  • The reduction of leakage is a major issue of the South Korea water industry. The inclusion of pressure dependent leakage terms in network analysis allows the application of optimization techniques to identify the most effective means of reducing water leakage in distribution networks. This paper proposes a method to find optimal setting and location of control valve for reducing leakage efficiently. The proposed search method differs from previous methods for addressing optimal valve location problem and improves the GA simulation time with guaranteeing for getting the global optimal solution. The strength of this method has been demonstrated by means of case studies. This allows the procedure of optimization to be more robust and computational efficient.

  • Overlay multicast technique is an effective way as an alternative to IP multicast. Traditional IP multicast is not widely deployed because of the complexity of IP multicast technology and lack of application. But overlay multicast can be easily deployed by effectively reducing complexity of network routers. Because overlay multicast resides on top of densely connected IP network, In case of multimedia streaming service over overlay multicast tree, real-time data is sensitive to end-to-end delay. Therefore, moderate algorithm's development to this network environment is very important. In this paper, we are interested in minimizing maximum end-to-end delay in overlay multicast tree. The problem is formulated as a degree-bounded minimum delay spanning tree, which is a problem well-known as NP-hard. We develop tabu search heuristic with intensification and diversification strategies. Robust experimental results show that is comparable to the optimal solution and applicable in real time

  • Eye gaze as a form of input was primarily developed for users who are unable to use usual interaction devices such as keyboard and the mouse; however, with the increasing accuracy in eye gaze detection with decreasing cost of development, it tends to be a practical interaction method for able-bodied users in soon future as well. This paper explores a low-cost, robust, rotation and illumination independent eye gaze system for gaze enhanced user interfaces. We introduce two brand-new algorithms for fast and sub-pixel precise pupil center detection and 2D Eye Gaze estimation by means of deformable template matching methodology. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm based on the deformable angular integral search algorithm based on minimum intensity value to localize eyeball (iris outer boundary) in gray scale eye region images. Basically, it finds the center of the pupil in order to use it in our second proposed algorithm which is about 2D eye gaze tracking. First, we detect the eye regions by means of Intel OpenCV AdaBoost Haar cascade classifiers and assign the approximate size of eyeball depending on the eye region size. Secondly, using DAISMI (Deformable Angular Integral Search by Minimum Intensity) algorithm, pupil center is detected. Then, by using the percentage of black pixels over eyeball circle area, we convert the image into binary (Black and white color) for being used in the next part: DTBGE (Deformable Template based 2D Gaze Estimation) algorithm. Finally, using DTBGE algorithm, initial pupil center coordinates are assigned and DTBGE creates new pupil center coordinates and estimates the final gaze directions and eyeball size. We have performed extensive experiments and achieved very encouraging results. Finally, we discuss the effectiveness of the proposed method through several experimental results.

  • The important problem in designing a Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) is generation of fuzzy control rules and it is usually the case that they are given by human experts of the problem domain. However, it is difficult to find an well-trained expert to any given problem. In this paper, I describes an application of genetic algorithm, a well-known global search algorithm to automatic generation of fuzzy control rules for FLC design. Fuzzy rules are automatically generated by evolving initially given fuzzy rules and membership functions associated fuzzy linguistic terms. Using genetic algorithm efficient fuzzy rules can be generated without any prior knowledge about the domain problem. In addition expert knowledge can be easily incorporated into rule generation for performance enhancement. We experimented genetic algorithm with a non-trivial vehicle controling problem. Our experimental results showed that genetic algorithm is efficient for designing any complex control system and the resulting system is robust.

  • Feature selection is the important technique of selecting a subset of relevant features for building robust pattern recognition systems. Various methods have been studied for feature selection from sequential search algorithms to stochastic algorithms. In this work, we adopted a Quantum-inspired Genetic Algorithm (QGA) which is based on the concept and principles of quantum computing such as Q-bits and superposition of state for feature selection. The performance of QGA is compared to that of the Conventional Genetic Algorithm (CGA) with respect to the classification rates and the number of selected features. The experimental result using UCI data sets shows that QGA is superior to CGA.

