of diameter against rock waste was developed, and the optimum conditions for solidification were founded out, of which were 300.deg. C of temperature and 1hr of holding time. The solidified rocks reinforced with the fibers (carbon, steel) were made by means of a hydrothermal hot press method. Fracture toughness of those was obtained using the round compact tension(RCT) specimens. Load and displacement behaviours of the solidified rocks reinforced with the fibers were dependent upon the fiber volume fraction and kind of the fibers. Strength and fracture energy of the solidified rocks with steel were much larger than those of the solidified ones with carbon because of the Bridge's effect, multiple cracking and crack branching phenomena.
The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' interest on minerals and rocks. Seven hundred and eighty three students from four different regions (i.e., Seoul, Kyunggi, Chungbuk and Jeju) participated in this study. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) The students have somewhat low interest about minerals and rocks. In addition, the students lose the interest because they have been forced to learn minerals and rocks theoretically. (2) Girls' interest on minerals and rocks was higher than that of boys.

To understand the mechanical properties of fault rocks, data from 584 in situ and laboratory tests on fault rocks from 33 tunnels were analyzed. The unit weights of the fault rocks range from 17.3 to $28.2kN/m^3$ and the cohesion and friction angles vary from 5 to 260 kPa and $14.7^{\circ}$ to $44.0^{\circ}$, respectively. The modulus of deformation and elasticity were generally < 200 MPa. In most cases, the uniaxial compressive strength was < 0.5 MPa, and Poisson's ratios were mainly 0.20-0.35. The mechanical properties of individual rock types were analyzed using box plots, revealing that the cohesion values and friction angles of shale and phyllite have relatively wide inter-quartile ranges and that the modulus of deformation and elasticity of shale have the lowest values of all rock types. In the analysis of mechanical properties by components of fault rocks, the largest values were shown in damage zones of individual rock types.
