The settlement limit concept is generally adopted as design criteria of rock-socketed pile foundations, therefore, the load-displacement$(\sigma-\sigma)$ behavior of the rock-socketed piles should be well understood at the design stage, which, however, is hard to achieve due to its complexity. To help this out, field pile load tests are executed on cast-in-situ concrete piles, first, to figure out the $\sigma$-$\delta$ behavior of rock-socketed piles. Next, the $\sigma-\sigma$ relations of the piles are simulated numerically using commercial package program(ELAC) varying a couple of input data which are sensitive in shaping the $\sigma$-$\delta$ curves. Finally, the relation between the best input data for the numerical simulations and the geotechnical field data are cultivated to generalize the numerical simulation procedures, which enables geotechnical engineers to predict the $\sigma$-$\delta$ behavior at the design stage, if appropriate geotechnical field data are provided.

In this study, the load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial load are investigated based on small scale model tests. In order to analyze the effects of major influencing factors of end bearing capacity, Hoek-cell triaxial tests were performed. From the test results, it was found that the initial slope of end bearing load transfer (q-w) curve was highly dependent on rock mass modulus and pile diameter, while the ultimate unit toe resistance ($q_{max}$) was influenced by rock mass modulus and the spacing of discontinuities. End bearing load transfer function of drilled shafts socketed in rock was proposed based on the Hoek-cell triaxial test results and the field loading tests which were performed on granite and gneiss in South Korea. Through the comparison with pile load tests, it is found that the load-transfer curve by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by field loading tests, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer of drilled shaft.
Just as infill material can reduce the shear strength of a rock joint, a layer of soft material between concrete and the surrounding rock socket can reduce pile shaft resistance of drilled shafts socketed in rocks. This can also result from construction methods that leave smeared or remoulded rock or drilling fluid residue on the sides of the rock sockets after concrete placement. The nature of the interface between the concrete pile shaft and the surrounding rock is critically important to the performance of the pile, and is heavily influenced by construction practice. Characteristics of the concrete-rock interface, such as roughness and the presence of the soft materials deposited during or after construction can significantly affect the shaft resistance response of the pile. In this study, we conducted the parametric study to examine the performance characteristics of drilled shafts socketed in smeared rock under the vertical load with the code of finite difference method of FLAC 2D. As the results of the current research, the parameters that affect the settlement of the pile head and the ultimate unit shaft resistance could be identified.

The Design criteria are different from one another due to the different engineering properties of rock in the every nation. Most of the test results of the rock-socketed piers were loaded two times of the design load capacities because they would be used in the foundation of the bridge or the building. So we have much difficulties in study of the load capacities of the rock-socketed piers by the test result in Korea. When we design the rock-socket piers, every designer uses the different formula, and makes different results. Recently the demand of the large bridges and the huge buildings has been increased. The adequate design criterion of the rock-socketed pier is urgently needed to design them reasonable. In this paper we analyzed the various design criteria and proposed the adequate design criterion which is based on the test results of the rock-socked piers in Korea.

The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the mass conditions of rock with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. However, there are few available data and little guidance in the prediction of the end bearing capacity of drilled shafts socketed in weathered/soft rock, considering rock mass weathering. Therefore, a database of 13 load tests was constructed first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions(e.g. Em, Eur, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greather than 0.7 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.
In this study, the load carrying behavior of piled rafts installed in inclined bearing rock layer was investigated for rock-mounted and -socketed conditions. It was found that settlements induced for an inclined bearing rock layer are larger than for a horizontal layer condition. The load capacity of piled rafts for the rock-mounted condition decreased as rock-layer inclination angle (${\theta}$) increased, while vice versa for the rock-socketed condition. The load capacities of raft and piles both decreased with increasing ${\theta}$ for the rock-mounted condition. When bearing rock layer was inclined, loads carried by uphill-side piles were greater than those by downhill-side piles. The values of differential settlements of rock-mounted and -socketed conditions were not significantly different whereas slightly higher for the rock-socketed condition. The values of load sharing ratio (${\alpha}_p$) and its variation with settlement were not markedly changed by the inclination of bedrock. It was shown that ${\alpha}_p$ for piled rafts installed in rock layer was not affected by ${\theta}$ whereas actual loads carried by raft and piles may vary depending on the pile installation and rock-layer inclination conditions.

Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.
The load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the 2D elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Slippage and shear load transfer behavior at the pile-soil interface are investigated by using a user-subroutine interface model (FRlC). It is shown that the coupled soil resistance provides the influence of pile toe settlement as the shaft resistance is increased to an ultimate limit state. The results show that the coupling effect is closely related to the value of pile diameter over rock mass modulus (D/$E_{mass}$) and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load ($R_s$/Q). Through comparisons with field case studies, the 2D numerical analysis reseanably presented load transfer of pile and coupling effect due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

The domestic design method for the shaft resistance of drilled shafts into a bedrock Is based on the empirical method, where the uniaxial compressive strength of rock specimen is utilized for calculation of the shaft resistance. This method has uncertainties in prediction of capacity of drilled shafts and result in uneconomic engineering design. Recently a new improved design method was suggested, which reflects important factors that affect the strength of pile sockets. Socket roughness is one of significant factors influencing the shaft resistance of drilled shaft socketed into rock In this paper roughness information for the shaft resistance design of socket pile was suggested on the basis of statistical analysis of data measured from wall surface In the bore holes of drilled shafts.