  • In this paper, we propose a content retrieval system using pictures taken from a display for more intelligent mobile services. We focus on the search robustness by minimizing the influence of photographing conditions such as changes in the illumination intensity. For an efficient search and precise detection, as well as robustness, we use a two-step comparison method based on indexing features and a binary map based on luminance and chrominance difference with the adjacent blocks. We also evaluate the proposed algorithm by comparing with the existing algorithms, and we show the content retrieval system that we've implemented using the proposed algorithm.

  • In the content-based image search properties, form information is simple because only the contours of objects are available, and although it can effectively extract the characteristics of the objects, it is sensitive to external noise. The radial distortion, one of these noises, is most prominent in the eyewear and, due to the structural characteristics of the imaging equipment, radiative distortion occurs in almost all imaging equipment. It is very important to determine the similarity of the objects in the images in which these distortions occurred to the actual objects. In order to improve this problem, we propose a strong image search technique for formative noise and radiative distortion using regularization phase angles and moments. Through simulation using Wang DB, the proposed algorithm proved excellent performance for radiation distortion that occurs in general. In addition, a system optimized for database can be implemented by making appropriate changes to the threshold values, enabling image retrieval with the desired level of confidence in various systems. The algorithm proposed in this paper is expected to be utilized as an optimal imaging system by extracting morphological form information of multimedia data.

  • In this paper, a new method composed of discrete element method and genetic algorithm has been introduced to estimate the safety factor and search critical slip surface on slope stability analysis. In case of estimating the safety factor, conventional methods of slope analysis based on the limit equilibrium do not satisfy the overall equilibrium condition; they must make assumptions regarding the inclination and location of the interstice forces. An alternative slope analysis method based on the discrete element method, which can consider the compatibility condition between force and displacement, is presented. Real-coded genetic algorithm is applied to the search for the minimum factor of safety in proposed analysis method. This search method is shown to be more robust than simple optimization routines, which are apt to find local minimum. Examples are also shown to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method.

  • This paper is aimed at developing an optimization-based Finite Element model updating approach for structural damage identification and quantification. A modal flexibility-based error function is introduced, which uses modal assurance criterion to formulate the updating problem as an optimization problem. Because of the inexplicit input/output relationship between the candidate solutions and the error function's output, a robust and efficient optimization algorithm should be employed to evaluate the solution domain and find the global extremum with high speed and accuracy. This paper proposes a new multi-stage Selective Particle Swarm Optimization (SPSO) algorithm to solve the optimization problem. The proposed multi-stage strategy not only fixes the premature convergence of the original Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, but also increases the speed of the search stage and reduces the corresponding computational costs, without changing or adding extra terms to the algorithm's formulation. Solving the introduced objective function with the proposed multi-stage SPSO leads to a smart feedback-wise and self-adjusting damage detection method, which can effectively assess the health of the structural systems. The performance and precision of the proposed method are verified and benchmarked against the original PSO and some of its most popular variants, including SPSO, DPSO, APSO, and MSPSO. For this purpose, two numerical examples of complex civil engineering structures under different damage patterns are studied. Comparative studies are also carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed method in the presence of measurement errors. Moreover, the robustness and accuracy of the method are validated by assessing the health of a six-story shear-type building structure tested on a shake table. The obtained results introduced the proposed method as an effective and robust damage detection method even if the first few vibration modes are utilized to form the objective function.

  • Recently, due to the rapid development of multimedia technologies, as image data has been extensive and large-scaled, the problem of increasing the time needed to retrieve the desired image is gradually critical. Image retrieval system that allows users to quickly and accurately search for the desired image information has been researched for a long time. However, in the case of content-based image retrieval representative Color Histogram, Color Coherence Vectors (CCV), Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) used in sensitive to changes in brightness, rotation, there is a problem that can occur misrecognized division off the power. In this paper, in order to evaluate the video retrieval system proposed, no change in brightness, respectively 0°, 90°, 180°, 270° rotated brightness up based on the case of changing, when the brightness down the results were compared with the performance evaluation of the system is an average of about 2% to provide the difference in performance due to changes in brightness, color histogram is an average of about 12.5%, CCV is an average of about 12.25%, it appeared in the SIFT is an average of about 8.5%, Thus, the proposed system of the variation width of the smallest in average about 2%, was confirmed to be robust to changes in the brightness and rotation than the existing systems.
