  • To implement an automatic picking system (APS) in distribution center with high precision and high dynamics, this paper presents a design of a linear induction motor (LIM) drive and robust position controller based on integral variable structure control (IVSC) scheme. The force disturbance as well as the mechanical parameter variation such as the mass and friction coefficient gives a direct influence on the position control performance of APS. To guarantee a robust control performance in the presence of such uncertainty, a robust position controller is designed. A Simulink library is developed for the LIM model from the state equation. Through this model and comparative simulation based on Matlab - Simulink, it is proved that the proposed scheme has a robust control nature and is most suitable for APS.

A Study on the Robust Minimization of Warpage in Injection-Molded Part via the Optimal Design of Rib Geometry and Process Conditions (리브 형상과 공정조건의 최적설계에 의한 사출제품 휨의 안정적 최소화에 관한 연구)

  • In the study, a design methodology for robust minimization of a warpage in injection-molded part is presented. Taguchi's parameter design method is integrated with a computer simulation tool for injection molding to search for best design with robustness against the process variability by noises. The proposed methodology is based on a two-stage process: (1) reducing a warpage in the part by optimizing the part geometry including the layout and size of ribs, and (2) additionally minimizing the warpage by optimizing process conditions. An example is used to illustrate the usefulness of the design methodology.

Design of QFT controller of superconductor flywheel energy storage system for load frequency control

  • In this paper, the Superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFESS) was used for the load frequency control (LFC) of an interconnected 2 area power system. The robust SFESS controller using quantitative feedback theory (QFT) was designed to improve control performance in spite of parameter uncertainty and unexpected disturbances. An overlapping decomposition method was applied to simplify SFESS controller design for the interconnected 2 area power system. The model for simulation of the interconnected 2 area power system included the reheat steam turbine, governor, boiler dynamics and nonlinearity such as governor deadband and generation rate constraint (GRC). To verify robust performance of proposed SFESS controller, dynamic simulation was performed under various disturbances and parameters variation of power system. The results showed that the proposed SFESS controller was more robust than the conventional method.

  • An extended robust H$\infty$ filter is proposed for a nonlinear uncertain system. We also analyze the characteristics of the proposed filter such as an H$\infty$ performance criterion using the Lyapunov function method. The analysis results show that proposed filter has a robustness against disturbances such as process and measurement noises and against parameter uncertainties. Then the in-flight alignment for a strapdown inertial navigation system is designed using the presented filter. Simulation results show that the proposed filter effectively improve the performance.

  • The objective of this paper is to design a robust controller for a flexible robot arm manipulator using LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality) theory, and confirm its effectiveness through experimentation. We first describe a modeling Process of the flexible arm in order to get a mathematical model, and then discuss how to approximately obtain the uncertainty of the model for robust control. As to the control system design, we adopt the LMI-based H$_{\infty}$ synthesis algorithm which has the merits of eliminating the regularity restrictions attached to the Riccati-based methods. As a result of this, we can cope with the parameter variation (that is, modeling uncertainty) due to the tip-load variation. Finally we confirm the effectiveness of the controller through experiment and simulation.

Design of a Low-Order Sensorless Controller by Robust H∞ Control for Boost Converters

  • Luenberger observer (LO)-based sensorless multi-loop control of a converter requires an iterative trial-and-error design process, considering that many parameters should be determined, and loop gains are indirectly related to the closed-loop characteristics. Robust H∞ control adopts a compact sensorless controller. The algebraic Riccati equation (ARE)-based and linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based H∞ approaches need an exhaustive procedure, particularly for a low-order controller. Therefore, in this study, a novel robust H∞ synthesis approach is proposed to design a low-order sensorless controller for boost converters, which need not solve any ARE or LMI, and to parameterize the controller by an adjustable parameter behaving like a "knob" on the closed-loop characteristics. Simulation results show the straightforward closed-loop characteristics evaluation and better dynamic performance by the proposed H∞ approach, compared with the LO-based sensorless multi-loop control. Practical experiments on a digital processor confirmed the simulation results.

Six Sigma based on Robust Design of Gripper for LCD Transfer System (LCD 이송장치의 그립퍼부 시그마 기반 강건설계)

  • This paper presents the robust design of gripper part for a high-speed LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) transfer system. In this paper, the 1st DOE (Design of Experiment) is conducted to find out main-effect factors fur the design of gripper part. Thirty-six experiments are performed using $ANSYS^{(R)}$ and their results are statistically analyzed using $MINITAB^{(R)}$, which shows that the factors, i.e., First-width, Second-width, Rec-width, and thickness of gripper part, are more important than other factors. The main effect plots shows that the maximum deflection and mass of gripper part are minimized by increasing First-width, Second-width, Rec-width and thickness. The 2nd DOE is conducted to obtain RSM (Response Surface Method) equation. The CCD (Central Composite Design) technique with four factors is used. Optimum design is conducted using the RSM equation. Genetic algorithm is used for optimal design. Six sigma robust design is conducted to find out a guideline for control range of design parameter. To obtain six sigma level reliability, the standard deviations of design parameters are shown to be controlled within 5% of average design value.

  • The critical problem in dealing with multiple characteristics is how to compromise the conflict among the selected levels of the design parameters for each individual characteristic. In this study, First, Methodology using SN ratio optimized by univariate technique is proposed and a parameter design procedure to achieve the optimal compromise among several different response variables is developed. Second, to solve the issue on the optimal design for multiple quality characteristics, this study modelled the expected loss function with cross-product terms among the characteristics and derived range of the coefficients of the terms. The model will be used to determine the global optimal design parameters where there exists the conflict among the characteristics, which shows difference in optimal design parameters for the individual characteristics. Third, this paper propose a decision model to incorporates the values assigned by a group of experts on different factors in weighting decision of characteristic. Using this model, SN ratio of taguchi method for each of subjective factors as well as values of weights are used in this comprehensive method for weighting decision of characteristic.

  • The design of an occupant protection equipment has been considered as the important process in developing a new car since the crash performance plays an important role on the market. The cost is increased when an unexpected real test is carried out in the proto-design stage. Thus, the exact prediction of a crash performance can reduce the number of full-car test. In this research, the robust design of an airbag system considering the frontal crash is suggested to predict the more reliable responses. On the contrary, most existing researches do not consider the uncertainties. The uncertainties treated in this research are the tolerances of the vent hole, the time to fire and the length of a strap in airbag and the tolerance of the load limiter load in seat belt. The Taguchi method is utilized to determine the robust optimum of each parameter
