In this paper, a path navigation algorithm through use of a sensor platform is proposed. The sensor platform is composed of two electric motors which make panning and tilting motions. An algorithm for computing a real path and an obstacle length is developed by using a scanning method that controls rotation of the sensors on the platform. An Autonomous Robot Vehicle(ARV) can perceive the given path by adapting this algorithm. A sensor scanning method is applied to the sensor platform for using small numbers of sensor. The path navigation algorithm is composed of two parts. One is to perceive a path pattern, the other is used to avoid an obstacle. An optimal controller is designed for tracking the reference path which is generated by perceiving the path pattern. The ARV is operated using the optimal controller and the path navigation algorithm. Based on the results of actual experiments, this algorithm for an ARV proved sufficient for path navigation by small number of sensors and for a low cost controller by using the sensor platform with a scanning method.
In this paper, we introduce an autonomous calibration method for a 2D laser displacement sensor (e.g. laser vision sensor and laser range finder) by matching a single point on a flat structure. Many arc welding robots install a 2D laser displacement sensor to expand their application by recognizing their environment (e.g. base metal and seam). In such systems, sensing data should be transformed to the robot's coordinates, and the geometric relation (i.e. rotation and translation) between the robot's coordinates and sensor coordinates should be known for the transformation. Calibration means the inference process of geometric relation between the sensor and robot. Generally, the matching of more than 3 points is required to infer the geometric relation. However, we introduce a novel method to calibrate using only 1 point matching and use a specific flat structure (i.e. circular hole) which enables us to find the geometric relation with a single point matching. We make the rotation component of the calibration results as a constant to use only a single point by moving a robot to a specific pose. The flat structure can be installed easily in a manufacturing site, because the structure does not have a volume (i.e. almost 2D structure). The calibration process is fully autonomous and does not need any manual operation. A robot which installed the sensor moves to the specific pose by sensing features of the circular hole such as length of chord and center position of the chord. We show the precision of the proposed method by performing repetitive experiments in various situations. Furthermore, we applied the result of the proposed method to sensor based seam tracking with a robot, and report the difference of the robot's TCP (Tool Center Point) trajectory. This experiment shows that the proposed method ensures precision.

In this paper, we propose a multisensor-based navigation algorithm for a mobile robot, which is intelligently searching the goal location in unknown dynamic environments using multi-ultrasonic sensor. Instead of using “sensor fusion” method which generates the trajectory of a robot based upon the environment model and sensory data, “command fusion” method by fuzzy inference is used to govern the robot motions. The major factors for robot navigation are represented as a cost function. Using the data of the robot states and the environment, the weight value of each factor using fuzzy inference is determined for an optimal trajectory in dynamic environments. For the evaluation of the proposed algorithm, we performed simulations in PC as well as experiments with IRL-2002. The results show that the proposed algorithm is apt to identify obstacles in unknown environments to guide the robot to the goal location safely.
This paper presents an efficient localization scheme for an indoor mobile robot using RFID tags on the floor. The mobile robot carries an RFID reader at the bottom, which reads the RFID tags on the floor to localize the mobile robot. Each RFID tar on the floor stores its own absolute position which is used to calculate the position and velocity of the mobile robot. Locating the RFID tags on the floor, which constructs an intelligent sensor space, may require several factors to be considered: economics feasibility and accuracy. In this paper, the optimal allocation scheme of the RFID tags on the floor to satisfy the accuracy constraint has been proposed and verified by the experiments. Based on the RFID reading, the mobile robot navigation has been successfully demonstrated to avoid obstacles and to reach the goal within a pre-specified time.
This paper represents an absolute positioning system using a light navigation path for mobile robot. The absolute positioning system is composed of the projector unit which generates a laser beam using laser diode and mobile robot with the optical detector which has some optical sensors. The projector unit is fixed over the navigating plane of mobile robot to generate the light navigation path, and the optical detector located upper part of mobile robot detects the generated laser beam from the projector. The navigation of mobile robot is controlled by the micro-processor which compares the detected present position from the detector with the previously programmed navigation path. And experimental results show that our sensor system can be used for the absolute positioning system of the mobile robot.
The research on the avoidance of the large-obstacles such as a wall, a large box, etc. using ultrasonic sensors has been generally progressed up to now. But the mobile robot could meet a small-obstacle such as a small plastic bottle, a small sphere, and so on in its designated path, and could be disturbed by them in the locomotion of the mobile robot. So, it is necessary to research on the avoidance of a small-obstacle. In this paper, a robot's small-obstacle perceiving system was designed and fabricated by arranging four ultrasonic sensors on the plastic plate to avoid small-obstacles. The system was installed on the upper part of the mobile robot with the slope angles between $40.7^{\circ}$ and $23.3^{\circ}$ to a horizontal line and the dynamic characteristic test of the robot was performed. As the result, it was confirmed that the mobile robot with the system could avoid small-obstacles in indoor environment safely.

In this paper, a robot automation methodology for chemical drum assembly in semiconductor industries are presented. Robot automation is essential to resolve safety issues in which operators are directly or indirectly exposed to chemicals or fumes in assembling dispense heads on chemical drums. However, the chemical drum assembling process involves complex and difficult tasks, such as mating male/female keycodes and fastening screws with large-diameter, which may be very difficult to be performed by a single-arm robot with a commercial rigid F/T sensor. In order to solve the problems, a method for assembling a chemical drum using dual-arm collaborative robot system, compliance F/T sensor, robot vision and gripper is presented.
In this paper, position control of a car-like mobile robot using a neural network is presented. positional information of the mobile robot is given by a laser range finder located remotely through wireless communication. The heading angle is measured by a gyro sensor. Considering these two sensor information as a reference, the robot posture is corrected by a cascaded controller. To improve the tracking performance, a neural network with a cascaded controller is used to compensate for any uncertainty in the robot. The neural network functions as a compensator to minimize the positional errors in on-line fashion. A car-like mobile robot is built as a test-bed and experimental studies of several controllers are conducted and compared. Experimental results show that the best position control performance can be achieved by a cascaded controller with a neural network.
