By development of a robot technology, personal robot is being developed very actively. Various infra-technologies are accumulated in hardware and software how by internal a lot of research and development efforts, and it is circumstance that actual commodity is announced. But, personal robot is applied to be acting near human, and takes charge of safety and connected directly a lot of works of home security, gas-leakage, fire-warning facilities, or/and etc. So personal robot must do safe and stable action even if any unexpected accidents are happened, important functions are always operated. In this paper, we are wished to show design structures for supporting fault-tolerant operation from our real-time robot middleware viewpoint. Personal robot, in being developed, was designed by module structure to do to interconnect and to interoperate among each module that is mutually implemented by each research facilities or company. Also, each modules can use appreciate network system that is fit for handling and communicating its data. To guarantee this, we have being developed a real-time network middleware, for especially personal robot. Recent our working is to add and to adjust some functions like connection management, distributed routing mechanism, remote object management, and making platform independent robot application execution environment with self-moving of robot application, for fault-tolerant personal robot.

In a park or street, we can see many people jogging or walking with their dogs tracking their masters. In this study, an entertainment robot that imitates a dog's behavior is created. The robot's task is tracking a moving target that is recognized as the master. In order to design the robot, the ecological approach. in which the robot's goals and surroundings heavily influence its design, is used. A three-wheel type locomotion system is designed as the robot's physical structure which can follow a human jogging in outdoor space like a park. A sensor system which can detect the position of a master for the robot in the outdoor space, is developed. This sensor system consists of a signal transmitter which is at the hand of a master and some sensors which are mounted on the robot. The transmitter emits RF(radio frequency) and ultrasonic signals and the sensors detect the direction and distance from the robot to the transmitter by using the received signals. For the control architecture of the robot, a purely reactive behavior-based method is used in order to increase speed of response. The developed robot is evaluated through experiments conducted in indoor and outdoor environments.

The modular robots are a kind of system that was developed to overcome the limitation of the movement for the mobile robot with wheels or legs. In legs type mobile robot case, they are limited for velocity and balance during moving at the uneven terrain. In wheeled mobile robot case, they are also limited to overcome dump, stair and so on. The modular robots can overcome moving limitation because of their transforming ability. However, they are researched not only driving mechanism but also combination mechanism. In this paper we proposed four kinds of unique structure for the combination and separation and also its algorithm. The effectiveness of the structure is verified with building the real structure and taking experiments to the designed modular robot
We propose a variable frame structure connected with telescopic mast-shaped shaft for a robot displaying outstanding ability to cross obstacles, and for effective traction control. The wireless control system was built to extend and contract a deployable mechanism, which is shaped into a hoberman sphere assembled with frame structures. In order to develop important parameters for efficient locomotion, we derived an Euler-Lagrange equation for the spherical robot. According to the equation, the DC motor was selected. A prototype mechanism was tested and a Finite-Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted in parallel. Using these data, we constructed a deployable spherical robot with structural stability. The deployable robot moved at a speed of 0.85 m/s from 520 mm to 650 mm.
This paper deals with a manipulability analysis of multi-legged walking robots in acceleration domain, that is the dynamic manipulability analysis of walking robot. Noting that the kinematic structure of the walking robot is basically the same with that of the multiple serial robot system holding one object, the analysis method for cooperating robot is converted to that of walking robot. With the proposed method, the bound of achievable acceleration of the moving body is easily derived from the given bounds on the capabilities of Joint torques. Several walking robot examples are analyzed with proposed method under the assumption of hard contact, and presented in the paper to validate the method.
A motion pattern generation is a process of calculating a certain stable motion trajectory for stably operating a certain motion. A motion control is to make a posture of a robot stable by eliminating occurring disturbances while a robot is in operation using a pre-generated motion pattern. In this paper, a general method of motion pattern generation for a biped walking robot using universal approximator, learning neural networks, is proposed. Existing techniques are numerical methods using recursive computation and approximating methods which generate an approximation of a motion pattern by simplifying a robot's upper body structure. In near future other approaches for the motion pattern generations will be applied and compared as to be done.

This paper deals with the implementation of a quadruped working robot using wireless sensor network with TinyOS. It is often required to install real time OS and wireless network in the mobile robot field since robots work alone without human intervention and also exchanging their information between robot systems. The suggested controller utilizes a built-in wireless network OS and makes the variance action related with human-kindly motions for a quadruped walking robot. In addition, a kinematics analysis of its structure and control architecture of robot system is suggested and verified the usefulness through the real experiment.

To overcome the weakness in the load capacity of conventional robot manipulators actuated by motors with the speed reducer such as the harmonic driver, we proposed a new closed-chain type of the robot actuator which is composed of the four-bar-link mechanism driven by the ball screw. The robot manipulator is revolute-jointed and composed of four axes. The base axis is actuated by the lineal actuator such as the ball screw, and the others are actuated by the proposed actuator. We analyzed the mechanism of the actuators of the robot joints, and developed the dynamics model. The dynamics are expressed in the joint coordinates and then they are mapped into the sliding coordinates of the ball screw. We performed fundamental tests on the structure of the robot.
This paper represents a control method of improving the performance of direct drive robot. The direct transfer of torque and rotational speed of direct drive motor to the robot body without reduction gear makes the robot speed fast. However, the variation of inertia matrix and low friction cause the control difficult, and one more effort must be in the reducing the acceleration and deceleration time to reduce the cycle time. To fasten the cycle time and to improve the robustness of robot, one control method is developed, and implemented in the Goldstar DD robot. This method does not need to change the conventional PI type control structure, but one additional compensational control law is required. The control law can be obtained via inverse dynamic model of robot, and inverse model of existing control loop. The effects of this control law are shown in this paper.
In this paper, we introduce an internal pipeline exploration of an in-pipe robot, based on the landmark recognition system. The fittings of pipelines such as elbows and branches are used as the landmarks. The robot recognizes the landmarks with a vision system by using the shadows of the elements, which are generated by the specially designed illuminator on the robot. By using a simple image-processing, the robot can easily detect and distinguish these landmarks while recognizing the direction of the pipeline path. Simultaneously, all information for exploration is continuously recorded and used to reconstruct the map of the pipelines. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by real experiments using the in-pipe robot MRINSPECT V for moving inside of the miniature urban 8-inch gas pipeline structure.
