For an advanced intelligent service, the need of HRI technology has recently been increasing and the technology has been also improved. However, HRI components have been evaluated under stable and controlled laboratory environments and there are no evaluation results of performance in real environments. Therefore, robot service providers and users have not been getting sufficient information on the level of current HRI technology. In this paper, we provide the evaluation results of the performance of the HRI components on the robot platforms providing actual services in pilot service sites. For the evaluation, we select face detection component, speaker gender classification component and sound localization component as representative HRI components closing to the commercialization. The goal of this paper is to provide valuable information and reference performance on appling the HRI components to real robot environments.
Robot control software is a hard real-time system that must output the planned trajectory points within an explicit short time period. In this paper, we present a design and implementation method for robot control software using commercial real-time operating systems, RTKemel 4.5. Therefore, various robot motions, efficient user interface, and system failure check are easily implemented by using multitasking function, intertask communication mechanism, and real-time runtime libraries of RTKernel. The performance analysis of commercial real-time operating system for robot control is presented based on Timed Petri net(TPN) and we can use these results to design an optimal system.

The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in lower limb exoskeletons. The exoskeleton system is a human-robot cooperation system that enhances the performance of the wearer in various environments while the human operator is in charge of the position control, contextual perception, and motion signal generation through the robot's artificial intelligence. This system is in the form of a mechanical structure that is combined to the exterior of a human body to improve the muscular power of the wearer. This paper is followed by an overview of the development history of exoskeleton systems and their three main applications in military/industrial field, medical/rehabilitation field and social welfare field. Besides the key technologies in exoskeleton systems, the research is presented from several viewpoints of the exoskeleton mechanism, human-robot interface and human-robot cooperation control.

This paper presents the theoretical development of a complete navigation problem of a nonholonomic mobile robot by using ultrasonic sensors. To solve this problem, a new method to computer a fuzzy perception of the environment is presented, dealing with the uncertainties and imprecision from the sensory system and taking into account nonholonomic constranits of the robot. Fuzzy perception, fuzzy controller are applied, both in the design of each reactive behavior and solving the problem of behavior combination, to implement a fuzzy behavior-based control architecture. The performance of the proposed obstacle avoidance robot controller in order to determine the exact dynamic system modeling system that uncertainty is difficult for nomadic controlled robot direction angle by ultrasonic sensors throughout controlled performance tests. In additionally, this study is an in different ways than the self-driving simulator in the development of ultrasonci sensors and unmanned remote control techniques used by the self-driving robot controlled driving through an unmanned remote controlled unmanned realize the performance of factory antomation.

In this study, we introduce new types of planar 2 degree-of-freedom robot modules resembling the musculoskeletal structure of the human arm with actuation redundancy. First, for the given actuator sizes the performance analysis for the manipulator with redundant actuation and without redundant actuation is performed with respect to maximum load handling capacity, maximum hand velocity, and maximum hand acceleration. Secondly an algorithm which decides optimal actuator sizes for the given operational performances is introduced, and the optimal actuator sizes for a robot module with four redundant actuation are obtained. The algorithms employed in this paper will be useful to analyze the robot performances and to determine the actuator sizes for general robot manipulators.
For the evaluation of the mobile robot performance in complex environments, the experimental approach in an actual physical environment has been commonly taken. In the physical experimental approach, however, it is quite difficult to define the proper environment for the evaluation due to the lack of commonly agreed characteristics of the test environment. Particularly the number of combinations of types and physical parameters of the obstacles that the mobile robot is expected to deal with is practically unlimited. In an effort to simplify and improve the effectiveness of the evaluation process, we propose an evaluation method using decomposed environmental elements, where we evaluated the performance of the robot for a small group of simple and decomposed obstacle components, for examples projection and slope, instead of a large group of complicated random obstacles. The paper describes a set of simple obstacle models and performance parameters that we have chosen for the effective evaluation process. As an alternative to the physical experimental evaluation approach, in this paper, we used a virtual evaluation environment where the robot and the physical test environment has been modeled using a commercial multi-body dynamics analysis packaged called RecurDyn.

Mobile robots with omni-directional wheels can generate instant omni-directional motion without requiring extra space to change the direction of the body. Therefore, they are capable of moving in an arbitrary direction under any orientation even in narrow aisles or tight areas. In this research, an omni-directional mobile robot based on Mecanum wheels was developed to achieve omni-directionality. A CompactRIO embedded real-time controller and C series motion and I/O modules were employed in the control system design. Ultrasonic sensors installed on the front and lateral sides were utilized to measure the distance between the mobile robot and the side wall of a workspace. Through intensive experiments, a performance evaluation of the mobile robot was conducted to confirm its feasibility for industrial purposes. Mobility, omni-directionality, climbing capacity, and tracking performance of a squared trajectory were selected as performance indices to assess the omni-directional mobile robot.

In this paper, a motion control algorithm is developed using a fuzzy control and the optimization of performance function, which makes a robot arm avoid an unexpected obstacle when the end-effector of the robot arm is moving to the goal position. During the motion, if there exists no obstacle, the end-effecter of the robot arm moves along the pre-defined path. But if there exists an obstacle and close to the robot arm, the fuzzy motion controller is activated to adjust the path of the end-effector of the robot arm. Then, the robot arm takes the optimal posture for collision avoidance with the obstacle. To show the feasibility of the developed algorithm, numerical simulations are carried out with changing both the positions and sizes of obstacles. It was concluded that the proposed algorithm gives a good performance for obstacle avoidance.

A coordination method for a macro/micro robot with separate controllers is proposed and evaluated. The macro/micro robot system generally has independent controllers for the macro and the micro robot respectively. A controller for the coordination of the macro and the micro robot has been designed based on the stable independent controller of each system. The method and trajectory generation method is also proposed to track the moving desired position rapidly. The control method and trajectory generation method is also proposed to track the moving desired position rapidly. The control strategy has been implemented to the macro/micron robot system to evaluate the performance. The experimental results show that the proposed method for maintaining the micro robot within its workspace has uniform performance over the various range of the bandwidth and the proposed trajectory generator is shown to be efficient.

We developed a new type of human-sized BWR (biped walking robot) driven by a new actuator based on the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. Each leg of the robot is composed of three pitch joints and one roll joint. In all, a 10 degree-of-freedom robot with two balancing joints was developed. A new type of actuator for the robot is proposed, which is composed of four bar link mechanism driven by the ball screw. The robot overcomes the limit of the driving torque of conventional BWRs. The BWR was designed to walk autonomously by adapting small DC motors for the robot actuators and has a space to board DC battery and controllers. In the performance test, the BWR performed sitting-up and down motion, and walking motion. Through the test, we found the possibility of a high performance biped-walking.
